08:10, 80F, partly cloudy. that big gray rat snake was still in the rafters this morning so I knocked it down and hooked it with the grass sling and dropped it into a box. it was at least 6 ft. long and fat from all the eggs it had eaten.. I put the box in the back of the pickup, thinking I would relocate that snake down the road, but just when I got to 345, I look in the rearview mirror and see that snake poke its head out of the box and slither into the truck bed. I pulled over and that snake was gone. wondering if they "home."

rain showers all around us all morning. tapered off in the afternoon. we never got rained on although at one point we were surrounded by 7 separate rain events. sunny and hot. did 10 five minute trawls offshore of steinhatchee out in the sea grass beds. netted half a dozen young-of-the-year gag grouper, hogfish, lane and gray snapper. caught a lot of black sea bass, plus 5 big gulf flounder (Par. albigutta) in one trawl. the scallops were few and far between. looks like they've been pretty much cleaned out. the bait fish catch- pigfish, pin fish, moharra, and file fish was sizable. as usual, we identified by scientific name, measured, and counted everything and most went back into the water. some of the YOY fish were taken back for mercury, gut analysis, and life history studies. a lot of writing involved.
usually sea birds are scarce but today we passed a raft of cormorants in the river, were visited by laughing and ring-billed gulls looking for a fast meal, and were passed by a flock of brown pelicans. a nice change from the usual bare sea and sky-scapes that offshore trawls offer.

I slashed my finger on an oyster and bled all over the boat. one of the crew helped me stop the bleeding with gauze pads while another of the crew washed down the boat. a lot of spray on our way back going into the wind and the chop.
