Llama Weather Ponderings

I really need to be better about posting here...

It has been a very mild winter in east central Iowa. Minimal snowfall and above average (and above freezing) temperatures have made the heating fuel bills low and the farm chores easier to do.

I want to apologize for my weather station going offline each night. Apparently I have a bad transmitter card on my Vantage Pro 2 that sucks batteries dry in 48 hours. I need to send it in for replacement.

Let's hope Mother Nature has no big surprises left in store for us for the next 5 weeks. It has been a very nice winter.

Well, aside from the 1 - 3" of snow we have predicted for this weekend, I must say it looks like spring is here to stay for 2010. A week plus of remaining above freezing, even at night, has really taken its toll on the snow cover on the farm. One large pile remains from the plow and drift combination in the back yard. The llamas are finally out of the barn and perusing the pasture for anything green, our first cria (baby llama) of the spring has arrived and mud pre...

Well, it looks like it is that time of year where the meteorologists of the northern plains are practicing their freshman psychology on us. Each week I look at the extended forecasts and they always seem to forecast highs in the 40s at about 10 – 12 days out. Then, low and behold, by the time those dates start coming into focus on the 5 day forecast, those 40s have dropped to mid-30s. And then, by the time the date in question finally arrives, we struggle to ev...

Well, it warmed up above 0 just long enough to dump another 8" of light, dry and fluffy snow on us overnight. The wind has now picked up to a steady 20 - 25 MPH with higher gusts from the NNW which should make quick work of drifting our road shut.I guess I should have researched weather patterns more fully before settling in this area of Iowa. Even though we are a full 150 miles farther south of where I grew up (Sioux Falls, SD), we happen to be at the end of the...

Looks like the first day of winter has another 2-3 inches of snow to add to the 2.5 we received yesterday. They are predicting another round of mixed mess this week with our customary 30 - 50 mph winds. Joy to the World indeed!
