It's Truly Spring

Even though it is still a little cold, and the ice is not completely melted quite yet on some lakes, Spring storms drag me out of hibernation to blog-- Yet again ;)

While storms are popping in IL and we'll all be watching Spring severe across the country, I'd mainly like to point out how damned lucky we are up here by the Chain of Lakes that the melt off was extremely gradual, without major flooding! Wow! After the record amount of snow and cold (with potential for ice jamming) we wipe our brow and say PHEW! 'At coulda been BAAADDD. Let's hope we 'skate' through Spring and Summer severe just as lucky!

With 4 feet of ice still gracing the lakes up in the UP, Minnesota, ND etc, we have had a lot of migratory birds hanging out in our neck of the woods. I did a photo series a couple of weekends ago which featured some North American White Pelicans, and other birds finding refuge here on the chain. Hope you enjoy and go into the series of other pics with this one. You can find them all in the WUphoto section.

Thanks for everyone's well wishes and prayers for my family. I'll do an update on a calm day, when I feel more like talking about the events of this long, hard winter. Lots of twists and turns, but 'the yewts' are all doing great, and I'm so very proud of them all.

Stay safe all ships! Chicagoland...PAY ATTENTION, those November severe storms were just in our backyard !!!
P.S. Fermi Lab is this weekend. I may try to go again, lol. One of the keynote speakers is highlighting the November outbreak.
Peace---out.

Hello! well late night here and dau is in the mix there in OKC (the village) she'll be fine...but I am really getting nervous about this weekend for all out S.W. Will get into severe mode once I can...makes me really want to prepare for our own and I have a lot to do (but at least I'm thinking about it).

Anyhoo, had the landscape architect here today. That was fun! He just loved the property and did come up with a good plan he will put onto paper and we can begin to gain control (somewhat) of the jungle, lol! Poor guy had to deal with me with all my grandiose ideas, lol, but that's why I pay him and not nag my husband, lol!

Here's a slideshow of what Mr. Landscaper got to deal with today...his head is spinning! haha enjoy...I completely know I'll get absolutely not one of these ideas accomplished, but will get somewhat of a collection which fits the puzzle, and that is fine with me. It all begins with dreams :)
Stay safe all ships at sea or in port, or wherever you may be...

Add: I am laughing so hard at how many pics I posted, lololol!!! I've been collecting these for like 2 years, haha! Ohhhh...dream on! Not exactly sure how this will all come together, but I can assure you some of these ideas will blend into others, somehow and that's the beauty of it.

A few pics of today's activity to prepare for the April frost. I can't find my planting diagram, so not sure what things are atm...lol...oh well Veggie Garden surprise, I guess, lol! Hopefully at this point in my life, I'll be able to identify the plantings by their leaves... I planted radishes though, so I'll have to really figure that one out for thinning before they croud each other in the ground.

Also, I'm very excited about a deal I have for a landscape firm to come tomorrow to give us a design on the jungle :) They of course want the work, but they'll design, give a site plan, material list, and we can decide if we want to hire them to do some, or we do some...
So we'll see what they come up with for ideas. We'd really like to get the jungle at least less time consuming and manageable so we can do more boating, and mow and go. Even a garden isn't something I HAVE to do every year if we plan other vacations and such...Dreaming big after Winter, lol!

Night all Owls! Whooot Whooot pay attention to that nasty siteeation shaping up in OKC area, and beyond. Yikes, prayers up for a change in the weekend forecast for them!

I remember it BF! I can tell you exactly where I was, and I saw it happen. I was 3 1/2 years old when I saw that tornado :) And, I remember the snowstorm, earlier, too. And, actually a year later, I remember an earthquake...In Chicago!!! It was 1969 and it was actually a New Madrid 5.4 which shook us, here, too. Wow. Guess that would be those formative years where I just started to really pay attention to things.

Hi MN...Yup, everyone here is sneezing, or sore throats actually...it's been quite a time for the hand sanitizer lately. Bugs came out today...in force, ewe. Frogs came out a couple of weeks ago, then kind of went quiet, but then now they are deafening in the wetland areas like Lakemoor and around the channels of the Chain. It's humid, damp a bit chilly, but we can use the rain. You're right, it feels dry sometimes, and I can't tell if it's gonna rain til June, or dry up and knock us out with drought? Can we get a vote for middle of the road, there hey? LOL

So, the heat has been off for two days (that's late for us) and I went down to the basement to do laundry...Oh My is it COLD down there...the first level is 72 degrees, but the basement is still like probably 56 now without heat. The ground was so dang frozen! Woah! Noah!!! lol Ok I go now from here too... Stay safe all ships at sea, or in port or wherever you may be...Prayers up for those killed in that horrible Ferry Accident in S. Korea. What a tragedy. Just awful. And, thanks up for the safety of the Boston Marathon today, and remember those who were injured and lost so senselessly last year. Run on...run on....And Prayers for the mudslide victims...and just all inclusive tonight -- You have our thoughts and prayers.

After the rain came through this morning, the temperature rose to a gorgeous 68F and the dew point started to drop down to the current 38F which feels really comfortable, but with the air getting dryer, we see an increase of fires and allergies. So we are ether freezing or burning and sneezing. That's Spring for you. So far we have not had any flooding problem over most of Minnesota, with the exception of NW Minnesota along the Red River of the North. I'm really enjoying this Spring weather today, but my wife and son are sneezing their head off.

Sounds like you had a wonderful easter,Jus.
We here in the northern hemisphere deserve it.
We also had good weather in the Northeast, but a little cool, stayed in the 50's,but a great day with the family.
We got through the Marathon today happy and sad at the same time.\
So appropriate to have an American win it this year, the first time since 1983 for the men.

Hello, thank you Thoughtsteader, Skye, GG, MN, BF, Sandi, Pros, and NEw. Hope you all had a wonderful Easter yesterday. Ours was just a gorgeous day here. Probably one of the nicest Easter Days we've ever had in Chicago. Church was just so lovely with the birds singing when we had quiet prayer... children from Sunday school laughing outside finding their hidden eggs. Some of the kids played little instruments with the choir as they sang, 'The Angels Rolled the Stone Away'...
Then a big family meal here.
I have to say I'm exhausted though and my feet are really bad. Physical Therapy will have to erase some of the damage. I should have never been on my feet that much Friday/Saturday and yesterday.

So in weather news, I just cleared the deck for the rain headed in. Regular T-storms may pop up here and there, but not expecting anything too severe. It's warm and calm :) I'll take that any day in Spring!

Tom Skilling had a wonderful post about the 1967 horrible tornado outbreak 47 years ago today. Very much worth a look if you track storms and tornadoes. I can't seem to link it, so I'm going to copy and paste what he wrote and I hope that's okay...

Tom Skilling..."Good Monday all! We mark a tragic meteorological anniversary today--the 47th anniversary of this area's worst tornado outbreak ever to strike the greater Chicago area. Belvidere and Oak Lawn were among the areas most devasted by the storms--but Lake Zurich was among the areas hit. At least ten twisters dipped from Illinois skies--three of them powerful F-4 twisters. The deadly swarm of tornadoes left 58 dead and more than 1,000 injured. Damage reached nearly a half-billion 2006 dollars.
1967 generated some of this area's most noteworthy severe weather events. The April 21 tornado outbreak came just under 3 months after the infamous Blizzard of 1967, which occurred Jan 26-27 and to this day remains Chicago's biggest snowstorm. In the wake of that storm, the ground here remained snow covered for 42 consecutive days--from Jan 26-March 9.
The photo posted here was discovered in an attic years later and was taken by Ron Bacon from a parking lot at Street & Cicero Avenue. It was published in the Oak Lawn Patch.
The tornado which struck Belividere threw a school bus full of young school children across a corn field killing a number of these young people.
I'm posting the Daily Weather Map 7am the morning of April 21, 1967 along with the 500 mb. map which offers insight into the orientation of the jet stream that day--always a critical variable in producing the supercellular t-stoms which spawn tornadoes.
The National Weather Service-Chicago office has posted a series of shots of the the twister's aftermath. Searchers were forced to search through a cover of several inches of snow which fell only days after the tornado outbreak in Oak Lawn. "

Strong Earthquake Shakes Mexican Capital
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

ACAPULCO, Mexico β€” A powerful, magnitude-7.5 earthquake shook central and southern Mexico on Friday. The U.S. Geological Survey said it was centered northwest of the Pacific resort of Acapulco, where many Mexicans are vacationing for the Easter holiday.

The quake was felt strongly in the resort city, as well as in Mexico's capital, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

"There is a crisis of panic," said Alicia Dominguez, who answered the phone at the civil protection office. "It's mainly the tourists who are shaken." Civil protection officials were patrolling the city to check for damage and casualties.....

Hi, BC thank you. But here I feel it's my blog so here I am free to say what I wish without treading on them. I'm not interested in them coming here, so I won't go there to knock their blogs or decisions. They can phase us out if they like, or shut me up or whatever they like with their business decisions. It will be my consumer decision when my membership is up, and my decision to begin to seek other forums (like they'll give two curds) I actually haven't explored what may be new in the context of weather sites lately, so this is all good.

I like Facebook and Twitter too and find a lot of interesting weather related reading there. Actually, more so now with no time to spare. I like them probably as much as I used to like it on the WU. So, I'll be here of course when I have time, unless we just get our blogs cancelled. But, I love the photos and it would be a shame and really hurt if they eliminate that. So I'll be on FB and twitter and nws, spc, usgs.gov or just wgn weather, locally, which is also extremely rich in content and science and less time consuming for me right now.

Anyhoo ramble ramble... Please join FB or twitter to keep in touch if they discontinue our blogs :) and I do hope to see you all here until the time they do.

Jus,
That is a great comment. It's an example of what is so wonderful about WU. Our cities and areas where we all live under constant attack from Mother Nature and from humans,so I find it comforting to come and see how those we know and even those who we don't know are doing in times of crisis. We all seem to care about each other, and that's a nice trait to have. My city in Boston has had a tough year, and I am so proud of the resiliency its survivors have shown, but Boston isn't the only city which has suffered. So we reach out to who ever is in danger or who has suffered a loss, or is ill and provide a little comfort. We all hope that the coming year will be without disasters, but we all know that there will be events.
I've met a lot of dear friends here that I will always remember.
On that subject has anyone seen or heard from Mass. I miss my Massachusetts neighbor.

Tonight I received word that a beloved Chicagoland Skywarn fellow had passed away. I felt sad, and was thankful the Chicagoland Skywarn Community was honoring and acknowledging our fellow member's contributions, his life and passing. Our prayers go out to his family tonight.

This made me think of how the 'weather community' really functions and becomes so valuable: They are real.

Dear Current WU Almighty -- Your data, your colorful logos, your planted shills touting the 'greatness' of your new blog will never, never replace the humans who (way before my time) created the Weather Underground community. They communicated such as what I described above--as a thoughtful community-- and built the trust of the real WU -- they stayed up all night and made sure they 'had your back' in an emergency. They posted conversational, relevant, up to the minute science-- complete with human eccentricity, bias, some fraud, lots of humor, but none-the-less human words --- not bean-counter hit D A T A.

You'll always find humans gravitate their curiosity towards a glimpse inside other's human condition, and it is with that great uniqueness WU MEMBERS grabbed audience, not fancy bells and whistles. If I heard a member's town mentioned in a news report, I instantly came to WU to see if they were okay. If the SPC had a target on my friends backs, I watched through the night...... ;--( Hell, some nights I stayed up all night crying for people half way around the world affected by the weather or a natural disaster just because our community empathized with their horrible plight, their disaster their suffering.

WU Almighty, you are no deity. We on the web are all only human AND THAT WAS YOUR STRENGTH --WU Almighty -- Your growth was in human curiosity, science regarding natural disasters and real life photographic visual relativity. Your bells and whistles and speedy load on mobile will be replaced by a site with the veracity of heart WU had before your bean counters came along, in my opinion.
We'll stay together, us bloggers, and WU photographers, even when you bean counters abandon the very people who gave you your jobs. Uh DUHHHH... way to miss the forest for the trees, tree huggers, smh.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to take the time to set this up to just log right into classic. I haven't had time to figure that out yet. Just really busy with work.

I'd seriously like to just take off for a vacation and forget about this whole winter now...seriously...not joking. It was so cold today still. Wind chill was still about 30, even though it tried to get up to 38 with sun in and out.

I didn't stay up long enough to get the eclipse, but I did take a few moon pics.

If I get a chance, I'll go through my pics from last night and try to get them up today or tomorrow. I have one video, too with eerie clouds floating in front.

Stay well all ships!

Hi Ylee, Sandi, BF
Ylee and Sandi, there are photos in the photo section of the snow today :)

I walked out of Physical Therapy (for my feet) and the snow was whipping into my face as just insult screaming,

"ha ha ha ha ha ha!!! April Fooled You!" lol

Anyway, really sad the photos I took and uploaded to WU don't appear next to my blog anymore. This is really upsetting to me and was sort of even my own record of following the weather, seasons, and my life as an accent to my blog. Those pictures were integral to my stories. If someone knows how to get them back on the side, please let me know. Thank you. :(

Yeh, I'm not happy either, lost all my Belle pics on the side also.
I see a lot of people logging back into the classic WU.

Lunar eclipse should be visible here :) We have clear skies at the moment. It should be approx. 2:06 pm and then 78 minutes of the 'blood red' color (reflective of earth's surface).

Not sure if I'll make it that long. I'll post a photo soon before I go to bed though of whatever there may be of it to see.

Good luck WUmoonphotopeeps. I'm certain there will be some awesome images tomorrow!

still cloudy here .. was going to see and try to get some photos .. but inch or more of Snow on the ground and temp down to below freezing .. think I will look at other's pictures and stay in the warm house !!
