Hi all! So, less than two weeks until our California Trip!
And of course I'm California Dreamin!
For me, I pretty much have to 'endure' the meetings and conference and biz...for a few days, and THEN--
THEN--
Dream Trippin Cali!

Plan is to take a fast car up to Sequoia National Park after business meetings in Anaheim. (I don't want to go to Disney. I want to see the Sequoias :)
We'll stay in a rustic lodge in the park...and visit the Giant Sequoia Monument area.

Tree House by MojaveDesertRat

Can I just fall over here! What an amazing photo! Just can't believe this will be a dream for me come true cause this girl from the Mid-west just didn't get too many places quite yet. If just to touch the bark and feel that earthy root. Wow.

Then after the Sequoia NP, we trickle over heading ever toward the water (you know me!) Westward, to Cambria by the sea :)
oh-- in between-- Hubby has a few vineyard stops :) well planned.
We slide down the pacific coast, along the highway 1 and 101? I guess in the brief time we have, we will see so much along the way. Just in time to make it back to LA to dance into the wee hours before taking back off to reality.

Simply-- Carpe Diem Cali! (We don't have many days, but we will take them to the limit!)

So, help me play some Traveling Tunes and please post your favorite pictures captured for this California Dreaming blog!
C'mon, you know the ones!
Play some of the forgotten fun California tunes or your memory song from Cali.
You know I love it when you do that!

Wow, and it was going sooo well on the main. Actually could read up until now and it was fairly educating, civil all day. Then it just went to pot! Must be people getting a little tired and crabby.

Update on Mom: She is still here in Illinois and not in Delray Beach, (Palm Beach County/SE Coast of FL) I am so glad about that. Worried for all our other friends though. Gams, Ogal, Finn, etc...
Plus, my elderly Aunt in Coral Gables. But she's lived there since 1956 so she doesn't worry, just me. lol

So, Isaac is quite interesting. You know I've watched hurricane history for a long time, since I was a kid, but not formally or scientifically or as long as most of you.
So, generally I don't comment on Hurricanes much because I don't know enough. However, I don't like Isaac's size. He's so big and even if he stays a TS, he's just going to cause trouble for Haiti and many, many other areas with rain and flooding.
Don't like his size. Watching how that core comes together, too, tonight. Fascinating. Just fascinating and really quite beautiful.

Anyone know how the Ships model is on intensity as far as accuracy percentage? Ships has it pretty strong.
But it will do what it will do. Why does it remind me of Debby? Ok I digress...
I have it a bit west of the track now, but that's seriously a guess. Still FL though and a TS. Just my hunch. hey, least I buried the hunch in a bunch o rambling text...no science and I know it....just hunch.

Update on Dau's arm: It was a sprained elbow. 19mph yank off the boat did NOT re-break the humorous! Yay. Doctor took the first x-ray of the humorous since last year's complete snap. It healed so nicely! A little bit ugly cosmetically, but gorgeous to an orthopedic! textbook. Heard more stories about Mad city hospital interns being involved in the setting of that bone. They were paraded in. Dau was a textbook intern study for a snapped humerous (sp? W/e). So, yesterday when she got hurt, she almost passed out in the water cause she freaked and thought she snapped the bone again. She held it together so she wouldn't drown and re-assessed while the boat turned around. Her boyfriend got in the water and treaded water to lift her straight up onto the boat. (whata guy!) She really had to hold it together to assess the damage. I work right across the street from the lake so, I went. Picked her up and we were off to the doc within an hour. A doctor visit is good. Usually it's an ambulance ride or ER for dau. Anyway, she did good. She's been working out all summer. Running 3 to 5 miles a day. Working abs. Working the arms for strength to do the tricks on the wake board. It paid off to help that arm be strong. She'll do physical therapy to heal the sprain in the elbow. They ARE treating it as a serious injury. But you can tell the mood is upbeat and not critical. Yay.

Ok ramble scramble...and now back to Isaac lurking. Night all ships and be safe my peeps on the bays!

Gotta play footloose because Isaac is basically footloose tonight. Peace out!

Well, it was a very, very long day involving WG. And, her humerous. She wrecked it again Wake boarding...
I am thinking it is muscular, and not the bone this time. Long story. But it involves falling at 19 mph and her arm falling through the tow rope and being dragged...until it BROKE! The rope I mean! Uhm that's like unheard of! everyone's nightmare to get caught in the rope. Well the little thing broke and she was saved.

Well, I hope it works out ok. But, we ended up having just the best day together in spite of the injury. And, it was a day I'll cherish w/ my kids forever. Her brother came to her rescue and so did I. W just all hung out making sure she was ok and tomorrow we have to do the caT scans, etc...We are...what we are. We live with a dare devil! I have since she was born.

Need to really catch up on Isaac. Basically, my schedule has now made me on vacation. I can catch up on storms and watch during the day until I get to the Sequoias about a week or so from now.

Night all ships at sea or in port or where ever you may be. Stay safe. Trains are going to bed and so am I. :) Stay away Isaac. Stay away train...

Oh I didn't know about Scott McKenzie, as a girl I loved this song and got such a kick when we got to SF a couple of years ago! Like when we went to Liverpool first time I had to go over the Mersey river on the ferry because of Gerry and the Pacemakers hit Ferry cross the Mersey, Sandi will remember that one I'm
sure!!!
Sorry to hear you have had some health issues but it sounds as if you are getting to grips with it, yes thank you my flu is going!
Lost again at the dog show, beaten by my major opposition, don't mind losing to a better dog but when everybody outside the ring says "you were robbed" its a little frustrating. My girl got beaten by my friends pup but as I bred her father I am not dissappointed with that thats why we breed to improve!
I understand the cleaning thing even if we are leaving in the middle of the night everything has to be clean and in its place ready for when we come back.
In case I don't get back to the blog, safe journey and I hope you have a fabulous trip!

Wow Oz,that's awful about that car!
How do you feel? Did you go to the show?

Thank you for your note about the puppy mill/puppy farm problem world wide. Yes, our breeders who are breeding responsibly meet strict guidelines for their breeding organization AND their county and local municipal governments.
Compliance is not a problem, unless one IS the business of puppy mill. Sometimes, I believe there are people who are just ignorant and really do just get caught up in the money. There can be money, but over many years and years for a legitimate breeder, it comes to about 5 cents a pup! LOL
Unfortunately, the puppy mill people don't test for so many of the traits which we watch for (and test for) generation after generation.
I am soooo cautious and just beginning to investigate the lineage for Boomer. Even though he came from a legitimate breeder. Still skeptical.

I have seen so many people get broken hearts from expensive pet store dogs with bad hearts, brain problems, siezures. Oh my :(
Do you have easy access to DNA? OFA etc... there? It is getting so much easier these days for us here to do the right thing or just buy w/o the breeding rights.

Sandi, glad your organizations have done well at getting the puppy business safe in the UK. Here, out in the countryside, unfortunately so many bad breeding operations can go undetected.

Hubby and I don't leave until Saturday. So, we did a little fishing last Saturday and errands. Then yesterday we had to clean the whole house. I usually do this before we go on a vacation (it's a weird habit) but hubby helped me. I'll probably get a new vacuum out of it ha haha (he surely found it to be a pain to run like I do) and possibly a new water softener after he scrubbed lime deposit from our shower for a looong time! lol!!
(giggle)

On another note. I have had tests for over a month, mri, e-ray, blood, cat-scans, scans we shall not mention. It has been determined my horrible attacks of back pain are ---
Diverticulitis (attack) but Diverticulosis condition and Spastic (yeah, you know--IBS) Ok righty o!

Would also like to mention-- now that this has been discovered, my life is forever changed and food is now THE ENEMY! It really does s&%k.

Farewell hot dogs, pizza, gyros with cucumber sauce...oh the list goes on and on. I basically can have broth. (j/k I'm learning. And, actually with this low residue, bland diet lately/no lactose...it is going rather well. I am very, very scared of the pain, so I behave)
Ramble off! Done w/the health crud. Off to California armed with the knowledge food will not destroy my trip with pain. Thank goodness.

Songs later (city counsel widow tonight could you tell?) May try to look up the Kernville CA fires :( and also find a good shot of those water spouts.

Ta ta!

Hi Jus, hope the car wasn't damaged and you didn't get too wet! Lake Michigan made our news yesterday with water spouts.
We went on holiday to the UK and Hubby left car in secure parking (company car) we had heard about Sydney being battered by a hail storm on the news in the UK, we arrived home about 11pm dark and raining and the attendant brought the car to the door and it looked like someone had bashed EVERY surface with a baseball bat! Cracked windscreen and broken rear window and we had two hours to drive home.... the car was a writeoff but even worst Hubby resigned from the job the day he went back to work!!!
Have a great day!

(eh, not so good for the WU photo section, oh well) Vid wasn't much better than the pics.
First one shows it accumulating on top of the car. It had been coming down for about 3 mins or so.

Photobucket">

Second one shows it in deluge and the trails bouncing off the car. It's a little blurry but you get the gist. No damage which I could make out. Knock on wood. Siding held up well and so did the car!

Really nasty hail storm here about an hour ago on the McHenry County border with Lake Co. by Fox Lake. I have a video and some pics I'll process later. It is still raining with storms circling one minute, and sun coming out the next. The hail was not too large (maybe dime sized, but driving in volume and amounts)

Hi Jus, wonderful story, we call them puppy farms here and they are a problem! As a registered breeder we have to comply with soooo many rules and regulations, but are constantly being told I must make a fortune out of my dogs, as breeders rip everybody off by charging high prices for pups! Yes sure........ pet shops here charge emormous prices for "dogs with papers" yes they give people a piece of paper but they are not Canine Association papers and people think they have got the real thing. I have a friend who paid $1500 for a little white fluffy crossbred dog which the pet shop let her have AT A REDUCED price as it had been in the shop for six weeks. When I told her what a pedigree dog would have cost her she was really suprised! Sorry this is my rant, here being a breeder is sometimes like a dirty word, I have people who wait up to two years for a pup on my list but I know some people breed just because they have sales waiting! Anyway........
I got nothing at the dog show yesterday, beaten all round by my friend who has two new pups from a dog I bred and gave to them and a little bitch we own in partnership, but thats why you breed, to improve the lines, and they are both gorgeous anyway! Have come down with the flu and debating the wisdom of going to to todays show as it is cold and damp, but will leave it as late as possible to make decision!
Jealous of going fishing, my daughter and partner took us fishing last year and I caught fish and the fishing bug!!!

Morning Sandi and Ylee! Thanks Ylee, he comes to my in-laws this morning.

A puppy mill is where they just breed the dogs constantly. The females produce way too many litters than is healthy. They do not care about the health of the animals and will breed even with heart defects or latent health issues. It is all about the money the pups may bring.

Usually, the puppy mill people are con artists and sell the dogs to unsuspecting people who think they are getting a healthy, well bred dog.
But, there are many pet stores which buy the dogs and sell them with registration papers for a lot of money $1,000.00, $500.00, etc...
The conditions are horrid at these places with pups who go untreated for health conditions and get just minimum care. Usually, the cages are stacked and the dogs only are allowed out to breed and put back in their cage.

Most of the time there are many breeds at one mill. This mill had all small dogs, Pekingese, Pomeranians, Lhapsa's There are many still at the Chicago Canine Rescue Center (shameless plug) waiting to be adopted.

Gorgeous day on tap here. No humidity. May go fishing with my wonderful Hubby :) Have a good one!

A puppy mill? Never see the sun?

I am confused, what on earth is a puppy mill? I have visions of the little peke dragging a cart of coal out of the mines!

Have a great, great holiday in California!

So, in case you didn't read last night:
Today, I drove my in-laws to the North Side of the City to an animal shelter which had a little pekingese dog available for rescue.
They lost their 13 yr old male peke about a month ago to old age. They have little Rosey, who is about 7 yrs old and wanted another Peke. They have always had two or three peke's at a time. It is their breed and they just love them. My in-laws are in their late 70's.

We went downtown to meet little Bismark for adoption at the Chicago Canine Rescue and the Shelter was JUST THE BEST! These volunteers or staff are just the top of the nice chain! My in-laws just fell in love with little Bismark. And, the volunteer or coordinator was thrilled to make the match!

They had brought their other little pekingese, Rosey, too. So she could meet Bismark. It is required. Well, everyone got along very well.

Tomorrow, the shelter volunteer will drive Mr. Bismark out to my in-laws house to do a 'home visit'. Then, if everything goes well, they will leave him and the adoption will be complete!
I truly believe this little dog (rescued from a puppy mill) will go from 'rags to riches' in one day!

And, everyone lived happily ever after. Because, sometimes, we just need everyone to live happily ever after and just be excited we saw it happen for real :) Even when it is a Pekingese!

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR NEW HOME! BISMARK!!!

Hi Ozgalah, that's funny about the counsel meeting! No one argues when it is raining so hard, lol. Glad you are up high.
Good luck with the dog show and let us know how you all did!

Tomorrow, I take my husband's parents to Chicago to see a pekingese they wish to rescue. Their male peke passed about a month or so ago. The rescue peke is 5 yrs old and was a puppy mill dog. We shall see. Not sure about the shyness around people yet. But if there is one home which would be perfect for this little rescue dog, it would be the in-laws. They are patient, routine oriented and it is a very quiet home. They will have great patience for this dog to come out of its shell. It does have to be introduced to Rosy, who is their lil female rescue peke. She's queen of the castle right now, so hope Rosy approves of 'Bismark'.

Haven't done any work with Boomer yet. I better get moving on making contacts with him. He's 7 months! UGH where does the time go. He's beautiful but I really need someone to look at the haw of his eyes and let me know if they think it is acceptable. I believe it is according to the breed standard. As his {HUGE} head grows, lol he is also changing quickly. He is beautiful, and such a good boy. Did I say that again, ha hahaha!

Ramble ramble! Good luck again Oz!

Maybe some Cali tunes to wind down the day soon ;)

Hi Jus, hope your weather has calmed down! We have had a hit of a cold front moving through and yesterday afternoon the winds were bad, we got some heavy rain (pity the new raintanks aren't in yet)and in the Adelaide some places got 47mls which for us is a lot! The funny thing was in the middle of the rain H went to council meeting as they want to change our towns flood risk! The engineers there to talk about the plans thought it was funny it was bucketing down, we should have no changes as our house was built up a metre to allow for any flood potenial but over the road there are a lot of houses lower than us and they are now in a bit of trouble if they continue with this draft plan! Hey ho the powers that be!!!
Have a great weekend, got two dog shows this weekend so hope weather improves!

falllike temps huh? That time of year now when fronts start really cooling us off. Anyway we can put a hold on things, really not ready to start talking falllike temps.Problem is with this big push of cool air the severe weather is going to be bad as your reports are already showing.Lets hope nothing serious occurs.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1775
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0307 PM CDT THU AUG 16 2012

AREAS AFFECTED...PARTS OF E CNTRL IL INTO SRN IND

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH LIKELY

VALID 162007Z - 162130Z

PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...80 PERCENT

SUMMARY...A NEW WW WILL PROBABLY BE ISSUED ACROSS PARTS OF
CENTRAL/SOUTHERN INDIANA WITHIN THE NEXT HOUR.

DISCUSSION...CLUSTERING OF STORMS SOUTHEAST OF SPRINGFIELD IL
APPEARS TO BE FOCUSED NEAR A WEAK SURFACE LOW AT THE INTERSECTION OF
INITIAL STALLED OUTFLOW BOUNDARY AND THE SOUTHEASTWARD ADVANCING
SURFACE COLD FRONT. THIS APPEARS TO BE ON THE SOUTHERN FRINGE OF
30-50 KT WESTERLY 500 MB FLOW...WITH PERHAPS LOW-LEVEL WARM
ADVECTION CONTRIBUTING TO A SOUTHEASTWARD PROPAGATION INTO CLOSER
PROXIMITY TO THE OUTFLOW BOUNDARY...WHERE A MORE STRONGLY HEATED
BOUNDARY LAYER WITH SIZABLE CAPE MAY SUPPORT FURTHER INTENSIFICATION
DURING THE NEXT FEW HOURS. THIS ENVIRONMENT ALSO APPEARS MORE
CONDUCIVE TO DOWNBURSTS AND NEW STRENGTHENING SURFACE COLD POOL
DEVELOPMENT WITH A MORE SUBSTANTIVE RISK FOR STRONG SURFACE GUSTS.
ACTIVITY LIKELY WILL PROGRESS SOUTHEAST OF WW 582 INTO SOUTH CENTRAL
INDIANA DURING THE 21-23Z TIME FRAME.

Nice group of "California" songs. If you havn't heard it, listen to Roy Orbison's song, "California Blue", it's another good one. I believe it was one of his last ones, before his untimely death.--It's on Youtube.

Nasty down in Central IL. Well, 2 severe storm warnings down there and lots of magenta hues on that map. This MCD may be a little late, but better late then never.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1773
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
1247 PM CDT THU AUG 16 2012

AREAS AFFECTED...E CNTRL MO...PARTS OF CNTRL/SRN IL AND IND

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE

VALID 161747Z - 161915Z

PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...40 PERCENT

SUMMARY...SEVERE WIND POTENTIAL THROUGH 20-21Z APPEARS LOW...BUT THE
NEED FOR A WW MAY NOT BE OUT OF THE QUESTION LATER THIS AFTERNOON OR
EVENING.

DISCUSSION...VIGOROUS NEW CONVECTIVE DEVELOPMENT ACROSS CENTRAL
ILLINOIS APPEARS MOSTLY IN RESPONSE TO LOWER/MID TROPOSPHERIC WARM
ADVECTION CORRESPONDING TO STRONG 2-HOUR SURFACE PRESSURE FALLS...
IN THE WAKE OF THE CONVECTIVE SYSTEM WEAKENING ACROSS MICHIGAN AND
INDIANA. STILL AHEAD OF THE FRONT...LINGERING LOW-LEVEL
MOISTURE...RELATIVELY STEEP MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES...AND STRONG
VERTICAL SHEAR BENEATH 40-50 KT WESTERLY 500 MB FLOW...SUPPORT
POTENTIAL FOR HAIL IN STRONGER CELLS. HOWEVER...WESTERLY DEEP LAYER
MEAN FLOW LIKELY WILL REMAIN PROMINENT IN TENDING TO ADVECT ACTIVITY
ACROSS THE EXPANDING RESIDUAL DOWNSTREAM SURFACE COLD POOL. THIS IS
EXPECTED TO LIMIT DAMAGING WIND POTENTIAL...PARTICULARLY IN THE
PRESENCE OF RATHER MODEST...AND WEAKENING...AMBIENT LOW-LEVEL /850
MB/ WIND FIELDS.

ADDITIONAL SCATTERED STRONG BOUNDARY LAYER BASED STORM DEVELOPMENT
MAY NOT BE OUT OF THE QUESTION LATER THIS AFTERNOON IN CLOSER
PROXIMITY TO THE OUTFLOW BOUNDARY ACROSS PARTS OF SOUTHERN INDIANA
AND ILLINOIS...INTO THE VICINITY OF ITS INTERSECTION WITH THE COLD
FRONT ADVANCING SOUTHEASTWARD ACROSS PARTS OF WEST CENTRAL ILLINOIS
AND EAST CENTRAL MISSOURI. GENERALLY SOUTH OF STRONGER
WESTERLIES...AND MID-LEVEL FORCING FOR ASCENT SPREADING ACROSS THE
GREAT LAKES REGION...SUPPORT FOR UPSCALE GROWTH WITH ORGANIZED
SEVERE WEATHER POTENTIAL IS MORE UNCERTAIN. BUT...BOUNDARY LAYER
CAPE WILL BE SIZABLE...AND IT MAY NOT BE OUT OF THE QUESTION THAT
THE BOUNDARY INTERSECTION COULD PROVIDE THE FOCUS FOR ANOTHER
EXPANDING STORM CLUSTER.

Don't quite like the way that's bowing. One severe storm warning in Iowa had it producing ping pong ball sized hail and gust to 60mph.
I believe it.

Wow, that line just morphed into two lines. double whammy?

Off to close the windows and maybe lie down for a while. Stay safe.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 1771
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0357 AM CDT THU AUG 16 2012

AREAS AFFECTED...PORTIONS IA...NRN IL...CENTRAL/SRN WI...WRN LM.

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY

VALID 160857Z - 161130Z

PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...20 PERCENT

SUMMARY...CONVECTION IS INCREASING IN COVERAGE WITHIN BROAD/ELEVATED
WAA REGIME...FROM SRN/WRN IA TO CENTRAL WI. THIS TREND SHOULD
CONTINUE FOR ANOTHER 2-3 HOURS AS AREA OF TSTMS TRANSLATES EWD
ACROSS REMAINDER DISCUSSION AREA. SPORADIC LARGE HAIL WILL BE
PRIMARY CONCERN. ISOLATED GUSTS APCHG SVR LIMITS CANNOT BE RULED
OUT EITHER.

DISCUSSION...AT 08Z...SFC MESOANALYSIS SHOWED COLD FRONT ROUGHLY
FROM APOSTLE ISLANDS WI SWWD NEAR EAU...CCY...DSM...FNB..MHK LINE.
FRONT SHOULD CONTINUE TO MOVE ESEWD ACROSS THIS REGION 15-20 KT.
TSTMS HAVE DEVELOPED ON BOTH SIDES OF FRONT IN REGIME OF LOW-LEVEL
WAA ABOVE SFC. NARROW CORRIDOR OF PRECONVECTIVE MUCAPE NEAR COLD
FRONT WAS ESTIMATED AT AROUND 800 J/KG OVER NERN WI...INCREASING

VALUES STRONGLY DEPENDENT ON CHOSEN LIFTED PARCEL AND RESULTANT
DEPTH OF BUOYANT LAYER.

SFC AIR MASS ON BOTH SIDES OF FRONT WILL CONTINUE TO STABILIZE
DIABATICALLY FROM COMBINATION OF NOCTURNAL SFC COOLING AND PRECIP
INVOF TSTMS....WITH ADDITIONAL FACTOR OF CAA BEHIND FRONT. THAT
FACTOR WILL MITIGATE POTENTIAL FOR SVR GUSTS. HOWEVER...MODIFIED
RAOBS AND FCST SOUNDINGS SUGGEST LAYER OF DRYING BETWEEN SFC AND
BASE OF CAPE-BEARING LAYER AROUND 700 MB...IN SUPPORT OF DOWNDRAFT
MAINTENANCE.

Ylee, my last blog headline (left up waaayyy too long) said Bring in the Lawn Furniture Chica goland... So I was asking if, while we were on vacat...oh nevermind...

kk I suppose it was just funny at the moment lol.

The vids are basically a California playlist of really good tunes. NEw posted The Fifth Dimension, California My Way;
The others so far are: The Rivieras, California Sun; Mamas and the Papas, California Dreamin; Led Zep, Going to California; Don Henley, Boys of Summer; Bob Segar, Hollywood Nights; Is it Kenny Loggins? Highway to the Danger Zone.

Thanks NEw!!! Rant at 10!

Never been west of Dallas; can't help you with any Cali memories! :(
