Tomorrow, I take my husband's parents to Chicago to see a pekingese they wish to rescue. Their male peke passed about a month or so ago. The rescue peke is 5 yrs old and was a puppy mill dog. We shall see. Not sure about the shyness around people yet. But if there is one home which would be perfect for this little rescue dog, it would be the in-laws. They are patient, routine oriented and it is a very quiet home. They will have great patience for this dog to come out of its shell. It does have to be introduced to Rosy, who is their lil female rescue peke. She's queen of the castle right now, so hope Rosy approves of 'Bismark'.
Haven't done any work with Boomer yet. I better get moving on making contacts with him. He's 7 months! UGH where does the time go. He's beautiful but I really need someone to look at the haw of his eyes and let me know if they think it is acceptable. I believe it is according to the breed standard. As his {HUGE} head grows, lol he is also changing quickly. He is beautiful, and such a good boy. Did I say that again, ha hahaha!

I even got my hair styled for the trip today with a very choppy, layered fringy cut (med length/short) which says beeeach! will soft curl in the wind along the 101! Naturally mussed, love it ;) I am starting to pack and it's 9 days away.

Today, I drove my in-laws to the North Side of the City to an animal shelter which had a little pekingese dog available for rescue.
They lost their 13 yr old male peke about a month ago to old age. They have little Rosey, who is about 7 yrs old and wanted another Peke. They have always had two or three peke's at a time. It is their breed and they just love them. My in-laws are in their late 70's.
We went downtown to meet little Bismark for adoption at the Chicago Canine Rescue and the Shelter was JUST THE BEST! These volunteers or staff are just the top of the nice chain! My in-laws just fell in love with little Bismark. And, the volunteer or coordinator was thrilled to make the match!
They had brought their other little pekingese, Rosey, too. So she could meet Bismark. It is required. Well, everyone got along very well.
Tomorrow, the shelter volunteer will drive Mr. Bismark out to my in-laws house to do a 'home visit'. Then, if everything goes well, they will leave him and the adoption will be complete!
I truly believe this little dog (rescued from a puppy mill) will go from 'rags to riches' in one day!
And, everyone lived happily ever after. Because, sometimes, we just need everyone to live happily ever after and just be excited we saw it happen for real :) Even when it is a Pekingese!

I am confused, what on earth is a puppy mill? I have visions of the little peke dragging a cart of coal out of the mines!

A puppy mill is where they just breed the dogs constantly. The females produce way too many litters than is healthy. They do not care about the health of the animals and will breed even with heart defects or latent health issues. It is all about the money the pups may bring.
Usually, the puppy mill people are con artists and sell the dogs to unsuspecting people who think they are getting a healthy, well bred dog.
But, there are many pet stores which buy the dogs and sell them with registration papers for a lot of money $1,000.00, $500.00, etc...
The conditions are horrid at these places with pups who go untreated for health conditions and get just minimum care. Usually, the cages are stacked and the dogs only are allowed out to breed and put back in their cage.
Most of the time there are many breeds at one mill. This mill had all small dogs, Pekingese, Pomeranians, Lhapsa's There are many still at the Chicago Canine Rescue Center (shameless plug) waiting to be adopted.

I got nothing at the dog show yesterday, beaten all round by my friend who has two new pups from a dog I bred and gave to them and a little bitch we own in partnership, but thats why you breed, to improve the lines, and they are both gorgeous anyway! Have come down with the flu and debating the wisdom of going to to todays show as it is cold and damp, but will leave it as late as possible to make decision!
Jealous of going fishing, my daughter and partner took us fishing last year and I caught fish and the fishing bug!!!
How soon before you go.... must be soon :-) Have a wonderful time, relax and let someone else do the worrying for you !

Hi Sandi and Ozgalah, will respond a bit later. Just really busy. We leave next Sat. so I'm still here. Hard finding time to blog lately.
First one shows it accumulating on top of the car. It had been coming down for about 3 mins or so.
Second one shows it in deluge and the trails bouncing off the car. It's a little blurry but you get the gist. No damage which I could make out. Knock on wood. Siding held up well and so did the car!

We went on holiday to the UK and Hubby left car in secure parking (company car) we had heard about Sydney being battered by a hail storm on the news in the UK, we arrived home about 11pm dark and raining and the attendant brought the car to the door and it looked like someone had bashed EVERY surface with a baseball bat! Cracked windscreen and broken rear window and we had two hours to drive home.... the car was a writeoff but even worst Hubby resigned from the job the day he went back to work!!!

Thank you for your note about the puppy mill/puppy farm problem world wide. Yes, our breeders who are breeding responsibly meet strict guidelines for their breeding organization AND their county and local municipal governments.
Compliance is not a problem, unless one IS the business of puppy mill. Sometimes, I believe there are people who are just ignorant and really do just get caught up in the money. There can be money, but over many years and years for a legitimate breeder, it comes to about 5 cents a pup! LOL
Unfortunately, the puppy mill people don't test for so many of the traits which we watch for (and test for) generation after generation.
I am soooo cautious and just beginning to investigate the lineage for Boomer. Even though he came from a legitimate breeder. Still skeptical.
I have seen so many people get broken hearts from expensive pet store dogs with bad hearts, brain problems, siezures. Oh my :(
Do you have easy access to DNA? OFA etc... there? It is getting so much easier these days for us here to do the right thing or just buy w/o the breeding rights.
Sandi, glad your organizations have done well at getting the puppy business safe in the UK. Here, out in the countryside, unfortunately so many bad breeding operations can go undetected.
Hubby and I don't leave until Saturday. So, we did a little fishing last Saturday and errands. Then yesterday we had to clean the whole house. I usually do this before we go on a vacation (it's a weird habit) but hubby helped me. I'll probably get a new vacuum out of it ha haha (he surely found it to be a pain to run like I do) and possibly a new water softener after he scrubbed lime deposit from our shower for a looong time! lol!!

On another note. I have had tests for over a month, mri, e-ray, blood, cat-scans, scans we shall not mention. It has been determined my horrible attacks of back pain are ---
Diverticulitis (attack) but Diverticulosis condition and Spastic (yeah, you know--IBS) Ok righty o!
Would also like to mention-- now that this has been discovered, my life is forever changed and food is now THE ENEMY! It really does s&%k.
Farewell hot dogs, pizza, gyros with cucumber sauce...oh the list goes on and on. I basically can have broth. (j/k I'm learning. And, actually with this low residue, bland diet lately/no lactose...it is going rather well. I am very, very scared of the pain, so I behave)
Ramble off! Done w/the health crud. Off to California armed with the knowledge food will not destroy my trip with pain. Thank goodness.

Sorry to hear you have had some health issues but it sounds as if you are getting to grips with it, yes thank you my flu is going!
Lost again at the dog show, beaten by my major opposition, don't mind losing to a better dog but when everybody outside the ring says "you were robbed" its a little frustrating. My girl got beaten by my friends pup but as I bred her father I am not dissappointed with that thats why we breed to improve!
I understand the cleaning thing even if we are leaving in the middle of the night everything has to be clean and in its place ready for when we come back.
In case I don't get back to the blog, safe journey and I hope you have a fabulous trip!
