Hi all! As we get closer to the opening of the Olympic Games in London, I got the idea to do an Olympics Blog. (It will also take my mind off our drought for a while).
I admire all the youth who get off their couches, put down their video games and combine their talent with their PERSEVERANCE to master their sport and represent our Team U.S.A. Plus, the youth around the world who do the same to honor their home countries.
And, we applaud all the self-less parents who drive to and from the practices, the workouts, pay for the lessons and the tournaments and camps for their little (and big) super stars! The moments you all have trained so hard for are finally here! What better Country to hold these games than historic London town!

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!
What's your favorite Olympic sport? What's your favorite Olympic memory or moment? -Please share-

Also, I am going to post about athletes who are from my area or from Illinois/Wisconsin, and watch them as we go through the games to cheer them on.
Please add any athletes you would like to cheer on and tell us where they are from in your community! We'll cheer them on, too.

"May the world be delivered from crime and killing and be free from the clash of arms."
—From the early Olympic truce

LOL I know NEw, it's a knack I have...just one more thing...one more thing. I can't even leave the house without going inside 3 more times for something 'else' I forgot to bring w/me.

New blog soon. Tonight probably. Off to the rat race.

Oh--I forgot the weather. It's really beautiful here in Chiland today. Fog in the outlying areas burned off. Nice day expected. (We'll gladly take cold fronts after this summer!)

Have a good Tuesday!

Love the way you sign off at night and then add 2 or 3 more paragraphs, but you obvuously had to add the catfish pictures. We use to catch something similar at our lake in New Hampshire, but they only came out at night,so we would fish in the evening.
Anyway looks like a real strong cold front headed your way early next week.yep, cold fronts are going to start getting stronger as we head toward labor day.

Hi Jus - Thanks for the kind things you have said about London2012 ..... it went a lot better than I thought it might, but I don't know why I doubted the organisers.... when the chips are down, us Brits put up a fight!

The PM actaully gave a short speech today to thank the 10's of thousands of volunteers who gave up two weeks of their summer to help with the smooth running of the games, and the security firm who drafted in the army at the last cry to help out with security, have donated £1.5 million to the army benevolent fund!

So, all in all - a 'Great Success' on the sports' field and off, so to speak :-)

Hi NEw, got done working about 8:30 pm, what a Monday! Glad we were able to see the show last night though. It really was so creative and loved, loved the music. Pretty much the same music you liked, too.

Glad to see on your blog the storms didn't cause much damage. (Except maybe white caps in the mall parking lot, whew!)

Not much new here, it was a rainy, over-cast, humid, but chilly day. Hard to believe these temps in August are cooler then our temps in April! LOL Too weird. Very pretty sunset tonight. Certain someone had to capture it for WU. I was working and couldn't. Hope someone did.

Off for the night, tomorrow should clear up and be a really beautiful day--stay well all ships.

oops forgot to post my catfish I caught yesterday off the boat right in the marina. Niiice. Hubby caught one which was three times the size (the head was huge!) but it snapped the line! Darnit. These were a lot more fun than the drum fish we've been catching lately in the bay. Usually don't even go for catfish. Strange thing is, the carp who usually hang around in the marina waters have disappeared this summer. Maybe they died in the high temps of the water? ok ramble ramble again...night all

Hi,Jus,watched the closing last night, like watching a British pop concert, were a few things I could have done with out,Russell Brand, and Jessie J,but most of it was pretty cool, with history of British music.
Congrats to the US women who really ran away with the show in these olympics.

Hi Bf, hope the weather there in OK is better. T-1MillionK btw...

Watching the show for the close. Have tears (maybe cause it's been a really indescribable week) but the music actually is amazing and so is the close of this magical time. The 2012 Olympics were just --WoW!--

Teardrop...it was awesome.

Hi jus,
Hope you are feeling better this eve.

I see some rain on your regional radar. This is good.

Olympics over now. But gosh, some good moments. Who doesn't love Missy Franklin? The athlete I watched all through and was so happy for, Louis Smith of Great Britain. If a man can be stunning, he is when he's on that pommel horse.

So many good twists and turns in this year's games. What an experience and lifelong memory for all the athletes to take home with them!
:)

Hi Sandi, yes I see and while maybe it is good the energy is released (I'd like to think of it that way) can't help but worry about how active it is.

Cool and downright chilly here in Chicago. Sort of like your summer, Sandi.
But, clear skies and eventually it should warm up nicely today. Still a rip current warning out by Lake Michigan. Winds are calmer away from the Lake but still kicking out in the Lake and the waves won't subside for a while. It was fierce yesterday with 10 ft wave heights.

Major, major back attack yesterday for me (it is possibly digestive fAnyway, the pain radiates to my back.
Still recovering but at least I am able to walk today with a little less pain.
The list of foods I cannot have is just awful. No coffee, no milk/milk products, no whole grain yet, no no no no no no NOTHING. I basically drink broth. But I'll tell you - I am scared of the pain so I do it. Hopefully when this flare up is over, I can begin gradually to figure out if food is the issue. We (Dr. and I) are working on it. Never have had any kind of chronic illness before, so this really stinks. And, omg is there a lot of garbage on the internet when trying to research these matters. Jus sayin. Ok rant off.

Have a great Saturday.

This is from our NWS in Chicago. They are serious about this storm coming in. Please listen and don't go by the water.

.. Stay away from Lake Michigan...

Lake Michigan will be a dangerous place for recreational
boaters... swimmers... kayakers... and thrill seekers tonight through
Saturday. Everyone is urged to stay away from the lake.
Bikers... joggers... and walkers should use extreme caution along
the Lakefront. Stay off of piers and break walls.

North winds will increase to 20 to 30 mph over Southern Lake
Michigan and nearby Lakeshore areas late tonight and continue
through Friday. Gusts to near 40 mph are possible Friday. Winds
will slowly diminish Friday night and Saturday. The strong winds
will generate waves of up to 10 to 14 feet Friday. In
addition... there will be a high risk for dangerous rip
currents... especially along the Indiana beaches.

Instability caused by unseasonably cool air moving over the very
Warm Lake water will also make waterspouts likely over Southern
Lake Michigan overnight into Friday morning. There will be
numerous lake effect showers and even a few thunderstorms.

The waterspout threat will diminish during the day Friday and
showers will be moving out by Friday night. But dangerous waves
and rip currents are likely to continue through Saturday. Anyone
looking forward to boating or going to the beach should wait until
Sunday... which will see partly sunny skies... light winds... .and
temperatures in the mid to upper 70s.

Hi Sandi, I thought so! Congrats. What a win. Then our gals in the Soccer!

NEw, I know what you mean. We spent more time ducking the heat and concerned about drought, and fixing boats than enjoying this summer. It's almost gone. We need the rain though.

It is over 100 years since we won a dressage medal and then we win two gold in one go!

Ha ha, glad you got a kick out of it Shore. Thanks for the tunes.

Such a nice steady rain falling here in Northern IL (by Lindenhurst) the earth sighs in relief. Was so awesome to wake up to a real 'rainy day'. It's exactly what we need all day and night...

I saw the cutest thing on the way to work today. A deer feeding with a bunch of geese, lol. I am processing the picture now and will post it in a little while.

Sandi and BF - I have not forgotten about your posts. Thanks for bringing more Olympics News!!!
Last night saw a lot of the hurdles and sprints. Wow! Double medals for US! Can't blink in those races or you'll miss them...what speed!

Ok back to work (like Shore said, lol) I'll fix my pics of the little deer if I can soon.

Also, photo op for any enthusiasts of Water Spouts. Warm waters over Lake Michigan and full fetch NNE winds should mean waterspouts. Be very, very careful though. These waves WILL wash you off the breakwaters. Take our word for it. Batten down the hatches Chi and Indiana!

Maybe the Cavi has a bad thermostat?

Hi NEw, you snuck in. Waiting for a tow truck for a long overdue repair to the old $800.00 Cavalier. It is overheating for some reason (maybe because it's been 100 degrees all summer, lol duh...)

Anyhoo...yes, lessening, not completely over. But, with such a mild winter and looooong mild Spring me thinks Fall is going to begin early as well. Let's hope it does bring rain.

The million dollar rain was bout a week or two late up here :( Hope some other areas are able to salvage what they have.

Jus,I think your right, but heatwave and drought will be lessening,if not ending.Usually as we progress through August, those cold fronts start to get stronger with more rain connected to them.Probably too late now for the farmers out there.

Hi Jus

Continuing the theme of the show jumping and horses in the Olympics... did you see the huge mistake the Daily Express made today? It posted a photo on the front page of the paper showing all the gold medal winners from yesterday. Unfortunately, the photo they included of the British winning 'dressage' team was actually the Dutch bronze winners!! lol

Feeling like the heat and drought have ended. Just my gut (NO facts, lol). Yesterday, I took seeds out to plant late summer veggies and started preparing the beds. Amazing since I absolutely had no desire to have a garden back in Spring and didn't for the first time in years. Hmmmm.

I'm off work today and will be back later when I get caught up with chores, errands etc...or, maybe I'll just go fishing :)

Hi, posting this really quickly before trains go to bed here ;) Thank you for stopping you all. Watched the gymnastics again tonight. Tomorrow I'll have more time to catch up w/the blog and Olympics. But--Way to go Olympians!

This is REALLY AWESOME ABOUT RIP CURRENTS!
Link

Rip currents this year have claimed so many lives! (Gosh, Lake Michigan and waterways in N. IL have claimed a lot of lives this year :(

It is really due to the weather (and the water) being hotter in temp. people going to the water who are NEWbies... and the water is hotter. Ok won't go there. But the FOX RIVER is horribly low and has caused accidents apparently. Moving on...cause I want to show the excellent Vid...

This is a really good vid to protect yourselves if you ever come to Chicago or Michigan or Indiana. Or on a Great Lake. Actually, this could apply where ever RIP CURRENTS are prevalent!

Thanks for watching and Sandi and BF I'll be back tomorrow. Thanks for coming by.

Good Night all ships at sea or in port, or where ever you may be. Trains are going to bed. Sweet dreams.

And, now for the vid (uhm kind o pbs schtuff, but I like it and very informative):

Good morning, jus.
To see Great Britain win a jumpoff with the Netherlands to take Team Jumping GOLD for the first time since 1952, that was so cool. Saudi Arabia won bronze. In this sport, a lot depends on the horse as an athlete. Unless you're real lucky and get your hands on a good one when it is young and unproven, these are pricey horses. Young jumpers cost easily six figures, and seven if they've already shown outstanding talent. Interesting the horse has to be at least 9 years old to compete in the Olympics.

Speaking of age, our 18-year-old Reed Kessler and Cylana did fine in their first round, only one fault for time, then had eight faults for a couple rails down in each of the next two rounds, so they will not be competing in the individual jumping competition. Rich Fellers and Flexible will be contenders for the individual. He's 52, riding in his first Olympics. His horse is 16. This horse and rider make show jumping look easy.

Truly, it's like they say about football... any given Sunday. Anybody's game, and one little misstep can screw up your chances.

Sandi,
Don't know which is more popular in the U.S., "English" riding or "Western." I imagine in most parts of the world people ride "English."
:)

Congrats on the Team Jumping GOLD!

Hiya NEw, yes the trip should be pretty nice. I have been taking ideas from friends of where to go and what to see. I know I want to see the sequoias after my husband's conference. It is a long way away, but I think we are going to get there. (Anaheim up to the SNP? it's doable)

Glad you got to spend some time with good weather on the beaches! Certainly must have been a great day! Niiiice!

May post some tunes later...off to catch up on WU. Take care all.

Going to be a long week again. Hoping to catch up each night on the Olympic events. Finally got to watch a little of the Jumping! And ohhh those storms.

Courtesy of the London 2012 site:
I love this photo with one of the jumps being over the bus :)

Weather here will be nice today with high of 86. (I actually will try to make it without the A/C until it hits 95 tomorrow once again.

News on the victims and their horror in the temple trickling in. There will be a news conference at 10 am from Oak Creek. Prayers up for those recovering and for their mental well being, and again for families of the victims.

Anyway, hope you all have a good productive week. Vacation coming up for us soon at the end of the month to California--can't wait!!!

Our Hearts ache for all those in mourning in Oak Creek, Wisconsin tonight.

Link

Just sobbed when trying to read through the horrid details to make any sense... 'The Scream' comes to mind.
Just savage and senseless killing.
Just want to scream: "HEY, these are our people! Our friends, our family, our neighbors, our co-workers!" ...Scream for it to stop! Head in hands tonight.

This passage is from a site called 'Sikh Prayer That Longs For a World at Peace'

K.P. Singh

"Ardas, the closing prayer in the Sikh worship tradition, ends with a universal blessing for all humanity:

%u201C By thy grace, may there be peace and goodwill among all people everywhere.%u201D Sikh scriptures remind us to understand and celebrate our common humanity: %u201CRecognize all humanity as one race, one brotherhood.%u201D

Candles lit for all the victims and their families and friends.
