March 2014 Global Temperature Update

The NOAA/NCDC global temperature data for March 2014 was measured at an anomaly of 0.71ºC. The 4th warmest March on record follows the 21st warmest February and 4th warmest January. The year to date is now the 7th warmest on record (up from 11th through February).



It is now 86 months since we saw a record monthly anomaly in the NCDC dataset (0.86ºC in January 2007).

2014 Arctic Sea Ice Minimum

The ice in the northern hemisphere has finished its winter freeze and hit its maximum extent of the year. The UIUC data for the Arctic ice cap recorded a 2014 maximum of 13.487 million square kilometers. This is the 5th lowest value in the 36-year dataset. It is the lowest maximum since 2011. The 10-year average dropped slightly (0.028 million square kilometers), for the 13th consecutive year in a row, to the lowest value on record.

The NOAA/NCDC global temperature data for February 2014 was measured at an anomaly of 0.41ºC. The 4th warmest January on record was followed by the 21st warmest February on record, and the year to date is now the 11th warmest on record.

Winters In St. Louis

XKCD brought attention to my home town of St. Louis last month with a comic about how shifting baselines affect our perception of weather and climate change.



It's a clever refutal of the narrow claim that one instance of cold weather in one place disproves global warming. The comic points out the cherry-picking of that layer by taking things up a layer and showing that cold weather has actually decreased in that location over time.
