I am a day or two late, but I hope you had a great birthday.

Better late than never.

This blog would not be the same without you.

Ruby = 40

Here's a good Wikipedia article: Wedding Aniversaries

Check out that 90th!

Okay UK - I give - which anniversary is the Ruby? Silver - 25; Golden - 50; Ruby?

It sounds like a good time was had by all - despite all the hard work for you. I know your parents were happy and appreciative of all the work.

I wondered why you were having to do all that baking, UK. Didn't seem fair to do your own party...makes sense that it was in honor of your parents!

I am amused by the Prince Harry stuff; this country is far too interested in the Rupert Murdock type of celebrity crap as news (how often does the latest tabloid story of Hollywood's starlets push real news off the front page?)...when in fact the young man is just letting off steam. He just happens to be a bit more in the public eye. Good thing he has big hands!

After days of sunny skies and warmish days we had .13" of rain yesterday...what a treat. It might have saved my sorry excuse for a lawn...I just mow what's out there...and definately washed the salty dust off my outdoor plants.

My sympathies to all who are being/about to be affected by Isaac. Rotty, hang in there kid. DotMom and JoeK, Ylee, hang on...it's moving slowly.

UK I always read your posts but I guess I have never told you how much I enjoy them. You are a gifted writer.

Hope I am not too late to wish you a HAPPY BIRTHDAY! We here in Orlando have been dealing with a bad bear tropical storm called Isaac. It seems he has been with us for months. The home prep time for a storm is very tiring but must be done. This morning we have had numerous tornado watches and warnings even though the storm has moved way into the Gulf of Mexico.

Hope you are getting rest from your big party. As for Harry.....what a guy. I love him.

Thanks everyone for your birthday wishes, the actual day of my birthday passed in a heated blur of whipped butter, cracked eggs and soft peaks....

Without any help from Harry.

The party, held yesterday, went very well – it was actually to celebrate my parents Ruby wedding anniversary – and all my hard work in the kitchen was scoffed down at an alarming rate of knots by a scrum of young male relatives. I was delighted to make a tiny dent in their 6'3”+ appetites (they are seriously HUGE LADS fresh off rugby tours of Europe). I made 6 dozen BIG cupcakes (chocolate, vanilla, coffee and walnut and lemon drizzle), a huge Victoria Sandwich (strawberry jam filled rich sponge cake) and 2 extra large Borrowdale tea loaves (mixed dried fruits soak in strong tea all night before being transformed into a soft moist fruit cake) served slathered in butter. I didn't even eat ONE. Too busy.

By the time I'd cleared up the mess last night I was feeling BROKEN but appreciated. I could have slept on a billiards table I was SO KNACKERED.

Prince Harry was a popular topic of conversation at the party. You might be surprised to hear that only about 10% of us had viewed THE PHOTOS. Only one (tawdry MURDOCH owned) British tabloid newspaper has published them, against all press guidelines and frankly contrary to public opinion. Personally I haven't looked, and don't plan to intrude his privacy. The lad is a normal, fit, red blooded 27 year old with a healthy bank balance, good looks and an impish charm. Plus worldwide fame, thanks to his Granny.

And Vegas is infamous for it's strip.

Though possibly more for a Brazilian strip now. Like I said, I haven't looked.

His security detail SHOULD have removed all phones from the bikini clad young lovelies who sought to cavort with a handsome, presumably sozzled Prince. Frankly it's hard to know where the indiscreet slapper who sold our spare heir down the river hid the thing.

Not anywhere anyone wanted to look obviously.

I doubt his family are really angry with him, more amused – he'll be getting a ribbing up at Balmoral. Lord knows what pictures would have come to light had the Queens party loving sister Princess Margaret been living in this modern age of tiny cameras and instant uploads. Prince Harry was letting his hair down before heading back into Afghanistan as a Apache helicopter pilot. Let him live. He knows all too well that life can be cut tragically short.

In other news there is apparently a LION on the loose in south east England this morning.

No really. Though nobody has reported one missing there have been several sightings since yesterday. Police are using heat seeking cameras from helicopters to try and trace it.

People are being told to stay indoors until it's been caught. Most especially our Dirty Harry. He learned the hard way how deceptively dangerous those dirty blonde manes can be...

Oh, here everyone is! I thought things were pretty dead on the old post. Happy Birthday UK, and I hope that Prince Harry did, in fact, crash your party. It would have been an unexpected excitement.

Alas, I fear that the poor prince is probably at his grandmother's palace, wearing a dirty smock, dusting all the jars of preserves in the palace cellars. After which there will be the transfer to duty at Tristan de Cunha, "the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world" -- Wikipedia. "A place so remote and desolate that they have to beat the owls off the chickens" -- DHaupt.

I, too, hope Isaac hits some place that might at least need the rain. We could definitely use a little here. A friend who grew up across the street dropped by today, hauled a hose up to my roof and hosed down the solar panels. You can imagine what a black car would look like if it hadn't been washed for six months; the solar panels are black once again. It looks like dirt may have robbed me of about 15% of my electricity production. We've had no significant rain since April! And, there are a lot of gravel quarries just a few miles up-wind of here.

However, today was a really lovely day. Quite cool for this time of year, only reached 72F. A little warmer tomorrow.

BRLA: welcome out of lurkdom :)

At least y'all need some rain, or so I hear. There seems to be lots of salt water intrusion in LA and MS these days b/c of the excessive drought.
Here in N. FL, we've had mucho too much of the wet stuff since Debby came through due to a stationary crescent front that curved from the GA border north of Pensacola all the way up toward Savannah, GA. It's been giving me so far 40+ inches. We had an amazing two days of sunshine. Forgot what that looked like... pretty nice weather. Today it even had a nice breeze (courtesy of Isaac).. just an AWESOME day...

As for Katrina, yikes, I forget, that's indeed coming up, too. Is it really the end of August already? I hope it will stay a "small" storm with very little wind and lots of rain for y'all over yonder in the Delta, and very little rain for my region.

Rotty I feel your pain. (I'm a regular lurker on Joe's blog). We (baton Rouge) are now under a tropical storm warning. Gas stations just outside the city are running out of gas today! The saddest thing for this area is that Tuesday will be the 7th anniversary of Katrina. Couple that with the more recent Guatav and there a "bunch" of anxious people around here. I don' t think anyone has a clue where this one is going. You stay safe.
