Blasting heatwave

The vicious record-breaking Midwest heat wave has extended into Virginia--we've suffered many days recently with highs hitting 38C or more measured temperature, and heat indices as high as 48C.

June 30 Derecho

Late evening June 30 a very violent storm ("derecho") passed through Virginia. Local effects were relatively minor--16 hour electrical outage, roads blocked overnight by fallen trees, some very large trees uprooted, others snapped in half.

At the arrival of this storm the wind blew very forcefully for some minutes, seemingly without gusting. After that arrival event, the storm changed to a quality similar to a routine thunderstorm.
