Doing right by the chickens
By: jitterymoose , 5:23 AM GMT on September 05, 2006
Well, it's sad, but the chickens are finally off to another family. It was quite a bit of work to get their pen dismantled and dug up, and we hauled them over to a friend's house (she said she'd take them) since we can't very well move them to Fairbanks. With the chicken area cleaned, limed, and re-graveled and seeded, I'm sure there will be quite the cacophony of grasses and flowers there in the spring! We got them moved over, but the lady who took them didn't have anyone to run the fence out, so the poor things were just in the chicken house. The family went over this afternoon and set it right--ran out fence, made sure there was a secure gate, tossed in some scratch, and said good-bye correctly--now they won't get bored and peck at each other, and I'm sure they're happier running around. I have 9 dozen eggs left in the refrigerator. I guess I'll have to find someone else who has chickens so I can continue to get fresh eggs. The thought of chickens at -55°F or worse in Fairbanks was just too much to contemplate! They'll be happy here. 'Night everyone! JM
