Copper Basin 300
By: jitterymoose , 7:34 AM GMT on January 12, 2009
Ah, the start of mushing season... :-) wish I were there (on the sidelines, or, better yet, like I do now -- following the races like an Ididiot from my computer).
Copper Basin 300 kicked off yesterday. 15 mushers are in to Paxson (everyone's out of Chistochina now), and while Lance Mackey looks to be in the #1 position, it looks like Hans Gatt beat him into Paxson by about a minute. They've changed the course, so I'm not quite sure what'll happen. Folks usually use the Paxson checkpoint to get their mandatory 12 hour layover. The last word from Barb down by the Copper River (she lives across the street from where we used to live), the temps had fallen down to -38°F and Gulkana Airport (where the temps are read out of) was a warm spot. Yikes.
Mushing update for fans out there: looks like Ken Anderson and Lance Mackey are both going to drop out of the Yukon Quest this year after word from the race that it could only guarantee $125K of the usual $200K purse. Lance has 24 dogs committed to a rookie musher whom he's helping out this year, so he's hesitant to run the back-to-back 1,000 mile races (YQ and Iditarod) with the same team like he's done in years past. It's a horrific blow to the YQ as they've been struggling for sponsors over the past 2 years, and with two top names (Sonny Lindner has already dropped out) out of the running, it'll be harder to attract corporate money.
JeffCityKid -- I have 50 gal. barrels behind the fence that the previous folks used for trash service. :-) I'm up this late because the wind is whipping around the north side of the house (...again) and it's just too hard to sleep with all the ruckus.
I've not been to Little America outside Green River, yet. :-) We've passed the only in Cheyenne a few times, but haven't stopped. It sounds like a fun place to drag the kids, though. :-) I LOVE those roadside places. Have you been to The Garden of Eden in KS? Freaky-weird and lots of fun. Hey, we stopped and saw IT and THE THING, and if you're headed on I-10 and Steins Railroad Ghost Town is still there, that's a really cool stop, too (at least it was in 2000 when that retired couple was running it).
Hope everyone's having a nice night! Check out http://www.cb300.com for race updates. They have a really nice poster this year, too, if anyone's interested.
Dentist tomorrow! I can't wait! :-)
