till poorly organized--but already deadly, and growing in size--Tropical Storm Erika is likely to cause problems in Puerto Rico on Thursday night into Friday. Erika may approach Florida as a Category 1 hurricane by Monday. At the same time, Hurricane Ignacio will be nearing the Hawaiian islands, potentially threatening the Big Island with an unprecedented hurricane landfall.

Although much media attention weather-wise (at least recently) for Hawaii has been about tropical storms (Kilo’s possible impact on the Hawaiian Isles and more in the pipeline) an even more interesting story has been the exceptional rainfall that has drenched the islands in recent days and the on-going record hot summer. Despite a record warm July, accumulating snow managed to dust the summit of Mauna Kea on the Big Island. Here are some details about the above events.

Erika is on track, but it's future is very uncertain. We need to be ready for a messy, weak, unthreatening-looking storm arriving in the Bahamas late Friday or Saturday, which then takes advantage of the warm water and favorable atmosphere to strengthen quickly not far from the Florida peninsula.

El Nino is certainly here and will be the dominate atmospheric long wave forcing mechanism over the next few months, particularly by late October. However, for now we can expect a continued quiet weather pattern across the East Coast.
