Will Erika Survive its Traverse of Hispaniola?

Tropical Storm Erika is headed into the teeth of Hispaniola's 10,000-foot high mountains, as the storm marches west-northwest at 17 mph, spreading torrential rains and sustained winds of 50 mph along its path. The biggest danger of the storm to the islands is heavy rainfall.

Although much media attention weather-wise (at least recently) for Hawaii has been about tropical storms (Kilo’s possible impact on the Hawaiian Isles and more in the pipeline) an even more interesting story has been the exceptional rainfall that has drenched the islands in recent days and the on-going record hot summer. Despite a record warm July, accumulating snow managed to dust the summit of Mauna Kea on the Big Island. Here are some details about the above events.

Tropical Storm Erika is heading toward the giant mountains of the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Disorganized systems sometimes die interacting with that terrain, but we can't be sure. So Florida remains on alert for an impactful system, but the odds of a strengthening hurricane hitting the state are diminished.

El Nino is certainly here and will be the dominate atmospheric long wave forcing mechanism over the next few months, particularly by late October. However, for now we can expect a continued quiet weather pattern across the East Coast.
