NEW - 20 Jul 2009 1918 and 2009 H1N1 Similarities Confirm Recombination

Hopefully, we will be able to choose whether to accept the H1N1 vaccine. Current rumblings about mandatory vaccination are considered "foilhead" talk by some. I hope that's true. Perhaps now is the time to research and decide on your own. We all want the best and safest thing for our families.

Not wanting to unnecessarily alarm anyone, nor contribute to a panic, however there appears to be a recent flu outbreak that -- at least to me -- bears watching and possible preventative measures.

I'll post new items here as they become available. Be safe all.

(((Crab))) And give a few to (((The Bride))), as well.

Was somewhat of a shocker to see your post on my blog during my lunchtime check in. You and Doc both have been absent a good bit this past year. You've both had good reasons but still missed ya.

I'm thinking there will be more flu cases, once school kicks back in and colder weather hits the Northern climes. Everyone stuck inside, packed like sardines in a can of mustard sauce, snorting and sneezing on each other and smearing mustardy germs everywhere.

I respect your decision to not vaccinate but I'm getting whatever they have to offer us here at work. I wouldn't dare get within 10 feet of my Dad, with his COPD, if I wasn't jabbed.

On another note, you're getting mail...

WOW, I am really sort of worried about this swine flu stuff, especially this fall when it comes this way for the season.

Hope it is not bad.

Wanted to add this link to an article from the Mayo Clinic about Swine Flu:

Mayo Clinic Looking South

Sounds like the southern hemisphere is having the same fatality rate as the 1918 epidemic.

{{rays}} you stinker, you have your blog closed. ;o) Love to you too, buddy. Give a little to the fam as well !

WXGeek, yep, and there's much more that I could post here, except I have yet to vet the information. Basically, there is an alleged investigative journalist in Austria that has brought suit via the FBI against the WHO and UN, as well as high-level corporate entities regarding Baxter's vaccine. It's a tangled web, and if I can vet the story, I'll post it here.

All I can say at this point, is that it reinforced my lifelong idea that vaccines -- while lifesaving sometimes -- can pose more of a risk that the virus. I haven't had a flu vaccine since I was 10. I'm never going to get one, and if it becomes mandatory, as is being discussed in a few countries, they'd better have some big, strong, folk wearing goodie-protectors to hold me down.

Hi Crab. You make a point with your blog. The Swine Flu does worry me. There have been a couple deaths in my area, and it has been concerning schools. But not now since school is over. Hopefully the Swine Flu outbreak won't turn into pandomonium.

Heya Emms!

Yep... if the story I just posted from the L.A. times has even a shred of truth to it, then the expected attenuation of H1N1 is not occurring.

Gams! LOL Feel free to ramble any time. Stop by anytime ;o) Yep, we're getting it put together here. One of the things I don't like seeing is that a couple of structures that lost their roofs have put back the same thing. I think that the cause of SOME of the roof loss is (a) plastic soffit, combined with (b) lack of blocking between roof rafters. I believe that practically invites wind in, and on one concrete structure, the pressurization was so extreme, it broke the concrete. On our own house -- which has plywood soffit, but soffit vents -- the east side vents blew INTO the attic space and those on the west side blew out.

Bug!!! Yore a sight for sore eyes!! Really good to see you!! Well, I think any manner of bugaloo can only help ;o) We have a somewhat organized blobby on us right now, however my concern is that it will organize in a manner consistent with the CMC model.

Thanks SL!

y'alls be safe out there, y'hear? I'm gonna shut down for a while, as it's getting a tweak T&Lish. All good here so far, just much-needed rain. Pressure 1016 and rising. Rising? How can that be? Well it is lol

Hi Crab and Bride,

So happy to see you here from time to time again! Big Old Smile on my face!

Good to know that things are coming along nicely on your little isle paradise. Hopefully as they rebuilt and restore things will be built and restored even stronger this time and the damage will not be as great next time.
After Wilma blew down almost all our electrical poles, it really showed how bad they all were; some had cracks and some rotten etc. When they all got replaced they got replaced with stronger poles that should stand up to the next big blow. Our backyard fence now has center posts every 4' instead of every 6-8'... and learned a lot about what trees to get rid of and which to keep! These storms do teach us a lot once we go thru one.

I enjoyed your prev blog of the supplies that were the most valued and which you really did not need. Wilma taught us that lesson also. LOL

Oh well, I am rambling again.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Hi Homegirl! yep. The new Brazilian strain, plus a as-yet unidentified flu or flu-like virus in China. Not enough info on the China one as yet to post a link to.

Hey Ogal! Yep, I'm concerned about a possible reemergence in fall as well. That seems to be the pattern. Thus far, although there has been loss of life, H1N1 doesn't seem to be acting much differently than regular seasonal flu, with the exception that it has taken young, healthy people.

Heya Emms! Good to see you too! Maybe you should stow away aboard that journey here ;o)

No cartoon scheduled as yet Amy, (which is better than "soon come", right? lol) I think a political cartoon is in order. Trouble is, politics isn't really very........ funny

Hi dere Auburn! thanks for stoppin' by ;o) Good to see you too bud

Hiya Foxx! I beleive that most of the island has power, with the exception of a couple of places by the hotels. Still have a few power lines down on the side of the road atop the bluff, however power has been restored there as well. We're comin' along. Actually really great progress considering our isolation and dinky population. The Big Island has really come through for us -- many workers still here. Earthshine to you ;o)

Thanks for that link LowerCal! I really liked the genome links. I'm not tucking my tinfoil hat away just yet though ;o)

Hiya OBop! Good to see you too!

Heya Wabbit! Yep, and I think that's a reasonable concern as well.

That's a very sad story Cosmic. The worst is loosing the children.

Heya Doggie dear! I'd guess that you'll see more, however perhaps not all being tested, but extropolations for a group based upon a smaller sample. That's what appears to be happening globally. Not to infer that it's exponentially larger than reported, but I think the very mechanisms of sampling, processing and reporting probably leaves the actual stats very low as compared with actual.

Scubes! I will surely check them out! I was busy, but the main hangup was the inability to get a round-trip to LC, plus my budddy with the dive operation was working on his engine(s) that week. Looking forward to your photos ;o)

Thanks much SatXKat! That's just the kind of writeups that really pique one's curiousity.

Heya Rays!! Will do, m'friend ;o)

It's T&L-ing here, and a busy, busy day --

y'alls be safe and remember to laugh -- your body loves endorphines!

hey Crab...

My fear is that the H1N1 swine flu virus will combine with the H5N1 bird flu this summer... possibly causing a virus that is easily passed person to person and would be much more deadly...

It is interesting to see the swine flu hit the Southern Hemisphere flu season. It sure could be what might be instore for us this winter. I do think it will become more deadly and extremely contagious. I just wonder if those already infected will have built up some form of immunity to the winter strain.

Hello Crab family! Glad to see you back.

Plywood - and global spread is also growing. Part of the problem as I perceive it is that the CDC is far behind on the testing, so local practitioners are just sampling one or two from a group of people that are sick. Likewise for mortalities, so that somewhat skews the numbers.

Hey Emms! Glad you all got the Marina back together! We're making progress on this wee rock..... still at least 500 structures that are blacked in with watershield but roofs still being repaired. None of the hotels up and running yet. Many bluetops still seen.

Scubes, I'm so glad you had a great time! Hopefully there will be many many more. Yep, Brac Reef is coming along..... it's going to be at least a few months before they can reopen though. Looks strange, doesn't it. thank God that was a small, fast-moving storm. I'm still finding parts of roofs and such a coupla hundred yards behind our house.

Can't wait to see your photos bud!

Heya Gams! Well, I think we could all use a stormless season ;o) I worry about those in Central American and also Haiti/Dominican Republic the most...... seems like what would be a minor storm for most places causes terrible tragedy there.

Yep, St.Simmons.... I've been following the numbers. The overall reported mortality hasn't changed much (mortality vs. confirmed cases by percentage), but there's no doubt that H1N1 is spreading.

I guess this would be a bad time to mention the new virus that was confirmed coming out of China. Yep. Bad timing. I'll wait until there is more info.
