autumn in the Allegheny Mountains

Autumn color is at peak in the Allegheny Mountains of eastern West Virginia. Frosty mornings and shorter days are providing a dramatic display this year. The South Branch, Cass and Western Maryland scenic railroads are offering fall color tours if you wish to visit and experience fall on the East Coast.

Spring and summer in the Appalachians are all about the sounds- the riot of amorous birds, the evening concert provided by katydids and the constant drone of cicadas. But autumn is all about smell- the warm musk of leaves and the pleasant bite of wood smoke provide a backdrop for the scent of ripe apples from the many orchards in eastern West Virginia.

We will be traveling to State College, PA tomorrow and I hope to get some more fall foliage shots to share.
