How cold was December?

In Tampa December averaged 53.4 degrees which was not only more than 10 degrees below normal but was the coldest December ever since records began back in 1890! The very unusual cold was a result of the Arctic Oscillation (AO) which remained negative throughout the month and has continued negative into January.

The coldest and warmest temperatures in Tampa occurred within 3 days of each other from a low of 32 on the 28th to a high of 79 on New Year's Ever. In addition to the very cold weather, it was also very dry with only 0.52 inches of rain falling compared to the normal 2.30 inches. The windiest day occurred on the 18th with a peak sustained wind of 29 mph with gusts to 43mph out of the NW after a strong cold frontal passage.

In Lutz (just north of Tampa) the average temperature was 49.6 with the lowest temperature 25 and the highest 77. The December rainfall in Lutz was 0.59 inches.
