Andalucía Weather (El Tiempo)

Prolonged "wet" through the weekend, commencing today
Posted by: esteban9, 6:48 AM GMT on October 24, 2012 +0
An isolated cyclone off the Portuguese coast will finally move east over Iberia today. Although its upper level dynamics and jet streak are not strong, they are aimed directly at Andalucía. Because the cyclone is isolated from the main polar jet stream, it will be slow-moving. Combine this with an ample supply of moisture from the south, and the threat of heavy rain is definitely present.

Rain bands will move in with the initial front in the west today. AEMET has already hoisted a yellow alert for rain accumulation there. However, the heaviest and most widespread rain (area-wide) will be tomorrow, with an orange alert for the Málaga coast (80 mm accumulation over 12 hours). Thunderstorms are a good bet, especially in the afternoons. So be on the alert for flash flooding!

Precipitation will decrease but persist on Friday. Gradual improvement will ensue on Saturday.

Look out in the East for heavy rain on Saturday!

As if the last storm at the end of September weren't enough, it looks like the heaviest rain with the current storm will be in the same areas...eastern Andalucía and the Levante. The upper low is forecast to pinch off over northern Africa on Friday, moving slowly north over these areas on Saturday. This cold pocket aloft should tap some very moist and unstable air over the Mediterranean and trigger heavy rains on that day.

For Western Andalucía, rains will primarily fall tomorrow with the approaching cold front.

Next round of drenching rains
Posted by: esteban9, 3:37 PM GMT on October 16, 2012 +0
A vigorous cold front from the northwest will enter western Andalucía Thursday, and associated rain will persist through Friday in all parts of southern Iberia.

While this system does not have the appearance of a tropical moisture feed like the last flash-flood producing one (at the end of September), flood-prone areas should be on the lookout.

Anyway, prepare for the big wet followed by cooler temperatures and breezy winds over the weekend!
