Tues storms in Maryland

By: cws6196, 5:04 AM GMT on August 13, 2013

The threat of storms all day Tuesday is a real possibility. We have a warm front moving through our region from the south to the north while a cold front moves in from the OH valley. The interactions of these fronts will help to generate our storms. Also, as a result of the cold front we will see our temperatures go well below normal from Wed through the weekend, with temps only in the low to mid 70s during the day with some places feeling temps in the 50s at night.

TIMING: The rain and storms will move in early morning and linger through the day. There could be some breaks in the action during the afternoon hours. Any breaks in the precip could help to intensify afternoon storms. The longer period of clouds and rain, the less intense the afternoon storms could be.

THREATS: The main threat is heavy rain and flash flooding. Strong gusty winds are also an issue. Washington through Baltimore and up to the MD/PA line have the greatest risk for storms, but that doesn't mean S MD is out of it.

another day of possible storms for Maryland

By: cws6196, 5:46 PM GMT on August 09, 2013

Looks like the dynamics are shaping up to deliver us storms later this afternoon into the evening. The heating of the day, coupled with high dew points, along with an approaching cold front, are all nicely coming together.

TIMING: Later this afternoon, after 3:00pm through the overnight hours.

THREATS: These storms will be pop up scattered type storms. Heavy rain, possible flash flooding and strong gusty winds are the greatest threats.

As of this writing there are currently no watches or warnings. Follow me on Twitter (@wxmanmd) for updates and weather tidbits.

scattered storms in Maryland

By: cws6196, 8:12 PM GMT on August 08, 2013

Scattered storms are currently forming around the area, but it appears that any widespread storm activity won't happen. I see today, and tomorrow, having scattered pop up type storms in the afternoon and evening. The main threat from these storms is flash flooding and strong gusty winds. Saturday's forecast is somewhat "up in the air" (so to speak) as a cold front from Canada could be pushed into the area. For now, let's just say that through Friday evening there is a chance for scattered storms and I'll deal with Saturday later tomorrow.

Storms today in Maryland

By: cws6196, 6:48 PM GMT on August 03, 2013

Once again we have a strong cold front moving toward us from the Great Lakes. This seems to have been the pattern for us this summer. As that pattern continues we will continue to experience below normal temps, and looking into next week that will be true. But, since a cold front is moving in we have the chance for thunderstorms as the front nears. But, the longer the cloud cover remains, the less of a chance for severe storms we have. Right now it appears S MD has the better chance for stronger storms since the cloud cover has begun to dissipate some.

TIMING: Rain is already in central MD, but the bulk of any storms would be late afternoon through Sunday morning.

THREATS: For those who do experience thunderstorms (won't be everyone) the main threat will be gusty winds and lightning.
