Central MD Weather Conditions

Sat same as Fri
Posted by: cws6196, 1:07 PM GMT on June 30, 2012 +0
What a night. I hope everyone is well. There are many reports of wind damage to structures, trees and power outages. That storm system came to us from Chicago, maintaining its strength. Nature is amazing!

Today will be similar to yesterday. An excessive heat warning has been issued for today and storms are possible tonight (see below). Wind and hail will again be the threats. Expect storms after 6:00pm.

heat & storms Fri
Posted by: cws6196, 9:15 PM GMT on June 28, 2012 +0
Friday will be a hot one even though the temps will not cross 100, the dewpoints, or moisture in the air, will be high making it feel as if it were 105. If you are outside slow down and drink plenty of fluids.

The heat and an upper level disturbance will create some instability in the atmosphere allowing for storms to form. Any storms which do form will be scattered yet intense. Most (not all) storm activity, if it does happen, will be in Southern MD. If a storm is near you the main threat will be wind and hail. Keep an eye on the sky Fri afternoon/evening.

Maryland storms Monday
Posted by: cws6196, 3:16 PM GMT on June 25, 2012 +0
A cold front is again pushing into our area, and ahead of the front storms are building.

CONDITIONS: Strong to severe thunderstorms possible.

TIMING: Expect storms to begin after 2:00 pm today for Central and Southern MD, although S MD could see the worst of the storms

THREATS: Wind and large hail are the main threats, although an isolated tornado is not out of the question, mainly in Southern MD.

TS DEBBY: Debby is moving, ever so slowly, in the direction I thought she would yesterday. The NHC now has her moving across FL (sound familiar?) by the weekend. I am still watching her for any MD impact, but I do believe she will go out to sea after crossing FL.

I would not be surprised to see thunderstorm watches/warnings posted as the day progresses. I will keep you updated. Follow me daily on Twitter (@wxmanmd) and my Weather Phone will be updated as needed (443-470-9804).

Debby and Maryland
Posted by: cws6196, 3:26 PM GMT on June 24, 2012 +0
Talking about the tropics when our current temps are dropping doesn't seem to make sense, but it is hurricane season. Fortunately/unfortunately, "Chris" was a bust, so on to other storms. Let me reiterate my policy on posting about the tropics: I only post about those storms which I feel have the potential to impact MD. I don't talk about all the storms, hence why you didn't hear me talk about "Chris" even though I wanted to. ... But, if any of you are travelling to a hurricane prone area let me know and I will give you a forecast.

Ok, on to the latest tropical issue, Debby. I only bring her up due to a slight; very slight, chance she will impact MD. I know the official path from the NHC has her headed toward TX and LA, but I am respectfully disagreeing with that track. Actually, in their latest update, the NHC has moved the track further to the east, more in line with what I am thinking. I see Debby either crossing FL and running along the Atlantic, or entering land between LA and AL with a possible inland track to MD. This latter path would bring us much needed rain! Given climatology in the area, I see Debby intensifying to hurricane status, being picked up by the trough in the area, and crossing FL. The probable track at that point would be out to sea, but with a slight chance for her to ride up the east coast toward MD.

Bottom line: Watch to see if the NHC continues to move Debby's track further to the east, then watch for either landfall around LA/AL, or for her to cross FL into the Atlantic. I will be keeping an eye on this, but again, it is a "slight" chance for her to impact MD. "IF" she does impact MD it would be around next weekend or so.

Maryland storms Friday
Posted by: cws6196, 2:36 PM GMT on June 22, 2012 +0
It is still hot out there, especially coupling the temp with the dewpoints, giving us readings in the mid 90s, but the heat does not meet the criteria for heat advisories today. Nonetheless, be careful if you are working outside.

A cold front to our west will move into the area later this evening, dropping the temps and causing storms to form. This is not a major storm outbreak, but any thunderstorm has the potential for danger. These storms will pop up, so keep an eye on the sky. I expect storm activity to start after 2:00 pm. The main threat from these storms will be wind gusts. No tornado activity nor hail is expected.

Next week our temps drop to the low 80s and upper 70s with lower humidity. There is the potential for tropical development in the Gulf of Mexico. I am watching it as some models take it up the east coast. I will keep you posted. "Chris", in the Atlantic, has been downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm. See, even as a tropical system I make sure to keep people safe .....

Currently there are no watches/warnings issued. If they are issued I will keep you posted. Follow me daily on Twitter (@wxmanmd) and my Weather Phone will be updated as needed (443-470-9804).

heat coming to Maryland
Posted by: cws6196, 1:58 PM GMT on June 19, 2012 +0
For those looking forward to the official start of Summer (versus the unofficial starts of summer Memorial Day weekend and meteorologic summer on June 1), it will be here Wednesday at 7:09 pm. To help us get into the mood, Mother Nature is turning up the heat for us. Today will be much warmer than yesterday, but Wed through late Thursday will be quite hot! Temps those days will hover in the mid 90s, coupled with the high dewpoints, this will equate to a temps feel of close to 100+. Those near the water will find it "cooler" while those in the metro areas will feel warmer.

Thunderstorms are possible later this afternoon, and every afternoon this week through Sunday. Thursday afternoon is the best chance for storms due to the accumulated heating and an advancing cold front (don't think winter weather, just a slight drop in temps). It looks like the beginning of next week will be cooler.

A high pressure system spinning off the coast (clockwise) is pulling up southern heat and humidity. As the cold front advances later Thursday, the interaction of the heat, moisture and cooler temps aloft could trigger storms. More on that as the week progresses.

I would not be surprised to see the NWS issue heat advisories as the week progresses. I will let you know.

storm reports for Maryland
Posted by: cws6196, 2:08 PM GMT on June 02, 2012 +0
What a night! Central MD, DC, VA were hardest hit with only minor issues in Southern MD. Much tree damage and flooding issues. There were many reports of funnel clouds and tornado touchdowns, but until the NWS surveys the areas there is nothing for sure. But, it appears there was a tornado at BWI airport and in Falston. But again, until the NWS says as much, nothing is definite. Below are the preliminary storm reports for MD. I will keep you updated as to any confirmed tornadoes.

Strong storms in Maryland
Posted by: cws6196, 4:09 PM GMT on June 01, 2012 +0
original post
We are still on track for the storms I have been talking about. It seems all of the data plus all of the other meteorologists I routinely consult are all on board with the storms. This is not a time to panic, but a time to be vigilant, keep an eye on the sky, and know how to protect yourself. Here is a summary of the dynamics:

TIMING: The bulk of the storms will happen after 5:00pm lasting until at least midnight.

THREATS: Heavy rainfall, gusty winds, hail and possible isolated tornadoes. The Storm Prediction Center places MD's risks as such: 10% chance for tornadoes; 30% chance for damaging winds; 15% chance for hail.

CONCERN: My main concern is that the bulk of the storms, and any tornado formation, will most likely occur after the sun sets. The problem is it is very hard to see what is happening. Please make sure you have a weather radio and keep it on.

WATCHES/WARNINGS: As of this writing there are no watches/warnings issued. This will probably change. If a "watch" is issued that means conditions are in place for the incident to occur. If a "warning" is issued that means the incident is happening. I foresee the chance for thunderstorm and flood watches/warnings to be issued later today. If tornadoes do happen, a tornado warning will be issued for the impacted area.

DYNAMICS: As I write this a warm front is lifting north out of our area bringing in warm moist air. Later in the day a cold front will head toward us from the NW, bringing in cold air aloft and a change in the upper level winds. The shifting of the winds aids in the possible development of tornadoes (I am being overly simplistic due to space, but if you wish to learn more let me know). Storms will start in advance of the cold front, possibly becoming stronger as the front itself approaches, therefore, the setting of the sun and the cooling of the atmosphere will not necessarily cause the storms to die down.

UPDATES: I will post updates as needed later in the day.

HURRICANE SEASON: In the midst of all of this today, it is also the official start to the hurricane season. My policy is only to post and talk about hurricanes, tropical storms/depressions if they will impact MD. If you need a specific report to coincide with your travels, let me know.

Follow me on Twitter (@wxmanmd) for storm updates. My Weather Phone is updated and will be kept up to date as watches/warnings are issued (443-470-9804). Feel free to send me storm reports (wind, hail, damage, etc) and I will forward them to the NWS. If you have any questions leave them here or leave me a message on my Weather Phone.

Friday evening update
I know there are still storms in the metro Baltimore area, but phase 1 has ended and phase 2 storms are already stacking up. Phase 2 is blending with phase 1 for those in Baltimore, hence the flood warning. Phase 2 is another line of strong storms moving in from the west. There is a phase 3 line already formed further west of 2. So, even if the rain stops for a moment, the threats are not over. Phase 3 storms could be strong with damaging winds as they are forming closer to the actual cold front itself.

There have been at least 5 tornado reports I am aware of as well as waterspouts over the Chesapeake. I have seen many reports of flooding, hail and thunderstorm wind damage to trees and buildings.

Continue to follow me on Twitter (@wxmanmd) and send in your storm reports.
