Winter 2010-11
 By: crowe1, 8:01 PM GMT on December 21, 2010 +1
Well, winter officially began today with an extremely rare total lunar eclipse on a winter solstice full moon. Perhaps this portends plentiful powder?

With the official start to winter I thought I'd bring back the snow-counting from Lakeshadow on Sully's blog back in the "old days." As I recall, this is an old Iroquois (Onondaga?) method. The following is from LakeShadow's blog:

Snow Counting Rules:

How many snows will you get this year?

The calculation for snow-counting is as follows:

F + N = S ( F= First Snow Date of Month; N= Number of Days Since Previous New Moon; S= Snows For Winter)

Add the date of the month which you receive your first qualifying snow (see "What counts as a snow", below) to the number of days since the last new moon.

For example: Its forecast to snow on Oct 28th here in the Buffalo region. The last new moon was September 29th. It will be 30 days ago that there was a new moon from Oct 28th. add 30 (days since new moon) to 28(day of month) and you get 58. That is the number of snows that will be expected if the predicted snowfall happens.

What counts as a snow?
A snow is counted when there is enough of it to track an animal and it doesn't melt until the next sunrise or sunset. For example, if it starts to snow over night, it must cover and stick to the ground (grassy surface...not pavement) the next morning without melting for it to count. If it starts snowing during the daytime, it must still remain on the ground through sunset. This is easy to determine by watching for animal tracks or by putting a footprint in the snow once it stops snowing.

A new snow is counted when
a.) snow has melted between snows (after it has remained long enough to count in the first place) and surfaces are recovered to fit the snowfall criteria.

b.) Snow from the previous snowfall remains for the required time to be counted, new snow covers the footprints tracks left by animals and tracks stay covered through the following sunrise/sunset.

Many snows are too light to track an animal or melt away too quickly to be counted. So remember to take note...can you track an animal in the grass and has it stayed through the following sunrise/sunset.

If a snow is continuous through a few days without letting up through the following sunrise/sunset, it is only considered one snow. in other words, sometimes it snows for a few days and still counts as only one snow. On rarer occasions, two snows can be counted in one day. For example.. It may snow over night and stop before the sun rises, yet the snow remains on the ground past sunrise. Then the snow starts again in the afternoon while it is light and lets up before nightfall, covering all morning tracks and remaining on the ground through the following night. This counts as 2 snows for one day.

Thanks for visiting and participating!!! Keep us all posted on how you do with your corner of the world!!!

I thought this was fun so I'm doing it again. My first snow was Dec. 14, last new moon was 9 days before, so 14+9=23. I hope we come close:). As of 12/21/10 I'm at 2 snows.
3.) 12/23/10: .25"
4.) 12/26-27/10: C
5.) 1/4/11: .1"
6.) 1/7: c
7.) 1/7-1/8: 9.75"
8.) 1/12?: 5"
9.) 1/15: 5"
10.) 1/18: 5" (do I see a trend here?)
11.) 1/19: 2"
12.) 1/21: 4.2"
13.) 1/23: .3"
14.) 1/24-25: .5"

 151. Inyo 12:27 AM GMT on January 22, 2011 I'd be cranky too if I had to go through that!Stay warm, everyone! 11 degrees out right now and I have a feeling it may be a few days before I even see anything that 'warm' again. Member Since: September 3, 2002 Posts: 42 Comments: 834
 152. Inyo 12:30 AM GMT on January 22, 2011 Oops, I misread my thermometer, it is 17! So warm! Member Since: September 3, 2002 Posts: 42 Comments: 834
 153. listenerVT 4:40 AM GMT on January 22, 2011 Thanks, Inyo...I would be cranky too! Ally is such a sweetie.I'm looking forward to a photo of her new smile. :-)I'm also looking forward to the subzeros this weekend! We won't be having any visits from Black Widow Spiders this year, and we may be more healthy next Winter as this cold snap kills some germs. Yeah! Member Since: July 11, 2007 Posts: 0 Comments: 5011
 154. originalLT 5:38 AM GMT on January 22, 2011 Thanks for the Ally report, Listener. boy she is a tough little fighter! I'm glad they could save all her teeth, she's doing alot better than me in that respect! My little minor surgery went well, removing a pretty good size cyst from my left temple area, got 6 stitches, just alittle sore now. We got about 4.5" of snow here in Stamford CT. 157. listenerVT 11:16 PM GMT on January 23, 2011 Thanks, lazzy. :-)The colours on the forecast map kind of took me by surprise:The Concord, NH area is expecting clear skies. Colder with lows 10 to 15 below. Light and variable winds. Wind chill values as low as 30 below. They have a Wind Chill Warning. Up here in Vermont we are expecting clear skies and a frigid night. Patchy ice crystals after midnight. Near record lows around 27 below. Northwest winds around 10 mph until 10 PM...becoming light and variable. Wind chill in some places could flirt with -40. So we have a mere Wind Chill Advisory.=Stay snug, everyone!= Member Since: July 11, 2007 Posts: 0 Comments: 5011
 158. listenerVT 1:49 AM GMT on January 24, 2011 Update: Our Wind Chill Advisory has been dropped because our winds have dropped. We're still expecting record or near-record lows tonight.I sure hope the homefires are burning at your house. We set out extra food for the birds, and will not deter ANY creature, from deer to squirrel, who happens by for a snack tonight and in the morning. Hoping for no bears this year. Member Since: July 11, 2007 Posts: 0 Comments: 5011
 159. crowe1 2:17 AM GMT on January 24, 2011 Thanks Listener! You can bet that fire is stoked! We at -4 and still have a steady, bitter wind at 10-15 making it a cold -20 to -25. I even put up some foam insulation board for the chickens!Keep warm yourself:) Member Since: January 26, 2007 Posts: 15 Comments: 914
 160. listenerVT 7:25 AM GMT on January 24, 2011 It's about -22 here so far. The house occasionally pops at the timbers from the effect of the cold. We are reasonably snug however, with the stove going strong and solid window and door. I can't help but find this weather a little exciting. It is a necessary stinging salve. I may not like such deep cold, and I shiver thinking of the birds and beasts and homeless ones bearing it full on. Yet I welcome this passage of Winter. 161. listenerVT 7:36 AM GMT on January 24, 2011 At the top of Mount Washington in NH right now the temp is -33, with winds pushing 100mph, and a windchill of -83. Awesome! Member Since: July 11, 2007 Posts: 0 Comments: 5011
 162. crowe1 11:42 AM GMT on January 24, 2011 I can't compare to Mt. Washington but here, my own arctic is -20 now. After the wind died aroud 12:45am the temp dropped fast. That is not fun to see, "Temps droppeing from -8." Isn't -8 cold enough? Member Since: January 26, 2007 Posts: 15 Comments: 914

I'll bet Tabitha was tickled! Your kitty in the snow photo totally rocks, too!! 167. listenerVT 12:50 AM GMT on January 25, 2011 * * * ♥ Ally Update! ♥ * * *Monday, January 24, 2011 6:44 PM, ESTAlly is doing great!  She woke up on Saturday morning and returned to her normal self.  We gave her some regular Tylenol just a couple of times that day, and has not needed any sense.  She is easing her way back into crunchy foods, and as a special treat we went to the Olive Garden for dinner tonight.  She LOVES the cheese they put on everything!  She even got a second helping of cheese on her pasta tonight.Ally only has 2 days of preschool this week, and then, on Sunday Daddy and Ally head to New York for round four of 3f8.We would like to say a special thank you to Ally’s Mommy’s side of the family. Their generous gift help offset the cost of this surgery, as we don't have dental insurance.  Thank you so much.  Ally's teeth and our peace of mind are indebted to you until the Tooth Fairy comes (which someone told Ally brings you \$50 a tooth....WHAT?) 168. listenerVT 1:14 AM GMT on January 25, 2011 Last night we had -22.8 ... Nippy!Presently we're at -8.3 and falling.I don't know why, but weather like this excites me. :-)Snowmog...I haven't heard of any special requests from Miss Ally for her birthday (which is the 30th). She will actually be spending it in NYC and likely in pain from the 3f8 treatments. So they're going to do a little cake this weekend, then a big party with little friends when she gets home and settled in.*** Update on 2/26: Ally hasn't asked for anything in particular, but we hear she doesn't need books. And at least she only travels to NYC on her birthday. The painful treatments don't start until the next day. Member Since: July 11, 2007 Posts: 0 Comments: 5011
 169. Inyo 11:35 PM GMT on January 25, 2011 The cold does seem to have a purifying/cleansing aspect to it, doesn't it?It got down to around -20 in Middlebury where I was that night. My thermometer right at my window near the lake in Burlington read -15 but it reads a bit warm during cold snaps due to proximity to the window. So it probably got near -20 right down to the lake! It's still mostly unfrozen though. I guess it sure would take an intense cold to freeze the center of the lake, and I guess a milder summer too.The fire story really hit home also. A place my friend was renting had a small house fire. Thankfully no one was home, no pets, the only living things that died were a few houseplants (temperatures hot enough to melt plastic, THEN -20 after the heat was turned off! Not many plants could survive that)... The place wasn't leveled but lots of smoke damage and we had to go through the ashes and move the non-destroyed items to a storage unit. Needless to say that home will be uninhabitable for a while.Anyway, looks like fairly uneventful weather for the next week, but that's ok. It'll be cold though! Stay warm everyone. 177. crowe1 12:49 PM GMT on January 26, 2011 HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALLY!!! Let's hope the rest are filled with fun!Nice pics Listener. That hawk(?) looks like it's unhappy about having its photo taken. We managed -21.7F the other day. It was -19 when I walked up to wait for the bus with Katie (my 11 yr old). I had her wrapped tight, old fur coat, blankets, etc. After first telling me I was mean for making her go to school, she came around and saw it as an adventure.Looks like a miss on this storm for us Listener. At least or friends in MA, CT get some. I don't want wet snow anyway. I'd rather keep the cold so the 14-16" on the ground stays nice and fluffy. A few inches are possible from a clipper on Sat. Tomorrow we will celebrate Ally's birthday with a cake, some gifts and a visit to a friend's house (mommy and daddy's friend...but whose keeping track? At least they have a brand new baby to entertain Ally!).Someone from the New York office called. It turns out they are "overbooked" for 3f8 next week. This means Ally is on the afternoon schedule. It should start around noon, instead of 8:00. We are not sure what this will mean, as, in the past Ally would kind of snap out if it around 5 or 6, just in time for dinner. Daddy is confident he will figure it out. Thankfully, Auntie Kelly will be joining him half way through the week! The injections we have to give Ally are causing her huge welts at the injection site. We have to give her Benadryl every 4 hours to keep them under control. She has been very sleepy the past couple of days. Luckily they are not bothering her too much. That's about it for now. I will update at some point on Monday or Tuesday.PS: Ally does not like the word "Awesome", she prefers "Radical". Member Since: July 11, 2007 Posts: 0 Comments: 5011
