I like being outside. I do not like cold weather, wind, clouds (except for a few small ones here and there,) and fog.

May all happiness be yours,
Your troubles fade away,
And only gladness reign within
Your heart, this Easter Day.

We are finally getting two days of fine weather, sun and some heat, but the humidity is rising, so by Thursday they are saying 75 degrees but with 99% humidity! Phew!
I think I will come and visit you on your Paradise Island!
Have a good end of June:) lol
Happy End of June to you too, :-)
Hope it is a good day for you :)
I went to Henley on Thames yesterday with a group of photographers. I was a lovely day, lots of great cloud formations and boats of every size, including this lovely old steam boat!
Hi Mike - Wishing you a very happy and weather safe month!
Wishing you White Rabbits, White Rabbits, White Rabbits
and a FUN and SAFE month of September!
What's up Mike?
This phrase over in Flickr sounded to end with a *sigh* .
I am coming on slowly, but must remember to take it easy, especially if I want to heal well.... so I am being lazy, but it doesn't come easily to me!
Take care, my regards to you both.
Have a great Sunday, when you get there:)
Wishing you both a very Happy Thanksgiving :-)
I see you pop up once in a while but I can't figure out where you live now!! So, where do you live?
Yes, I can see how you could be confused. I decided to stop blogging about and posting photos from here after repeatedly experiencing negative events here. After becoming interested/concerned about the climate change issue, decided to devote my blog, primarily, to that.
I would love to move to Southern California (Palm Springs area, and where I had wanted to go in the first place,) but not so easy to just get up and move, especially from here to there and across the ocean. And my partner likes it here and doesn't want to try and move currently.
Maybe one day...great to hear from you! Thank you for stopping by, and maybe one day I will be back there in sunny California!!

Have I ever told you that my brother lives in Indian Wells? You'd probably see more sun there than here. We've had a lot of fog and cloud cover the last few days. It was quite warm inland, but the coast, especially over the Thanksgiving holiday, was quite foggy.
Now we are expecting rain. Down here, not so much, but up north - a lot! Sacramento could get over 5" while we might only see .5". We should see some high tides and swell from this storm though. Might be time to take the camera down to the beach to see what I can capture!
I'm with you on the climate change issue. I've seen numerous shows lately (mostly on PBS) that say that it's time we admit there is such a phenomenon. Whether you believe it or not, how can you NOT think that man hasn't contributed to something!!
I saw today's headline and read about the second round of rain for Northern California. Amazing that there is a flood advisory for the Navarro river when it is currently 20' below flood level. I use to enjoy driving along there when I would go out to the Mendocino coast.
Have fun watching/photoing the big waves if they come your way!!
It will be interesting to see what and what doesn't happen at the UN Climate Change Conference in Doha.
Love that Hatteras pic with the sea oats.
Hankerin' for the mainland? But not SF?
I've read that Twain quote before. He certainly had a way with words, didn't he? Not always nice and not always PC. Still funny as heck, though.
Yes, that was a wonderful warm day there at Hatteras. I don't know if those beautiful dunes and sea oats are even there anymore as I think they have had several big storm surge events along there since I was last there.
Yes, would prefer SoCal but SF would be ok. If I were 20 years younger and could stand the weather, Portland might be a fun place to be. Speaking of PC, do you ever watch the tv show Portlandia? I enjoy it.
Mark Twain and Oscar Wilde both had some funny quotes and observations. I guess you could say they were "contemporaries" and creatures of the 19th century. Their wit, however, has stood the test of time, hasn't it?
May the spirit of Christmas bring you peace,
The gladness of Christmas give you hope,
The warmth of Christmas grant you love.
~Author Unknown
For sure, Mike.
I never tire of Twain. I haven't read that much Wilde. Might check the library the next time I go.

(I remember, Bug, that our acquired tastes for quirky TV comedy shows has crossed paths in the past, such as the "The Red Green Show". This is the link for Portlandia. Not sure if you will like it...maybe more of a "West Coast" thang.

We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential.
~ Ellen Goodman
Wishing the two of you a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!
Another memory bump: the writer, named Kane, reminded me of Herb Caen, whose work I always loved. Time for a little walk down memory lane, maybe.
BTW, I stopped by on your blog early this morning and read about the Uranium story in Virginia. I had no idea that was there either. Being a former Washingtonian (DC) as well I found that very interesting and somewhat alarming as I also have family downstream from it. Will have to make it a habit to visit your blog. You are a very good journalist. Sorry not to leave a comment there...it was very early and I was multi-tasking and trying to wake up.
Awake yet?
How's things in Paradise?
About a cup of Joe down, takes about two to really wake me up. Doing my morning ritual of taking in information. I prefer the internet rather than having it blasted out at me by the tv. Democracy Now! isn't on on Sunday anyway and I don't need to see the latest news according to Corporate America, necessarily. I think I am turning into my late father, frightening thought. Although, he would be watching Rush Limbaugh, even more frightening thought, lol. RIP Dad, Love you. I feel his presence often. We bought a convertible this past summer and sometimes I sense him sitting there next to me in the passenger seat for a few minutes while driving. He loved warm weather (Florida) and convertibles :-). This is getting a little Jack Kerouac now, lol.
We have a chance for some rain in the next 24 hours possibly. Very dry where I am on the desert side of Paradise. Would be nice to get some here. Looks like the north west islands of Kauai and Oahu have a flash flood watch.
How are things were you are? Saw a big swirl that didn't look good on my screensaver map heading towards Sandi and again looking at the Doc's blog. Looks rather nasty and ominous. Was going to go over and look at Sandi's maps and weather links or see if she commented on it. Looks like it is closer to Iceland now. Reminds me of when you fly over to Europe and they have the route map with the plane icon as it travels up from the coast of Newfoundland to Iceland and on to the British Isles. Looks like it is dinner time in London. It's breakfast time here. G just announced that eggs (egg whites for me) are ready but I will have to eat them later because I am juicing this morning. Better to do it on an empty stomach.
I had one of those moments one day about 12 or 15 years ago with the woman I used to ride to work with. We'd just dropped her son off at the high school, were watching him walk to his wing and were musing about the disreputable clothing that his generation preferred and shaking our heads in disgust.
We both stopped, looked at each other in horror and exclaimed, "DEAR GOD, WE'VE TURNED INTO OUR MOTHERS!" We then collapsed in laughter, remembering how we horrified our parents with our hair and clothing at the same age.
BTW, her kid turned out alright. Spent 4 years in Army paratroop, married and now has 2 children of his own.
As I dropped into your blog I saw your first entry about SF becoming a Zero Waste City. We just saw that on PBS last night. I think that's great. Our trash and waste are going to get the best of us. There is so much we can do to recycle or reuse, but it does take more time, and no one seems to want to take that time anymore. I don't know where they are going so fast, it just makes the end come more quickly ;-)~~~
Yes, especially there in California, everyone is often in a mad manic rush. Not so much here, a slower more sane pace. While I am being haunted by my father this morning, I remember what a fuss he would make for having to throw an aluminum can into the recycle bin! He must be turning over in his grave, if he had one, of having to compost, lol.
Our community has trash bins, so we personally don't have a trash and recycle receptacle, but we do it on our own. We recycle soooo much. Empty cereal boxes, tin cans, milk containers, plastic,, glass, laundry containers, junk mail. We do the usual aluminum, plastic and glass for cash too, but oh so much more.
We generally take a trip a month to our center, completely filling up the back of our Outback ( seats down).
Just think, not all that long ago, it all would have gone in the trash. :)
I suddenly realised I hadn't been to your blog for months, the reason being you had been removed from my favourites, somehow!
Chatting to you over in Flickr meant I didn't miss you, but suddenly saw you in the main blog list, which I don't usually look at, and realised, when I saw your name, that you had vanished form my favourites list.
So here is a very short note to say .... "HI, Mike!"
We recycle most things here from lightbulbs and batteries through to plastics, fabrics, cardboard, wood and all waste garden and food products. The council collect everything from the curb side and will also come to collect old white goods and furniture! The amount going to landfill is now less than 20% the total thrown away.
I even recycle old photos! :-)
Seriously, 20% is a reasonable rate that most places should be able to achieve. Zero is exceptional!!
Oh, EDIT - it is one of Feather's photos.
I love how she gets those perspectives. As I mentioned, Feather has a wonderful 'signature style' with her photography. I watched her get those amazing shots when I use to walk around with her occasionally out there on that gorgeous coast back when I lived a couple hours inland from there. I miss hiking out there with her. It was fun. My mother and I even had a 'Blair Witch' experience with Feather one time hiking around Glass Beach. My mother and I still laugh about it sometimes when we recall it.
Hope all is going well with your Jury Duty. Will pop over to your blog and see what up. Not much new to report from over here. G got a nice photo of one the Java Sparrows at our feeder. Maybe I will post it for him. I am still trying to get a shot of one the 'Apapane 'Apapane photos and song on YouTube I think they are too elusive for the iPhone camera. Probably will have to dust off the better camera for a serious effort at it.
PS...Whilst scrolling through the blogs I have to give the best blog entry title award of the day to plapman, "Just posting to complain", LOL...omg, 0F! there on the Canadian Plains right now.
Recycling is not mandatory here and a lot of people are lazy and can't be bothered.
Like today at work. I watched a girl empty a plastic container of coffee creamer, put the top on and throw it in the trash. She had to pass the sink (rinse it out, please) to get to the trash. The recycling bin was one foot further on.
Years ago, when we first started recycling office paper, I asked her why she threw her paper into her trash can. She flat out told me that, until she was told she HAD to, she couldn't be bothered.
They do now require us to put anything with patient info in recycling but I still see lots of other paper just thrown in the trash.
BTW, after she left the break room, I dug into the trash, retrieved the plastic bottle she threw out, rinsed it and put it in the recycling bin.
I have been caught, more than once, grubbing in the trash and retrieving recyclables. They think I'm insane.
This is despite the fact that we have a BIG push to recycle as much as we can, campus-wide. We have an entire department devoted to it, as well as some very good webpages on our website. MUSC Sustainability
We also vermipost as much as possible from the cafes and cafeterias around the campus.
We participate in an annual school recycling contest. I forget the name of it now but it is a nationwide thing with colleges and universities.
Now that's going to bug me until I remember what it's called.
Oh, it's the Recyclemania Tournament but I don't see us listed this year.
Poot!
Yes, that is very good when a big institution has a strong recycling program as well. Sounds like some of your co-workers need to be sent to the re-education camps.
Big universities/companies, etc in communities that don't mandate recycling probably help keep a lot of recyclable material out of the landfills. I am sort of surprised that it isn't mandated in places like where you and Karen live. Maybe that is not uncommon. I have always lived for the most part where it is at least expected of you to recycle. San Francisco is tough. I remember getting notes in the recycle can or vice versa in the green waste or trash can if something accidentally or absentmindedly ended up in the wrong container. It was sort of unnerving like finding a note in your baggage from the TSA.
I was trying to analyze what our personal percentage of recycling/composting versus what goes into the landfill myself recently. I think we may be at about 25%. We have had problems composting the paper towels and paper plates. We use a lot of them as we are in a water scarce place. We have to be careful with water too. I have been trying to get G to switch over to xeriscaping.
I read that Karen doesn't use a lot of paper towels and uses reusable towels. But I wonder how much energy is used to clean them? I guess if you are using solar or wind energy then probably not contributing to more fossil fuel being burned up to operate your washing machine. But even so, producing the paper products may be very polluting. I remember when we would approach the paper mills in the far north of California how awful the air quality and smell was.
I don't know if it is still there or not. I doubt it but if it is, they must have those thingies (I can't be bothered to remember what they're called) that capture the emissions... Emission control devices?....
Whatever, there's no odor up that way these days.
Yep, that's me.... practicing for the days when I become a bag lady, grubbing in the trash.
Most of the horrified looks are because I'm putting my hands in there. My retort: That's what soap and water are for!
They won't pick up anything that bounces off the trash can and hits the floor, either. They might pick up a germ. Heaven forbid! I have the same retort for that: Soap and water!
The one I usually keep to myself is, "You don't get to be our age without having put your hands in, and on, some pretty nasty things and you're still alive, aren't you?"
Then, there's the other cop out, as to why they don't pick things up off the floor: It's not my job.
