Great catching up on Flickr yesterday, and yes, Peter is a scream ....... :)))
I wish I literally could go for a visit! It's a beautiful place...I use to enjoy visiting there when I lived nearby.
Yes, Peter is a scream!!! Very funny :))) Some of your other Flickr "fans" are quite witty/amusing as well and you even have a "paramour" (so to speak) LOL
And yes, it was great to catch up. I enjoyed your restoration photos (and learning how you did it w/out scanning!) I am in the midst of restoring an old VHS movie I shot in 1987 to .avi format. I have successfully uploaded it to youtube and am going to see if I can post some of it to my flickr next. Flickr only allows videos of up to 90 seconds each so maybe some highlight segments. My little movie is almost 14 minutes. Fortunately, youtube now has an editor on their website and I am trying to experiment with it next. I also need to try your method of restoring old photos and see how that works for me. The scanning of the old negatives, as I mentioned, can get quite tedious as they have be lined up just perfectly.
Watcha say?
Peter excelled himself on this image!! He is hilarious!!!
Been doing a bit of browsing around about Hawaiian pigdin. I notice that the grammer, verb tenses, sentence structure etc. are comparable to SC/GA Sea Island Gullah or Louisiana Creole.
I wonder if its the same for all pigdin, worldwide? Basic words and concepts of the foreign and native languages are kept but grammar, verb tense, etc, get tossed out in favor of simplicity and ease of communication. You have to know the context of what is being talked about to get the right connotation.
Hawaii has a right mish-mash of languages; even more so than the Mainland: the various European languages, the different Polynesian languages, Chinese, Japanese and who knows what all else? Chinese, in particular has so many different dialects to start off with, depending on where in China people immigrated from.
I am going to start reading e-books on Kindle...I wonder if I will do the same thing with them too? I have books that I only had less than a chapter left to finish...maybe a 'Gemini' thing. Guy makes fun of my unfinished book collection...he reads them through thoroughly.
Interesting that your research has come up with those similarities. That is a good question about it being a worldwide pattern...maybe so as much of the world was under colonial rule during previous centuries by English, French, Dutch, Portuguese and Spanish Speakers. I wonder how it differs between the Anglo-Saxon and Latin pidgin? Yes, Hawaii has influence from all corners...you see it in the food here too (and the people.)
Saw this tweet on a local news website today about an alleged bank robbery..."Had one guy who made small kine joke threats so they (First Hawaiian Bank) shut down as a precaution. They open now. Dummy" I guess a small kine example...
I have a couch :)
I will keep that in mind (and likewise, I have a couch, too :)
If anyone ever needs a virtual trip to the Mendocino Coast it is a first class experience on Feather3's gallery
(From Feather3's gallery)
Thanks, Mike...I have kept that in mind. It will be a while before I can actually get to Hawai'i, but it hasn't been removed from my bucket list :)
Hi Mike - Wishing you White Rabbits x 3 and a Very Happy Halloween Month:)
