Some Warming Coming to Mid Michigan

By: chatcat, 2:23 PM GMT on January 29, 2014

Yesterday we had plenty of sun but it didn't do much to suppress the bitter cold temperatures. At least it was pleasant to look at out the window. We remain under a wind chill advisory but temps should start warming up today and reach the mid 20s the remainder of the week. We can expect this to continue through the weekend.

I found this winter prediction map online that was posted by NOAA last August and all I could do was laugh. They couldn't have been more wrong. So much for long range forecasts. So much for global warming. As motorists in the south are struggling to get where they're gong, I'm sure that they wish that this prediction were true. As for us, we have our share of accidents too because of snow covered roads and it it too cold for the road salt to really be effective. Forecasts for next week are predicting that highs will once again only be in the teens and I'm hoping they are wrong. Everyone is really getting annoyed with this frigid air. Propane gas companies are raising prices to ridiculous levels and I saw on the News where one man was charged $2200 to fill his tank ($5.49 per gallon). Maybe it's time to consider getting a wood stove.
Right now (9:15 AM EST), our temp is 5.4°F, the humidity is 51% and skies are are mostly cloudy. The dew point is 0°F and winds are from the WSW at 5 mph. The pressure is 30.02 inches and rising. The wind chill is -5°F and visibility is 4 miles. Yesterday's high was 9°F and the low was -7°F. The record high is 58°F set in 2013 and the record low is -11°F set in 1966. Normals are 30°F / 15°F.

OUR FORECAST:
Today: Scattered snow showers, mainly before 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 17. Wind chill values as low as -14. Breezy, with a west southwest wind 18 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Extreme Cold Moves Into Mid MIchigan

By: chatcat, 2:54 PM GMT on January 21, 2014

Looking outdoors this morning seems much warmer than what it is. There are hardly any clouds and the sun is shining brightly. But in spite of that, our 9:30 AM temp is only 0.7F. I always feel sorry for people having to work outdoors in this type of weather and am happy that I'm not one of them. What's worse is that these frigid temps are expected to last well into next week. I have never longed for Spring as much as I have this year, and I'm hoping that my perennial plants can withstand this winter. It has certainly been brutal.
Right now (9:45 AM EST), our temp is 1F, the humidity is 39% and we received about 0.25 inches of new snow yesterday. Our snow cover is about 6 inches. Winds are from the NNE at 8 mph and the pressure is 30.18 inches and steady. The wind chill is -12F and the dew point is -7F.

OUR FORECAST:

Today: Wind Chill Advisory. Flurries likely after 1pm. Mostly sunny and cold, with a high near 7F. Wind chill values as low as -12F. North northwest wind around 9 mph.

Tonight: Scattered flurries. Partly cloudy, with a low around -6F. Wind chill values as low as -17F. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph.

Wednesday: Snow showers likely, mainly after 2pm. Cloudy, with a high near 12F. Wind chill values as low as -18F. South wind 6 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Wednesday Night: Snow showers likely. Cloudy, with a low around 2F. Wind chill values as low as -15F. South southwest wind 6 to 11 mph becoming north after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Thursday: A chance of snow showers. Partly sunny and cold, with a high near 10. Blustery, with a northwest wind 14 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around -7.

Friday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 16. Breezy.

Warm Temps, Rain in the Forecast For Mid Michigan

By: chatcat, 2:13 PM GMT on January 10, 2014

We had a little snow this morning but not enough to add to our snow cover depth. But today should see a substantial decrease in the white stuff as significantly warmer temps move into the state. We have a little over 16 inches at this time and much of that will be gone over the next few days. Unfortunately, moderate to heavy rain is in the forecast for tomorrow and with the frozen ground, that won't be a good thing. Some forecasts are calling for as much as a half an inch by tomorrow night. This is not happy news for the winter sports enthusiasts in our area.
Right now (9 AM EST), our temp is 28.2F, the humidity is 80% and skies are cloudy. The dew point is 27F and winds are from the south at 4 mph. The pressure is 30.14" and steady. Yesterday's high was 23F which happened just before midnight, and the low was -21F early yesterday morning. Temps were on the rise all day. Our record high for Jan 9 is 56F set back in 1950, and the record low (until yesterday) was -14F set back in 1984.
