Shore: Thank you for stopping and leaving a note. I saw that you had a busy time around Christmas with travels and tales to tell. Very nice!

No, I did not do Wiry. I need to actually learn to do some welding. Perhaps that can be one of my 2012 goals!

Thanks also for the comments on "Running Back to the Herd". Once in awhile, the camera goes off at just the right instant!

Gosh, I wouldn't know what to recommend for your reading list. My latest have been How To Disassemble a Gateway MA7 NX57X Laptop and the Acer easyStore H340 Service Manual. They seemed to follow a pretty similar, and technical, plot-line, though, and are not for everyone! (Side note to me: Add, read an actual book to the 2012 resolutions.) ... That's gonna be a tough one!

And yes, regarding 'The Sky is Falling ... The Sky is Falling', I think I'll let the talking heads and other fear mongers and followers use their time to hash through that one.

Thanks for the Happy New Year greetings! And, "Happy New Year" back to you!

Happy New Year to you all! Especially to that new cat who's taken up residence on the place - I believe the name is Wiry. ;) That really is a wonderful sculpture - did you do it?

I like the photo "running back to the herd", too. The flying mane and tail are beautifully captured - such a sense of movement.

I'm filling up my list with resolutions. Some will be easy to keep (pay no attention to Mayan calendar hysteria) while others will take a little more effort (keep up with emails and for gosh sakes, when you stop by a blog, leave a danged comment!)

The one that seems the most fun is a commitment to read a new book every week. Have any recommendations?

I'm really looking forward to this year. It feels spacious - though I'm sure it will fill itself up with this and that soon enough. I hope yours is wonderful - and that you get the snows you need!

seflagamma, juslivn, Blizzard92, dragonflyF15, msmontana: Thank you all for the Christmas greetings!

calpoppy: Right. No big snow. We had 8" in a quick early season snowfall, but that only lasted about two days. Just a trace again lately with mild temperatures and even some rainfall. Not a real winter at all so far! And, Orpheus has received even more carrots!

Looks like you haven't gotten a big snow yet. Though I would imagine you might be happy with that! I managed to stay upright on my hike today and yesterday also, I am on a roll!! Course there is no ice right now to cause me any problems :) In Kodiak where my son is, ice is everywhere so wearing Yak tracks is essential to remaining upright.

Please give a carrot to Orpheus from me, he is one beautiful horse!

Hello Dan,

I did make it back before Christmas!!!!

From our Home to Yours
Merry Christmas and a Healthy & Happy New Year 2012!

"And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow,
stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons.
It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags.
And he puzzled and puzzled, till his puzzler was sore.
Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn%u2019t before.
What if Christmas, he thought, doesn%u2019t come from a store.
What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more."

- Dr. Seuss

GardenGrrl: Thank you!

The mellow Fall of 2011 is making a mild transition to winter this week. Even though I have measured a total of 19.1" of snowfall for this season, there is just a trace on the ground today! Yesterday it was above 40 degrees!

Cute image! Right you are, time to shop (here: eBay, Amazon, Buy.com, Tiger Direct!; no city shopping for me!).

Hi Dan,

Been a while since I have posted here. Your ranch is just beauitful and I also love the photo of the Flag on Pearl Harbor Day.

You live in such a beautiful place.
Thanks for taking us there thru your photos!

If I don't get back before Dec 25th,
You have a very Merry Christmas!

It seems the time passes particularly fast during this time of the year.

Thank you, the location continues to provide photo opportunities!

Holiday greetings back to you!

I need to catch up on my photo processing and posting and browse through some blogs here too before the season becomes history!

Cool eagle shot! They come down here in the winter, so usually in January I will get out to do some eagle watching...which is also the coldest months! Hand and toe warmers!

Love the shot with the flag and big sky background :)

Thank you! I'm glad you like the photos. I thought about trying to get closer on the eagle photograph, but I was returning from my run and would have needed to crawl through some barbed wire and hike in a couple of hundred feet to get into a better position. I figured I would have frightened the eagles away by the time I did all of that.

Thank you! It is quite nice. Sometimes though, we do get the jake-braking rap from the logging trucks going down the hill as they head into town.

Wouldn't Montana look wonderful done in a video like this?

Yes it would! I should try that some time. Looks like it would take a bit of patience to set up at various locations. My "time-lapse" wx-cam is pretty interesting sometimes, but the location is, of course, static!

Scampy is a pretty smart one! He tends to be braver than the others and as a result gets photographed more often too!

I do realize that is a risk for the kittens. They have been hunting out in the pasture grass, and as such things are, other creatures have probably been watching them too.

I am GLAD that I live up on a rise with few trees for cover. My little Ming has been safely inside the house while I continue to unpack...

shore: The eagles are around all year. The day after I took the picture I posted one flew over me as I was doing chores out in the pasture. (Too high and fast for a photo).

As I remember, the box elder wood was more gnarly to split. (That was a different box elder ... the one featured in many photos is doing well!)

Well, now that summer is gone, I hope that some rain falls to eliminate the dry conditions you have been dealing with for the last year or more.

What an amazing sight - the eagles in the tree. Do they migrate, or hang around all winter? My guess is they stay.

I was in the Hill Country last weekend visiting friends. He doesnt' do much woodwork now, because of arthritis and other health problems, but he'd done some wooden bowls for gifts a couple of months ago. I didn't recognize the wood in one of them and asked about it. It was box elder! They'd had to take down one of their trees, and he put it to good use. It's very interesting wood - looks like a cross between burled walnut and spruce. Or something.

We've got our first frost this morning, with a dawn temperature of 31. Methinks summer is kaput!
