mid-week chill down

By: bawlf, 2:51 PM GMT on January 30, 2014

-19.5 C (33.8 F) at 7:46 PM with NW winds at 4.3 kmh. Sunrise 8:33 AM, sunset 5:14 PM. Waning crescent moon.

Daytime forecast: Abundant sunshine. High near -15C. Winds W at 10 to 15 kmh.

Overnight forecast: Partly cloudy skies early will give way to cloudy skies late. Low near -21C. Winds W at 15 to 30 kmh.

Still home from work recovering from surgery. Will be off for approximately six to eight weeks. Body has to 'relearn' certain functions. Went for groceries yesterday afternoon, it was a nice break from spending days at home. Also, washed the car as it seems we will be in a frozen state for a number of days.

Upon my return from groceries, at around 4:45 PM, Carlos and Simba were very excited with an air of being 'pent up.' I commenced to getting them dressed and proceeded to go for our daily walk. Carlos is still struggling with leash aggression and, as luck would have it, I had just let his leash out - to give him a bit more freedom when one of our neighbours with her Labradoodle 'Bella' came around the corner. Well Carlos freaked! He started barking, growling and lunging at Bella. I had to restrain and reel him in. It was like fighting a small Tuna fish in the Caribbean. Finally I got him beside me and Bella and her master passed by. Carlos certainly has a reputation, and by proxy Violet and myself, in this neighbourhood.

incremental warm up

By: bawlf, 2:19 PM GMT on January 28, 2014

-16.5 C (2.3 F) at 06:24 AM Sunrise 08:24 AM sunset 05:10 PM. Partly cloudy skies. High 1C. Winds W at 15 to 25 kmh.

Simba still needs to be dressed up with winter outdoor gear in these temperatures. When I mentioned going for a walk yesterday afternoon she immediately stood up and went into her crate as if she definitely did not want to go. Bundled her up and she was OK for the complete circuit.

Carlos still has too much energy after the circuit so we tend to drop Simba off and continue walking with him. He usually burns the whole walk and, I'm sure, he would completely walk us out - if given a chance. At any rate, he was napping and snoring throughout the evening.

crusty snow banks in Estates

By: bawlf, 2:10 PM GMT on January 23, 2014

-3.9 C (24.98 F) at 7:07 AM with 6.1 kmh SSW winds. Cloudy. Gusty winds this morning. High 5C. Winds WNW at 25 to 40 kmh. Looks like the winds will be shifting.

We have been getting spring-like freezing/thawing cycles for two weeks now. I'll take that anytime compared to the -23C to -30C temps that we would normally be experiencing in mid-January. My father lives ten months of the year in the Sebastian/Vero Beach Florida area. He's been saying they have really experienced a cold winter and he was worried for his Hibiscus flowers last night as there was a Freeze Warning. I checked the forecasted low for his area which was 3C. Possibly in low lying a freeze could occur but I think his flowers are safe.

Not able to walk Simba and Carlos, recovering from surgery, cannot report on conditions in the Estates. Violet is walking them and says they are sniffing and smelling even more than usual. Simba doesn't balk to go out like she does in colder weather. So the unusually warm temps are good for her health!

melting snow reveals dog business

By: bawlf, 12:44 PM GMT on January 19, 2014

-0.3 C (31.46 F) at 05:36 hrs with a 6.1 km/h W wind. Looking at a high of 3 C. Hopefully, it will be as sunny as yesterday, not a cloud in the sky all day! Just looked at the forecast: Abundant sunshine. Temps nearly steady in the mid 30s. Winds WNW at 20 to 30 mph.

Dogs and I went out about 2:30 PM in the sun dazzled roads. Snowmobilers still roaring on the open prairie. Lots of hardened crusty snow in the ditches. Simba loves all the smells as the snow melts in the Spring. One has to be very careful with the footsteps because of all the business resulting from delinquent owners not picking up after themselves.

Looks like more sun for today, yay!!

dogs have returned home

By: bawlf, 3:04 PM GMT on January 06, 2014

-17.8 C (- 0.04 F) at 7:56 AM. SSE winds at 17 kmh. There will be a low of -16 C for today!! This is what the weather station says; however, as you can see presently it is -17.8 C!! A 10% chance for precipitation with overcast skies.

Dogs have been at their dog sitters during our vacation to Costa Rica. Picked up Simba at her sitter on Thursday afternoon. Sitter was having his roof shovelled to remove the heavy accumulation of snow, his popcorn ceiling was cracking. Went to Edson Saturday to pick up Carlos from step sons. Hellish trip, couldn't do more than 80 kmh on the Yellowhead and met 10 vehicles in the ditch. Some drivers wouldn't even slow down after seeing this dangerous situation. On the way back there was 5 cars in the ditch. Even the semi trucks were driving quite slow during the night trip.

Edmonton has received twice the snowfall at this point of the winter than the average.
