An Auburn boy taken to the East Alabama Medical Center Thursday is the hospital’s first suspected case of the swine flu, or H1N1.

The boy was taken from a doctor’s office to the hospital after he tested positive for Type A influenza, H1N1’s category, EAMC spokesman John Atkinson said.

The hospital sent samples to the Alabama Department of Public Health for further testing to determine if it is H1N1, Atkinson said. He said it could be early next week before they received results.

Atkinson said he could not release the child’s age, the doctor’s office or the school he attended. He said the case, identified at approximately 5 p.m. Thursday, is no different from the more than 70 samples statewide sent to the ADPH.

The boy was hospitalized for slight dehydration, Atkinson said. He emphasized that it was still a suspected case, not probable nor confirmed.

Even before the boy was seen, EAMC imposed limitations on visitors, requesting only immediate family and no one younger than 13 visit patients. The policy will still be in place but is subject to change, Atkinson said.

Meanwhile, he recommended people wash their hands frequently, cover coughs and sneezes with an arm instead of hands and stay away from those who are ill.

“We would encourage people to do their own form of social distancing,” he said. “If you don’t have to be around other people for the next few days, have some family time at the house.”

Earlier Thursday, Opelika City Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Neighbors said a student in the school system had a virus but did not test positive for flu.

So far, H1N1 is “just the flu,” EAMC Infection Control Officer Benja Morgan said.

Symptoms appear to be the same as seasonal influenza. Unlike last fall’s wave, it responds to antiviral drugs, which can shorten the duration and severity, she said.

“It’s a more controllable virus than the one we just had,” she said. “We need to calm everybody down about this.”

Two probable cases of the swine flu have been reported in Madison County, where schools have been closed. The case of a hospitalized woman in LaGrange, Ga., was confirmed as swine flu Thursday.
The Alabama Department of Public Health had not confirmed any cases Thursday, spokeswoman Arrol Sheehan said.

The World Health Organization has raised its pandemic alert to 5 in preparation for a pandemic.

Could it be an angel?

By: auburn, 1:56 AM GMT on April 28, 2009

I need some help coming to peace with this.

While in Destin for the Dogwalk My Family was treated to an opportunity to go to the Gulf aquarium (was a blast...I dont enjoy that type thing mostly...cant handle the animals in captivity)this place is awesome...they really care for the Rehab animals that are there.
But anyway...while I was there..I saw this man and his wife(Very nice looking people)sitting below us in the bleachers...I felt drawn to them...so I went and introduced myself...they were great...from Tenn...he had this hand carved cane that was unreal...I told him it was unlike any I had see(I have seen a few...I shouldn't be walking...long story)at any rate he informed me that he was dying from liver failure and he didn't have much time left. When the show we were watching was over, the man and and his wife met me at the bottom of the bleachers and he insisted that I take his cane because he felt I would take care of it. Then they disappeared like they were never there.I dont know what to think.......I have a part of this person I dont even know their name

Hey all I stole this info from Code1s Blog cause when it comes to typing I am a real pecker...Good things happning with Portlight!!!!!!

Please see Codes blog for more Info

Sugarsand and I, as co-coordinators, along with the help of FWBLinda and BeachFoxx, are so very pleased to make a formal announcement that our Destin Portlight Disaster Relief/Dog Walk has been confirmed for April 26th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. CST!

Come one, come all, bring your dogs, donation $$, and join us in the fun at the beautiful HarborWalk Village in Destin, FL!

Photo courtesy Beachfoxx, in moving boat!
More photos to come soon, but if you look closely, you can see the famous Harry T's lighthouse here. Harry T's, and Angler's on the island (Okaloosa Island) restaurants are our most gracious local sponsors!

We've gone on a bit of a different route for our walk to include pets. Pet relief, during and after especially, hurricanes is near and dear to many all over the world. We have dedicated 25% of total proceeds in Destin to help fund the next hurricane disaster for those pets left behind, or in shelters in need of our help. This is a new addition to the great works Portlight already does, and something we living in cane alley, and the rest of the world feels strongly about.

For more direct info on the Destin Dog Walk, please contact SugarSand at Liz@portlight.org, or me, at Cindy@portlight.org

I know many of you have already pledged funds to help us in this. Much appreciated! We love our pets, and well know of the devastation caused, and need during a hurricane disaster living on the gorgeous Emerald Coast of FL! We sympathize with any area that takes a hit.

Many walks on tap already known, and many more in the planning stages

Please donate to the one, or all walks, that moves you to do so. We do not have a crystal ball to see where the next storm may hit. It's comforting to know that a true grass roots effort has the financial backing, and drive to be one of the first to show up, and sometimes one of the few to show up, without massive overhead! Goods and services to those in true need...often forgotten, often disabled, and in our venue walk.....for pet relief also.

If all ya look for is the Bad...you will never see the good!!!
