This is Not Cool: Murderers, Tyrants, and Madmen

Peter Sinclair, founder of the "Climate Denial Crock of the Week" video series, and regular contributor to the Yale Forum, has posted a new video, "This is Not Cool: Murderers, Tyrants, and Madmen." The video addresses Heartland's recent billboard "experiment," and invokes the words of Margaret Thatcher, Carl Sagan, Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates, James Hansen, Steven Chu, and Isaac Asimov, among others.

Peter writes on the Yale Forum,

"In a word-association game, it’s unlikely that many would bring up the names of Margaret Thatcher, or of Columbia University’s Wallace Broecker. Nor, for that matter, those of NASA scientist James Hansen; of the late biochemist and novelist Isaac Asimov; of theoretical physicist, author and cosmologist Stephen Hawking; of the late Cornell University astrophysicist and author Carl Sagan; of Microsoft’s Bill Gates; of Navy Admiral David Titley; or of Nobel Laureate, and now Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu.

Through an artful selection and piecing-together of some historical video and audio materials featuring each of those individuals expressing deep concerns about climate change, the video tees-off from a Heartland remark — defending its poster prank while at the same time ending the effort — that “the most prominent advocates of global warming are murderers, tyrants, and madmen.”

That billboard campaign, the first featuring Kaczynski, initially had been intended to include subsequent posters featuring Fidel Castro, Osama bin Laden, and one or two additional scalawags and scoundrels. Instead, it has led a number of large corporate funders to follow-up Heartland’s pulling of the plug with a pulling of the plug on their own part: A number of well-known corporate sponsors have announced they are ceasing their relationships with, and funding for, further Heartland efforts."

Angela,

Thanks again for keeping us informed about the fight to keep the "Denialists" on the defensive. They may be well funded, but we have science and honesty on our side. We have to keep spreading the word and showing the volumes of scientific data that keep showing the incontravertable evidence that AGW is continuing to create "Climate Chaos" on an ever quickening pace.

Keep up your good work!!

Lame. "denalists" are not that well funded compared to y'all. Do a proper research and always cite source. You're just making up "facts".

Typical liberals.

Wonderful News:

Joe Bast Announces the Death of Denial-a-Palooza at Final Heartland ICCC Conference

During his closing remarks at the Heartland Institute's Seventh "International Conference on Climate Change," Heartland President Joseph Bast revealed that the group has no plans to hold another conference and is struggling to pay its staff following the defections of corporate sponsors in the wake of the disastrous Unabomber billboard campaign and Deniergate document dump.

"I'm not a good fundraiser," Bast admitted to the crowd today in Chicago as the gathering wound down.

Bast appealed directly to the crowd for donations, saying that "if you've got a rich uncle" [ask him to donate to Heartland].

"At this point we have no plans to do another ICCC," Bast said, referring to the somewhat-annual gatherings which DeSmogBlog dubbed Denial-a-Palooza years ago.

Couldn't get the billboard to show up. The bike-boards are very similar..

It won't show either, maybe because even though it's anti-Heartland it's still kinda spam.. You can see it here.

Thought I'd pass this e-mail on here..

“You can’t criticize
corporations.”

That’s what media company Clear Channel told us when
we tried to run this billboard calling out corporate supporters of the Heartland
Institute like Pfizer, Comcast, and Microsoft.

So, Clear Channel was fine with Heartland’s
billboards equating belief in climate change with mass murder, but they aren’t
okay with an ad criticizing the corporations who fund Heartland’s
propaganda.

Luckily, we’ve found a green way to avoid
Clear Channel’s censorship, and hit Heartland where it hurts: bicycle
billboards!
We are teaming up with our partners at SumOfUs.org to put
our message on people-powered bikes — hugely visible moving ads that will circle
downtown Chicago starting today and continuing through Tuesday and Wednesday — the same days that Heartland is
holding their major climate change denial conference.

But we need your help to make this
happen.
The moving ads will cost more than $4,000. Please click
below to chip in $5 to fund these powerful, pedal-powered messages.

(Our partner SumOfUs.org is helping us to collect donations, so the link will
take you to a page on their web site.)

http://sumofus.org/campaigns/heartland-ad-ftf/?su b=ftf

The world media is in Chicago this week to cover the
NATO Summit, and many top environmental journalists are attending the Heartland
climate-denial conference — in large part because your efforts to end
Heartland’s corporate support has become a big story.
The Forecast the
Facts team is here too, and these billboards, along with our big public event on
Tuesday, are sure to generate even more coverage.

All of this attention is strengthening our campaign
to de-fund the Heartland Institute. Eleven corporations have already
dropped their support, and nearly half of Heartland’s expected 2012 corporate
funding has been eliminated.
But we won’t stop until we’ve completely
marginalized their extremism, and held them accountable for persistently denying
established climate science. These ads are another big step in making
that happen.

And if you need one more reason to chip in, imagine
this: the look on the faces of the Heartland conference attendees when they find
themselves encircled by bikes demanding that their corporate backers pull out
immediately! Please help make that possible by chipping in whatever you
can. Together, we can pressure the remaining Heartland holdouts, and
hold corporate supporters of climate change denial accountable.

Can you chip in $5 or $10 to help make our
people-powered ads possible?

Please explain why should I sacrifice my rights of free speech to appease Holocaust revisionists, racists and AGW Deniers? I attack their ideas, not their person, even though their attacks are vicious smears.

In tandem with this post is an interesting article in the London Guardian that would apply just as well to the US Congress as it does to the British Parliament. Called, Geeks Rise!, it is suggested that
we should have an Office of Scientific Responsibility to apply the "evidence or STFU" rule to Parliament. This wouldn't restrict the autonomy of ministers, but: "when science is cited to justify a policy, the OSR would audit it, naming and shaming those who bend it to their political advantage." The result would be a political cost for MPs who abuse evidence, and about a thousand angry blog posts by the likes of James Delingpole blithering on about climate conspiracies and wotnot."

Apparently the United States is not the only country that has problems with denialist nutjobs. WWII Holocaust deniers are publicly attacked and ridiculed (even outlawed in some countries), and rightly so, but the AGW deniers must bear the guilt of promoting a future holocaust 2-3 orders of magnitude larger.

The climate misinformation nation

The Berkley Blog has an interesting article comparing the overwhelming consensus among climate scientists to the lack of understanding in the American public.

My thanks for this.
Our provincial government is busy calling out:
"Business as usual!" and any questions will be met with all the latest products of the "think Tank". According to our Premier, Christy Clark, any crits of tar running into the Pacific (that is what they propose) are daft.
I'm old but not totally daft yet.
We are going to build pipelines to the west coast from the dirtiest oil on the planet and tanker it through the "graveyard of the Pacific".
The "Exon Pacific" ain't seen nothin' yet

Chris Landsea

Chris Landsea, NHC%u2019s Science amd Operations Officer, emailed Heartland, requesting a web page (cached version) listing him as a Heartland expert be removed. The email was posted on the website BigCityLib Strikes Back. Excerpt:

The billboard campaign that you all have recently been displaying is not in good taste nor is it furthering the advancement of better understanding of how our climate fluctuates and changes. Please remove my name from your list of Experts.

Sincerely,

Chris Landsea

I remember when the left called PM Thatcher a tyrant and a murder (Falklands War) and the right put her on a throne.

Now the right is calling her a Tyrant and mad. Funny how time changes a perspective.

Good find to put up Angela. Keep at it.
