One of the best preserved monuments to ancient Native American culture and architecture lies near the Four Corners area of southwestern Colorado. Mostly built into sandstone alcoves and caves along south and southwestern-facing canyon cliffs, the Ancestral Puebloan people, or Anasazi, constructed adobe buildings with rooms and kivas. Some of these buildings, such as the Cliff Palace, had over 150 rooms, and housed over 100 people.

Most houses were much smaller, and only housed 1-5 people. Large or small, the cliff dwellings were set up to maximize water usage efficiency, leaving most of the mesas above for agriculture. The Anasazi made reservoirs for holding extra rain runoff, and made terraces to grow more corn with less erosion of soil.

However, even the careful planning of the Anasazi could not overcome a changing climate, and by 1300 AD, they were forced to leave their cliff homes for points south and east due to a 24 year drought. The Anasazi's decendants are now the Hopi in Arizona, and 19 tribes of Pueblo in New Mexico.

After the Anasazi left, Mesa Verde was mostly left alone until prospectors discovered it in the 1870s. Although treasure hunters looted many artifacts from the cliffs, archaeologists and preservationists lobbied the government to save the area, and their efforts were rewarded in 1906, when Theodore Roosevelt approved the creation of Mesa Verde National Park.

The cam below features Spruce Tree House, which features 130 rooms, and eight kivas. Home to an estimated 60 to 80 people, it measures 216 feet wide, and 89 feet deep!

Good morning! It's been a busy night here; just getting around to posting! It's finallty starting to clear off after a couple of rainy days; we've recieved 1.25" of rain this go-around, which the garden appreciated greatly!

Replaced the Whanganui cam with Denali's Wonder Lake cam; interestingly, the Denali cam is in daylight later in the morning than the Kiwi cam, due to the long days that are in the Arctic this time of year! Nice sunset there at the moment! There was a guy with a white Jeeplike SUV at Milos earlier, too.

Big cam news! We have puppies at Denali! A little over a week old, they'll be placed in the kennel with their momma in a few weeks! You can see a pic of them here.

Hi, bug! The deer will come and go at the feeder, but I think coons can stay there for hours! Rabbits x 3 to you, too!

Thank you, Sandi! White rabbits back atcha!

Happy June to you too,
Pros!

Happy June, GG!

Tony, I'd tell you to clean out the gutters when it wasn't raining, but then they wouldn't be overflowing! :' )

Briar, I would think the Chokai rice paddies were in a cool climate, with the snow-covered mountain in the background!

I finally got here at the right time of day to see the rice paddies at Chokai Mt. If I just could find a variety of rice that likes cool weather, I could grow a crop at my place in early spring.

Good day Ylee.
It looks like your in the rain today according to the radar.
Yesterday by 3;30 PM we had 1.3 inches.
My eavestrough plugged up and I had to clean it. Nice job out in the rain.:(
Enjoy the day.

Well, I'll be finishing up a little early today, since the rest of the shift will be busy! All the cams, except for Whanganui, are doing OK!

Everyone have a good evening; I'll be back tomorrow night!

Busy day! Mt. Chokai cam isn't updating; should be dark there! Whanganui isn't working, either(neither is Akitio, which is on the same server). Hopefully, these cams won't take the weekend off!

I tried to resurrect the code for last year's tropical weathertracker sticker from an old blog, but it's showing the same "waiting for data" blackscreen as the one above! Hopefully, WU will get this straightened out soon!

Bug, maybe someday I'll be able to go to the Grand Canyon, and see all the falls!

Hi, Todd! with my schedule, it's only Tuesday! :P

Hi, Ylee.

I'm not surprised there's no Havasupai Falls cam. From what I know about that area, amenities are pretty basic.

It's a lovely spot, though.

The lighthouse must be really, really popular. The parking lot seems to always be full.

Good morning! It's raining! I know there's a lot of places that are getting too much(or not enough), but this rain is coming just as our crops and gardens need it! Probably will get less than an inch, but that's just fine!

Cams are looking well; Swaledale is looking postcard-perfect with its' mix of sun and clouds! I'm surprised that the cam in Japan is still showing daylight, but as they are exactly 12 hours ahead, with the relatively higher northern latitudes they should still see daylight this time of year! Milos is simply perfect! :' )

Hi, Trauma! If you liked to eat raccoon, there'd be the place to get them! :' )

That's a nice place to spend your childhood summers, Mass! I hope that Sandy spared the old mansion!

Well, it's not time to go home, yet! A coworker from another shift decided to stay home, so I'll cover him for the next four hours!

Hi again, Ylee!

Speaking of memories (and no, I'm not so spent as to start singing the theme to the musical, "Cats", LOL), here's a beautiful picture taken on June 17, 2007, of Good Harbor, Beach in Gloucester, MA by a former WU member named, Tardo.

I spent many daytime summer hours at this beach as a young teen while also occasionally visiting local childhood neighbors of mine that rented a beach house there in the summers during the late 1960's. It was approximately a 45-60 min. drive from our hometown located 12 miles North of Boston.

Nice to see that the ole mansion on the rocks had been kept up and/or renovated through the years. I think she (Tardo) once WU mailed me that, in 2007, the Atlanta based owners were putting it up for sale for a cool $8 million. Not sure if they ever got to sell it for their asking price, especially, before the Sept. 2008 market crash.

Unfortunately, the once public beach became privatized with the condo-development boom in the early 90's. T'was so wonderful to use while public! To think, a nice large lobster roll from the beach's food stand cost only $0.50 to $0.75 in the '60's!!! Quite the by-gone era nowadays!

Ok, Mass, now you have me wondering; why is Nubble Lighthouse infamous? Might have to wiki that one! :' )

I'm happy to provide you with a place that brings back happy memories! Is there a place that's not as crowded as it was 20 years ago? :' )

Here's a Link to where I found the Nubble Lighthouse cam. As you can see, there's plenty of places featured on there, maybe somewhere else you've been before?

Ooops, me, I meant to type famous not infamous! It's obvious today's vast rising temperature and humidity levels have begun to affect my brain! LOL!

Seems the 1912, notoriously entrepreneurial lightkeeper, wife and their 19 lb channel swimming cat certainly gave the infamy element a noble try ... eh? LOL!

Didn't find anything that made the Nubble Lighthouse, properly known as the Cape Neddick Lighthouse, infamous. Wiki says a lightkeeper and his wife were fired by giving tours and boatrides, and neglecting the light in 1912, and the keeper who had a 19 pound cat that swam across the channel to visit its friends!

Got any good dirt, Mass? :' )

Hi Ylee!

It's now steamy and hot in the Northeast, (currently 85F to your 86F) which is quite a vast change from this past weekend's cold and rainy holiday weekend high of 52F! Not complaining, though, as I'd rather get our heat naturally and free rather than from a spaceheater or furnace! LOL!

I just love looking at your webcam of York, ME's famous "Nubble Lighthouse!" Hubby and I used to travel there regularly in the late summer/early fall, during the '90's, as there were far less summer tourists around and circumstances allowed us to travel more. I have pictures of us standing in its parking lot (with the lighthouse directly in the backdrop) dating back to 1993. Hard to believe how 20 yrs can fly by! Hope that time and circumstances will allow us to travel back there again sometime in the near future. It's just one of such beautiful and relatively convenient places to visit amongst New England's vast scenic Atlantic shorelines!

Thanks for giving us such a wonderful taste of the beautiful scenery from local and/or global regions!

Dang, I'm leaking all over! I gotta file a grievance on that one! :- )

Parking lot's almost full at the lighthouse.....

Hi, Alley! Glad you're getting some nice weather! garden's off to a good start, now if only the taters will start coming up, all will be good!

GG, looks like the Swaledale cam will probably become a "semi-regular". I've had a lot of good cams on this blog, to the point I could just recycle the same cams over and over again(it would take a while, since I've probably had over 200 different cams here). But what fun would that be? :' )

Bug, Sandi guessed correctly that you'd like the Swaledale cam, and I'm glad you like the Mesa Verde cam, too! As for the Havasaupia Falls, I checked it out, but they don't have electricity at the falls, so unless they put up a solar-powered cam, it's a no-go, I'm afraid!

Briar, it's not you, it's WU. They have faulty tropical weathersticker HTML, I think. I might go back to an old blog from last year, and pirate the HTML off a working weathersticker, and use that, instead.

Have you seen the foreground of the Chokai Mt. cam yet? There's rice paddys in the foreground! :' )
Member Since: February 3, 2011 Posts: 95 Comments: 15822
I don't know if it's just my glitchy internet connection, but the cam you've got just below your visitor map, is a black box that says "Loading Map Data" every time I come by here. Is it just me?

Ha! I finally figured out that Jostedal Glacier National Park is in Norway. I ain't as dumb as I look!

So summer has arrived in your neck of the woods. I'll bet your garden is doing great. Half of the seeds I planted two weeks ago have yet to sprout (it's been cool and rainy here). Dry weather starting tomorrow. Now, I have to guess whether to give the seeds more time sprout or give up on them and replant because they rotted in the ground. When it comes to choices like that, I seem to guess wrong more often than not.

Ps, Roxie would indeed herd the sheep whether they needed it or not. You should see her go to work at the dog park.

Hi Ylee, I think it's unanimous we all like Swalsdale. Here I thought I would only be a Milos and Leslie booster. Got a trifecta now :)

Oh, my goodness! A double treat!

Mesa Verde and Swaledale!

I knew Sandi would be delighted to see her old stomping grounds!

I wonder if they have any cams around Havasupia Falls, in the Grand Canyon. That would be cool.

Good morning Ylee. Yup another interesting day on the cams. Squirrel fest on the feeder cam, traffic on Milos, sheep grazing in Britain.

Sunny and warm here too but not as bad as you are seeing at the moment. Nice breeze to keep it fresh and help blow some of that humidity off.

Hope your work week has been uneventful and that all is going well on the gardening front. Have a great afternoon buddy...

Good morning, ycd! I think the black WU sticker is a WU glitch, and not anything on my end.

I'm sure those logs can do a bit of damage out there, sort of like the Ohio River when it's nearing flood stage!

Sorry to hear you're still in March mode, weather-wise, Sandi! It's pushing 80 here already, and it's quite humid!

I shall continue to investigate the non-working sticker; perhaps there's some missing HTML somewhere!

The Yorkshires are showing a bit of cloud and mist at the moment, very Yorkshirey! :' )

Actually very "British" as we all are under rain and mist... and it is COLD again!

I get the black screen and "loading map data" too, so it is not you.

Good morning! Ahhhh, it's so good to be back in my old chair! The past few days and nights here have been frustrating, as I've barely had enough time to stop by my blog, much less anyone else's!

Going to be another warm one today, temps are forecast to push 90! A chance of rain is upcoming, which this time is welcomed, as we've had less than 3" for the month!

Can anyone see the tropical weather tracker? All I get is a black screen saying "loading map data". This is also what is shown on the sticker page, so is this a WU glitch, or my own?

I've noticed that my browser recognizes this page as "42351 Weather forecast from Weather Underground", not "Windows to the World". Odd!

Cams look well; a mix of sun and clouds on the cams, with the Jostedal looking particularly inviting! You can see the glacier in the center of the image!

Hi, oz! Looks all clear in Sydney at the moment; "Sidneysiders" is a funny nickname; I wonder if they like being called that?

Good morning, Pros! You're up early! The Yorkshires are showing a bit of cloud and mist at the moment, very Yorkshirey! :' )
Member Since: February 3, 2011 Posts: 95 Comments: 15822
Good morning Ylee. Coons are feasting at the feeder cam. It is nicely clear and verdant in the Yorkshires. And I should go back to bed and try to sleep. Have a good day my Kentucky buddy.

Hi Ylee, although the cam looks clear Sydney is experiencing its third day of dense fog! Yes it is unusual and has caused all sorts of problems for Sydneysiders with traffic, water and air problems with some flights cancelled and others with FIVE hour delays. Glad I was not at Sydney airport yesterday!

Not sure about your case, ycd. Your neck of the woods is a lot wetter than Mesa Verde and Mammoth Cave.

Well, I have to check out for today. Tomorrow, I'll be back at my regular job, where I can attend to the blogs properly! :' )
Member Since: February 3, 2011 Posts: 95 Comments: 15822
I dunno Ylee:
About the dark stains above the old dwellings:
It makes sense that the smoke would have made those marks over the many years but where our cabin sits there are is similar vertical staining. Let me check on that.
I assumed the staining was due to occasional moisture encouraging lichen growth.
One of the main problems with Standing waves is that one is not actually "stuck out there". While going up and down you are influenced by the tidal current and wind.
So far the ancient "Mercruiser 165" has always brought us in:

Good afternoon! Finally got caught up at work, so I can catch up here! Pretty dang warm here, temps are approaching 90 at Owensboro, which usually means here at work it's nearing 100! Summer's finally arriving!

At present, I can only see five working cams, as I'm not on my regular computer! Has anyone noticed the black vertical streaks in the rock outcropping over Spruce House in Mesa Verde? I'm certain they were caused by years of campfires sending smoke up the cliffsides. Inside Mammoth Cave, Rangers pointed out where smoke has permanantly stained the insides of the cave walls, and I'm convinced the same process occured at Mesa Verde!

ycd, I assume being stuck out there can be disconcerting and frustrating! I don't know about being called a blind horse, but I have been compared to part of a horse, lol!

GG, Roxie would be a natural at herding sheep! Of course, she would be trying to herd them whether they needed it or not! :- )

cal, I'd love to see all the architecture in that area, Native and Spanish! Adobe doesn't look right here in Ky., but there, with the blue skies and pinion, it's perfect!

oz, I saw that it was so foggy the cam pic was gray early in the shift, then turned clear later, but didn't realize it was fog! Must've been something to "can't see"! :' )

Rob, don't care for pea soup, either in a bowl, or on a cam! :' )

Sandi, I don't know what breed of sheep they are, but I'll bet they'd go good over hickory smoke! :' )

Cloudy, with rain here...I want to go to Milos... wall to wall sunshine today!

Lots of sheep in Swaledale today.. I wonder if they are the Swaledale breed.

Swaldale is beautiful! I bet those rock walls have been up for hundreds of years, they are amazing.

Mesa Verde is the place I would like to go! I missed going to Chaco but I have been to the Pueblo in Taos which is really neat to see. Native Americans still live there and they all have their Kiva ladders to go up to the next level.

I hope your day is good, your weather looks pretty nice right now.

Wow the feeder cam changes fast. Was there a few minutes ago and three hefty deer were chowing down. Now nothing.
Absolutely am in love with the Swaldale Cam. Green pastures, sheep, blue sky. Great place to be right now. Need to bring Roxie so she can herd the sheep.

There you be Ylee:
The tidal flows you picked up on are likely on the other side of Quadra from Harriet: Seymour Narrows.
Mind you a tug and tow went down off Cape Mudge the day I ran and our aborted course was rounding that point.
Quadra Island is the northern terminus of the Salish Sea so when a South Easter blows it has more than a hundred miles of fetch. That's not too significant in the open ocean but out there the wind wave does not meet a rushing tidal flow. Here it does. I have been stuck in "Standing Waves" where the water just goes up and down
"Like an old blind horse".

Good evening! We're having some scattered stuff passing through; looked pretty formidable a few hours ago, but it's in the process of raining itself out!

Cams are looking well; another nice day in Milos, looks like lots of clouds elsewhere! One fat coon!

Oz, looks like the Darling Harbor cam is doing fine at the moment. Hope you enjoy your rain, but that you don't get too much!

Hi, Pros! I slept, got up, ate, and came to work! Nothing special here, although I get extra pay for being here!

Wab, I have quite a few more years before I retire, but I'd still like to make it out West! Maybe next year!

3 1/2 hours to go, Trauma!

ycd, by looking at archived photos of the Quadra cam, it looks like it had a very strong tide! I can see why you had to turn back!

Gonna turn into a cat and nap when I can...LOL All cams look great, coonie at the feeder. I often wonder with all the corn those critters eat, if when it ferments in their tummies, do they get drunk...ROFLMBO Oh the silly thoughts that comes in one's mind at this time of the morning.Heee heee heee. I live and work in metropolitan Lewisport, KY. I like webcams, through which I can see the whole world!
