Ode on the Spring
BY THOMAS GRAY
Lo! where the rosy-bosom'd Hours,
Fair Venus' train appear,
Disclose the long-expecting flowers,
And wake the purple year!
The Attic warbler pours her throat,
Responsive to the cuckoo's note,
The untaught harmony of spring:
While whisp'ring pleasure as they fly,
Cool zephyrs thro' the clear blue sky
Their gather'd fragrance fling.

Where'er the oak's thick branches stretch
A broader, browner shade;
Where'er the rude and moss-grown beech
O'er-canopies the glade,
Beside some water's rushy brink
With me the Muse shall sit, and think
(At ease reclin'd in rustic state)
How vain the ardour of the crowd,
How low, how little are the proud,
How indigent the great!

Still is the toiling hand of Care:
The panting herds repose:
Yet hark, how thro' the peopled air
The busy murmur glows!
The insect youth are on the wing,
Eager to taste the honied spring,
And float amid the liquid noon:
Some lightly o'er the current skim,
Some show their gaily-gilded trim
Quick-glancing to the sun.

To Contemplation's sober eye
Such is the race of man:
And they that creep, and they that fly,
Shall end where they began.
Alike the busy and the gay
But flutter thro' life's little day,
In fortune's varying colours drest:
Brush'd by the hand of rough Mischance,
Or chill'd by age, their airy dance
They leave, in dust to rest.

Methinks I hear in accents low
The sportive kind reply:
Poor moralist! and what art thou?
A solitary fly!
Thy joys no glitt'ring female meets,
No hive hast thou of hoarded sweets,
No painted plumage to display:
On hasty wings thy youth is flown;
Thy sun is set, thy spring is gone—
We frolic, while 'tis May.

It's finally spring!(At least in Ky.! Sorry, Tony!) Yay! Trees are budding, birds are singing, bugs are hitting the windshield; well, I'm not crazy about the bugs, but it's a fair trade for the elimination of cold weather and gray landscapes!

No gray landscapes this time, except for the feeder cam at night! :' )

Good evening! Another very nice day here, more clouds than yesterday, and temps remaining in the low 80s! Supposed to have more clouds tomorrow, and a chance of rain Friday! I'd love to get my planting done tomorrow, but the garden remains stubbornly wet! :P

Mammoth Cave cam is back online, and one oriole on WTS' cam! Hopefully, I'll get the new blog up tonight!

Janet, skye, Pros, wab, bug, Reno, WTS, and oz, thank you for your May wishes!

Janet, we have a redbud tree that blooms this time of year, usually a week or two before the dogwoods, but I'm not sure if those are the same as your redtips!

Evenin', Todd!

ycd, you and janet both noticed the logs on the Blumental cam. I have no clue without having a wider view. A frustrating aspect of cam viewing, sometimes!

Reno, we never had May Day treat bags like that, but my aunt remembers having a Maypole while in school!

As for all the white rabbit business... it's Sandi's fault, lol!

Tony, I wonder how robins find anything to eat in the snow? Can't find any worms there!

Bug, you're probably right about the Milos rabbit effect, but I can still see it around noon their time, 4AM here!

Oz, if it's anything like here, the street gutters won't be cleared of debris untill the street has flooded a couple of times! ;' )

Welcome May!!!! For you guys it means warmer weather for us colder.... the leaves are very autumnal and a dreaded weed called soursobs (an oxalis) raise their heads. They look spectacular in bloom but they are a nightmare to get rid of! Have been clearing debris from the gum trees outside our gates to keep the gutters clear in the road the neighbours think I'm nuts..... that's what the council is for. Oh well it keeps me out of mischief, lots of squirrels at the feeder cam.

White Rabbits and Happy May Day!

I've noticed that the 'Milos Wabit' effect has almost disappeared. It must be more noticable at certain times of the year, when the sun is at a certain angle.

The NC feeder cam is just oozing with squirrels. There must be a dozen or more of the little critters.

Thanks to Google - Rabbits now make sense - or not.

This was a big controversy at the Lab (and indeed persists around the world) as the theories are not only competing, but also mutually exclusive. Is it good luck to repeat (like a mantra) the phrase Rabbit, Rabbit, Rabbit as your first words on the first day of the month, or should one say White Rabbit, White Rabbit, White Rabbit ... Or the Last utterance? And why does anyone care? Why Indeed?

Our dogwoods did a beautiful job this year, however the apple trees and the pear tree are not looking like we'll get anything from them once again. Do you all have red-tips out your way? It seems to be a terrific year for them in our yard this year. We planted those along a fence line the first year we moved in. Not much out of them for over 10 years and this year they seem to be making up for lost time!
I am now wondering why someone piled up all those logs across the road from "Bloom". Seems a strange place to offload or load such a pile.
take care~

Sandi, I didn't notice the flowers in the yard; they look like dandelions, but do they grow those in Europe?

Here we are into the fifth month of the year...I can't get over how this year is flying by!

I wish you a very happy, healthy and safe May:)

Have you seen the buttercups (or maybe dandelions) on the lawn in "Bloom"ental? And yes, pat on back for picking such a great cam to show the on-set of Spring:)

I've spent most of the night chasing cams, and trying to figure out how the next blog is going to work out; I'm getting there! :' )

WTS, the green blob on my radar is ground clutter. don't know why that happens, but I'll bet someone here does!

It would be the cam capture of all time if someone saw you tangling with a yeti, lol!

Hi, sp! Can't you see WTS going after a yeti with a flyswatter? :' )

Hi, Ylee. So you are getting all the nice weather! Lots of per-May gray here. Upside, bees don't like it much, more food for the birds ;)
What is that green bloom that shows up on your radar about this time last few days? Very round.

Good evening! I have to finish the perfectly gorgeous day by having to come to work! However, I have WU, so it's not all bad, lol!

Couple of deer at the feeder cam, ans Mammoth Cave cam is still down! I'll continue scouting for cams for the new blog tonight, and hopefully by tomorrow night, have the new one up!

Oz, there's some dogs here that must have some chow in them, because I think they want to dig to China! Via the flowerbeds and the garden! :P

WTS, looks like the gan's all there! I had one male ruby hummer today, and I might've seen a female, but I'm not sure!

Alley, I know home ownership can be tough on older folks on a fixed income; I know you'll hate giving up the kitties and your pretty rosebushes for the convenience of living in an apartment, card-playing neighbors or not. Me, I hope the hearse pulls up in my driveway when it's my time to go.

Sandi, our forsythia has already finished it's blooming; our dogwood is under stress, probably because it got below freezing while it was starting to bloom. I seemed to have chosen well when picking out a cam for this spring blog. "Bloom"ental is right!

Two small monkeys in the pool and four deer at the feeder.
Have you also noticed the yellow forsythia on the "Bloom"ental cam - that garden is becoming a veritable blossom filled domain!.

Wish it was only once a year Ylee, that I had to pay taxes but its a 4 times a year event then there is the house insurance. Ah the joy of owning your own place. I think this may be the last year I will live here. Will probably redo the bathroom next winter. Want to remove the tub and install a walk in shower. Have difficult getting in and out of the tub here. By then I will qualify for a special senior's grant Ontario offers. Then I think I will list this place come early Spring and move into a senior's residence in a 2 bedroom apt. It will be nice to have someone I can play cards with and other board games to help pass the time. I can even get involved in cooking for those who have difficulty in doing so themselves.

Things are kinda slow; even the hummers have taken a break! :' )

Marginal luck finding the cams I want; I'll probably muddle through and post it, but I may keep it up for only a week, as there's other cams I want on here!

Bug, the black dot where the sun was at Milos is caused by too much light on the camera's sensor, causing the affected area to go black!

Hi, Alley! Boy, you had a painful day in the old pocketbook, didn't you? :( At least you only have to pay your property taxes once a year!

No wonder you weren't looking forward to having your yard mowed; I guess you have to "train" him every year?

Good afternoon Ylee. Pretty quiet on the cams at the moment. Dark cloudy skies here, lots of rain this morning but the temps are not bad. My weeping cherry is in full bloom. I see the lad on Fri evening cut off some of my lilies and all my chives. Oh well, when he comes again I will have to show him where NOT to cut. LOL

Hope your having a good afternoon. E-filed my taxes today. They have been done for over a month but because I was not getting anything back there was no rush to send them in. Paid my property taxes today as well as my regular monthly bills. Now I am in the poor house for the month of May until my next check. Oh well. Such is the life of a homeowner. LOL

Have a great day dear one.

Are we having a solar elipse or something? There's a big black dot in the middle of the sun on the Milos cam. It's either an eclipse or someone needs to clean the cam lens !

I've been having a blast, watching the Cornell red tailed hawk cam. I've got it up on my other monitor.

I wonder about myself, sometimes. Here I am, eating lunch, and I'm watching a webcam with bits and pieces of carcasses strewn about and the only problem I'm having is thinking how I forgot to put the feta cheese in my salad.

Good morning! Cloudy start to the day; hopefully it'll clear up and get up in to the 70s, as forecast!

The Blumental cam is more like the Bloomental cam this morning, as the tree in the middle of the image has a bunch of white blooms! It reminds me of a dogwood, but I'm not sure if they have those over there in Austria!

WTS, thanks for the oriole explanation! And a nice photo, too! We don't have Costcos here, just Sam's Clubs, although the premise is the same!

Poor Sandi! So many cloudy days, your eyes are "blue sky challenged", lol! As for the lorry, it's probably hauling something? ;' )(You'll get me for that one, lol)

Quoting palmettobug53:

Things seem rather quiet on the cams. Again. I must peep in at the wrong times.

There's an oriole at the hummer feeders. I think. It doesn't have a black head but the rest of the body and colouring looks like an oriole.

These are pretty much the only orioles I have seen here, Adult male (bright yellow) and female (not so much) Hooded orioles. Males have that black 'bib', females not.

Only one right, Rob? I'm bummed! Wonder which one I missed? I'll have to check it out!

That's just mind boggling, WTS! I had a couple of families of hummers hit my feeder a couple of years ago, and I think it hit maybe a quart a day? I guess that's no different than someone spending $50 a month on birdseed!(or dog or cat food, for that matter)

I noticed that you changed your setup from earlier in the day; I hope you can keep the bees away!

Oz, that sounds like a lot of work! They have machines you can rent that can aerate the whole yard in short order! Of course, it'll cost you $$$, lol!

Oh no, I missed the yeti!! He must be hiding in the hillside trees during the day ;) Not missing the bees, though :( they were absent this year up to a week ago. Now I am in feeder alteration mode trying to make it less desirable to the bees.
Right now, the feeders take a good 1-2 gallons of mix a day. 30 gallons a month, 25 pound bag makes about 15 gallons, so about 50 pounds of sugar a month, yikes!! The hummer cam only shows a few of the feeders!
