Ode on the Spring
BY THOMAS GRAY
Lo! where the rosy-bosom'd Hours,
Fair Venus' train appear,
Disclose the long-expecting flowers,
And wake the purple year!
The Attic warbler pours her throat,
Responsive to the cuckoo's note,
The untaught harmony of spring:
While whisp'ring pleasure as they fly,
Cool zephyrs thro' the clear blue sky
Their gather'd fragrance fling.

Where'er the oak's thick branches stretch
A broader, browner shade;
Where'er the rude and moss-grown beech
O'er-canopies the glade,
Beside some water's rushy brink
With me the Muse shall sit, and think
(At ease reclin'd in rustic state)
How vain the ardour of the crowd,
How low, how little are the proud,
How indigent the great!

Still is the toiling hand of Care:
The panting herds repose:
Yet hark, how thro' the peopled air
The busy murmur glows!
The insect youth are on the wing,
Eager to taste the honied spring,
And float amid the liquid noon:
Some lightly o'er the current skim,
Some show their gaily-gilded trim
Quick-glancing to the sun.

To Contemplation's sober eye
Such is the race of man:
And they that creep, and they that fly,
Shall end where they began.
Alike the busy and the gay
But flutter thro' life's little day,
In fortune's varying colours drest:
Brush'd by the hand of rough Mischance,
Or chill'd by age, their airy dance
They leave, in dust to rest.

Methinks I hear in accents low
The sportive kind reply:
Poor moralist! and what art thou?
A solitary fly!
Thy joys no glitt'ring female meets,
No hive hast thou of hoarded sweets,
No painted plumage to display:
On hasty wings thy youth is flown;
Thy sun is set, thy spring is gone—
We frolic, while 'tis May.

It's finally spring!(At least in Ky.! Sorry, Tony!) Yay! Trees are budding, birds are singing, bugs are hitting the windshield; well, I'm not crazy about the bugs, but it's a fair trade for the elimination of cold weather and gray landscapes!

No gray landscapes this time, except for the feeder cam at night! :' )

Enjoy your shift.

Snow monkeys! In the snow!! Isn't it the middle of April?
Hummercam is acting up, may be overheating, working on it :(
Bird activity is up, especially early evening.

I've never seen orioles around here, either. Or the feeders. I just knew about them from reading Birds and Blooms magazine.

See ya tomorrow, Ylee.

Changed the location of the Yidney cam to its' home website instead of WU, since it updates reliably from there!

WTS' cam is down.... :( Mammoth Cave is also down, for some reason! Still snowing in Matsumoto, and there's a moon over Milos again!

Bug, I've never seen an oriole here! That doesn't stop the big box home improvement stores from marketing them, though! I wonder if there are any around here?

Janet, I wonder how a woodpecker could get to the nectar? it's beak is too big! It was probably more curious than anything!

It's not unusual for orioles to frequent a hummingbird feeder but they prefer a sugar water feeder with a perch. You can buy oriole feeders.

Oriole feeder

Orioles have a sweet tooth and love grape jelly. They'll eat orange marmalade, red cherry, strawberry and raspberry jellies. They like fresh oranges, too.

I think you are so right-on about everyone beng spring challenged! Gatlingburg looks nice with the mountains in the green.
We have finches come to our hummingbird feeders. There was even a red-headed woodpecker last week checking it out!
take care~

Ylee, I'm not surprised to hear that the Eastern Band Cherokee Nation has a casino. The gameing industry is a good way to get revenge on the white man and make money doing it. I'm all for it. Then, again, I don't gamble!

A girlfriend and I spent a day on the reservation up there, with the Griffin family back in the summer of '70. (Or was it Griffith? It's been a few years.)

If you want the daylights scared out of you, drive up to Big Cove with a local at the wheel! Guess they were used to it but I was a poor flat-land visitor, bug eyed at the roadside drop offs.

I think the oriole on WTS' cam is confused, as it's at the hummer feeder! :' )

Looks like snow at the Matsumoto cam; I believe they are spring-challenged, too!

Bug, you can see on the top cam all the cabins and whatnot peeking out amongst the trees. Cherokee has a casino now, and all that entails, so it's no longer the sleepy little tourist trap, either.

Go up 100 miles to the NE, along the TN border, and it's still pretty nice!

Three little hummers having their treat at the feeder, moved down and squirrels enjoying their corn feast, life goes on. Dang it's one chilly start to the day, still windy but nothing like what we had yesterday. By next week, my weeping cherry will be bursting with bloom. Sun is shining with periods of cloud, but all in all not too bad yet. We could see a few flurries tonite but I am hoping that is a false reading for us. I could see it happening more NE of me or even N of me though. Back to warm clothes and winter jackets for a couple of days.

We did see quite a bit of rain but I hear more is in the forecast for next week again. Yup 4 days of it... you know anyone who has a couple of sheep I can borrow for this lawn of mine? LOL Sure is growing.

Anyway have a great day Ylee. Try to stay out of mischief. LOL

Note: only good thing this crazy weather, the sap will be running soon...ooooh Canadian Maple Syrup...yum yum.

Ylee, I suppose that's one reason why I've not had any overwhelming desire to head back that way.

It was pristine, way back when. Little traffic, no crowds, no tourist traps, other than Gatlinburg and Cherokee, maybe. Mostly, it was just miles and miles of winding roads with nothing but beautiful scenery.

It would break my heart to see what it looks like now.

Good morning! We had a light frost this morning; temps started out in the low 30s, but the sun quickly started warming things up and melted the frost! Supposed to be in the upper 50s today.

Cams appear to be in mostly working order. Yidney rocks cam stopped updating around noon local time; hopefully they will get it going by their sunrise tomorrow, which is this afternoon here! Some trees on the blumental cam are blooming yellow! Don't have a clue as to what it is.

Pros, thank you for your spring contribution! I'll bet he didn't have any pollen Friday, either! :' )

GG, WTS' hummers have that natural California mellow vibe, I reckon! :' )

Bug, I'm afraid you wouldn't recognize the area around the Smokies today; evrything is so built up in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge anymore, and the park itself is always crowded. :' ( Best time to go is late January through February, IMO.

Wab, we only had about an inch of rain the other night, with almost no thunder. Pretty benign, really!

I'll bet money they don't hunt in those woods.....

Oz, I hope that your daughter sees some spring soon, although it looks like it's going to be May before it does! :' (

No clobbering here, WTS! Just a nice steady rain the other night!

Great captures, Sandi! And you and wab have the record! It seems that the mineral block was popular that night!

The coons weren't giving up their spot; "Back off, Bambi!" LOL

Hi, Alley! With the stiff wind and clouds, yesterday was colder than a welldiggers' tuckus! :' ) We'll start warming up by tomorrow, hope you will soon follow!
Member Since: February 3, 2011 Posts: 109 Comments: 18688
Hi, Ylee! Happy Saturday.

Wab, it's spring time! The deer are on the move, looking for all those fresh spring shoots and leaves.
And no deer in his/her right mind will pass up a free handout of corn, if they stumble across some.

Hi Ylee, everyone. Just scooted out to see if there was any mail and OMG was that wind cold. Burrr. You can feel the chill for sure. Browyn was just here having his later lunch and is now off to his warm shelter where he sleeps. He is such a nice kitty.

Well looks like the next couple of days will be chilly again before it warms up for Monday. Will be so glad to see April finally gone, gone, gone. Hope May promises to bring us alot more warmth without all the bloody rain.

Have a great day dear one.

Hi, ho, Ylee!

Not much shaking on the cams at the moment.

It's been years since I've been up to the Smokies. Loved those early morning mountain mists and cooler weather. Icy cold streams in the campground for the morning bath! There was no need, whatsoever, for morning coffee! Guaranteed to open your eyes, take your breath away and, possibly, give you heart failure! LOL

It's been 30 years or more, so they probably have all the modern conveniences, these days.

Hi, yesterday saw an oriole when I peeked in at work, and this morning, 5, count 'em five humming birds at WTS's cam.
Amazed they all get along. I have pugilistic hummers that fight over any feeder in the yard when they could each have their own.

This is my contribution to your spring blog.

We have an ugly rainy day here but it is not stopping hubby from going out to play golf. Last night he informed that there are 'no pollens on the golf course'! That's his Boston kind of humor. I might add, that perhaps there is no rain on the golf course either! LOL

I hope that you are well.

Whew! So I wasn't asleep when I was here. That's a relief! I wouldn't want anyone to think I'd been sleep-browsing.

And, since Ylee only features the best of the best of the best cams, I'd say WTS did hit the big time. Yessirree.

I didn't expect to be here tonight, Rob! But one phone call, and here I am!

Briar, when you were here the other day, my blog was only half done! I couldn't get it finished in time, and since I was on the boss' computer, I couldn't just save it to a text file! WTS' cam was added that night, after I returned!

I wouldn't call this blog "the big time", but WTS does have a nice cam, and deserves to be showcased!
Member Since: February 3, 2011 Posts: 109 Comments: 18688
Was I asleep when I was here on the 15th? Or did you slip in with WTS's hummer/oriole cam when I wasn't looking? Either way, I guess that means WTS is famous now. He's hit the big time!

Cherry blossoms are starting to do their thing in Matsumoto. Another sign of spring! The first of my fruit trees are blossoming now -- the pears. No cherry blossoms in my back yard yet.

Thanks for the snow monkey capture, JanetLee. All I generally only ever see is one loner who seems to spend a lot of time on the back edge of the pool. Nice to see them in shirt-sleeves weather -- must be spring.

Hi, janet! You posted while I was typing! It's interesting that most of the people that were there during the winter months were Japanese. Now that it's warmed up, it appears that most of the tourists, at least at this moment, are European!

Good evening! Got called in tonight! It's been very warm and muggy today, as Tstorms has been firing up just to my east, and headed toward Louisville. Aside from a brief shower this morning, we've recieved no rain! Tomorrow's supposed to be the active day, as we're in a borderline moderate chance for severe weather.

This computer cannot access the Glitch cams, so I can only see half of them! :( One hummer at WTS cam.

Hi, WTS! It strikes me as funny that you accessed your cam through my blog! :' ) I do appreciate all the work you've put into your feeders, and your cam setup!

bug, might not see too much "smoke" this time of year, the "smoke" in the Smoky Mountains comes from leaf transpiration, and humidity! Not much of either at the moment!

Thanks for the notices, wab! We're in pretty good shape at the moment, with the Tstorm watch expiring in an hour, and nothing on the radar!

Thank you, dix, for the compliment! It gives me the confidence that I'm doing something right!

Hi, Sandi! This time of year brings wind and changes in the weather to both the northern and southern hemisphere, I believe!

Tony, I'm sure Abbey would cause quite a stir at the feeder cam, lol!

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0484
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0254 PM CDT TUE APR 16 2013

AREAS AFFECTED...FAR SRN IL...IND AND PARTS OF WRN AND CENTRAL KY

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE

VALID 161954Z - 162130Z

PROBABILITY OF WATCH ISSUANCE...40 PERCENT

SUMMARY...POTENTIAL EXISTS FOR ADDITIONAL TSTM DEVELOPMENT THIS
AFTERNOON INTO THE EARLY EVENING ACROSS PARTS OF THE LOWER OH/TN
VALLEYS. IF A CLUSTER OF STORMS DEVELOPS...THEN A WATCH MAY BE
NEEDED.

DISCUSSION...SURFACE ANALYSES INTO THE MID AFTERNOON INDICATED THE
BOUNDARY IN FAR SRN IL HAD BEGUN TO MOVE NWD...WHILE THE NEWD
EXTENSION OF THIS FRONT INTO SRN IND AND CENTRAL OH REMAINED MORE OF
COLD FRONT WITH GRADUAL ESEWD MOVEMENT. A RELATIVELY NARROW CORRIDOR
OF INSTABILITY HAS DEVELOPED ALONG AND S OF THE FRONTAL ZONE FROM AR
INTO FAR SRN IL...WRN TN AND ACROSS MUCH OF KY WITH MLCAPE RANGING
FROM 1000-2000 J/KG. ALTHOUGH AREA WSR-88D VWP DATA INDICATED
GRADUAL WEAKENING OF LOW LEVEL WINDS...THE SRN EXTENT OF STRONGER
WLY MIDLEVEL WINDS OVER IL TO OH AND SOME BACKING OF LOW LEVEL WINDS
HAVE RESULTED IN STRENGTHENING EFFECTIVE BULK SHEAR THIS AFTERNOON
ACROSS THE DISCUSSION AREA.

WHILE THE CAPE/SHEAR PARAMETER SPACE FAVORS ORGANIZED STRONG TO
SEVERE STORMS...THERE REMAINS SOME UNCERTAINTY WITH THE OVERALL
EVOLUTION OF THE CURRENT STORMS IN FAR SRN IL TO FAR NWRN TN...AND
THE NUMBER OF ADDITIONAL STORMS THAT COULD DEVELOP DURING THE NEXT
SEVERAL HOURS. THIS REGION RESIDES WITHIN HEIGHT RISES WHICH MAY
TEND TO BE THE PRIMARY FACTOR INHIBITING GREATER CONVECTIVE COVERAGE
AND SUSTAINABILITY OF UPDRAFTS. THE LAST SEVERAL RUNS OF THE HRRR
SUGGEST WEAKENING INHIBITION ACROSS THIS REGION WILL CONTINUE TO
SUPPORT TSTM DEVELOPMENT...THOUGH THERE REMAINS NO CLEAR SIGNAL FOR
GREATER ORGANIZATION INTO CLUSTERS.
