Banff National Park is the oldest national park in Canada, first established in 1885. It has an area of 2,564 sq. mi., or 6,641 sq. km. It is located in SW Alberta, near the border with British Colombia, in the Canadian Rockies. It is a dramatic landscape of glacier-cut mountains, hot springs, glaciers, and lakes.

Banff is unique among national parks in Canada by actually having an incorporated town within its' borders, a town of the same name with a population of about 7600. It serves as a hub for the tourist activities at the park, including golf courses, skiing, hiking, and enjoying the hot springs. It is also one of the most visited parks in Canada, with annual visits approaching 4 million.

A popular tourist attraction is the Banff Gondola, which takes from the town to the top of Sulphur mountain, where at an elevation of 7484 feet, offers a grand view of Banff. There is a couple of cams at the top of Sulphur Mt., one of which I'm pleased to highlight this week!

I just corrected that entry. I have never been to Morocco but now we can both spell Abidjan.
You summed the answer perfectly, by the way, even with faulty information.

Same here, Todd! Might get some snow Thursday, then cool off again.

Flying to Abbijan? ;' )

#46:
I've been there Ylee but we never flew in the night - Visual Flight Rules or VFR I think they call it. If there are no lights below there will be no "Ground Control".
Best night flight:
Marseilles to Abidjan on Air France - Pat (Ivorian business man) and I were smoking and drinking and swapping stories in the rear seats of the 747. As we flew over the Sahara there was a full moon above and a thunder storm over the mountains with cloud to cloud lightning.
Pat said: "I have flown this route many times. I've never seen anything like this."
I thought to myself: "This is a view fit for the Gods. What am I doing here?"

I reckon because the street lights make the same patterns as the circuit boards in the movie! Personally, I'd rather be in a place where you didn't see any lights as you flew overhead!

Morning Ylee:
I slept in this morning so the streetlights in Banff are off but I have seen that dawn here on checking in.
Flying over this continent on a clear night each town sparkles with street lights. That image reminds me of the movie "Tron" for some reason.

Good morning! Coldest day of the year so far; 14 when I left the house, on its way to a high of 22! Keeping an eye on the next system, which gives us a chance of snow!

Cafe China cam looks wonky; will switch it out with its' sister cam if it continues. Surfers Paradise looks awesome, with the moon shining through the cloud layer! Plenty of elk, too!

Bug, I have a Serendipity cam, lol! It is neat how things happen that way! I've seen Guy's DD&D a few times; how does he eat some of that stuff? ;')

I know Aaron(WunderYakuza) is still around, as he's added the Panama Canal cam that was our #2 last year in the past few weeks.

GG, a furnace with the door open is your best friend around here! I see you have your alarm fixed! :')

Sandi, I think everyone is getting a touch of the deep freeze! Well, St. John is 85F...:')

Hi, ycd! The Banff cam this morning has the mountains in sunshine, while the town still has the sreetlights on! It is a magnificent scene, isn't it?

Hi, Pros! I had thought maybe the elk had left for better grounds when I first put the cam up, as all I saw was one solitary elk! I'm glad all his friends showed up! :')

Cal, I'm sure the elk are pretty well taken care of at the Refuge; it's good to see the Boy Scouts active in helping out!

oz, I hope you get some rain soon; I'm guessing nothing from the tropics is going to give you any relief! :(

Hey, Trauma! Got your long johns on yet? ;')

You have us whupped on temperature pretty good, wab! If it was that cold here, there may have been an hour or two delay at school!
Member Since: February 3, 2011 Posts: 86 Comments: 14565
Hey it's colder at your house than mine. That's not right. Keep the furnace stoked.

Brisbane and Spindle are beautiful this morning. One deer at the cam.
Your temp says 26f which is brrr chilly. Was over at Plapmans blog and his was -27f. Now that is just crazy cold.
Still, 26f is bad by my standards so hope you are keeping warm.
Member Since: March 25, 2007 Posts: 244 Comments: 8878
Hi Ylee, yep that was our high for the day big drop in temps but very welcome! No rain though and everything is so dry even our cacti garden is looking shrivelled! In the city of Adelaide they found lots of dead flying foxes and thought it was a virus but now they say it was just too much heat!Love the elk cam and Brisbane looks good but they are due thunderstorms later never thought as a Brit I would look forward to rain but we could do with some now.

WOW... the Stanislaus cam. They still have their tree lit!
Member Since: October 7, 2005 Posts: 229 Comments: 24575
That's nice to know. The cupboard can get pretty bare with all that snow on the ground.
Member Since: October 7, 2005 Posts: 229 Comments: 24575
They do feed the elk there. And I think that the Boy Scouts are allowed to collect the shed antlers and then they are auctioned off with part of the proceeds going to the alfalfa pellets that they are fed.

Banff is beautiful today!!!
Member Since: Posts: Comments:
Yep. Lotsa elk. I wonder if they put down forage for them in the winter? To attract them for the Inn's visitors? As well as helping them out, food wise.
Member Since: October 7, 2005 Posts: 229 Comments: 24575
Lots of Elk foraging in the snow. Neat.

Love looking at Milos... sun, sand and sea - plus double the temperature than we have!

We have hovered around freezing or below for almost a fortnight, not even warming up during the day to give us a break.

Ah, well, soon be spring, only a week left of January!

Good Morning. Somehow changed my clock time an hour ahead while setting the alarm. Woke at 3am instead of 4am. Got ready, came out in the living room and saw all the clocks read 3:20am. Doh.

Hi, ho, Ylee! Nice selection of cams again. The same and, yet, a bit different. Keeps us on our toes.

I was delighted to see you mention WunderYakuza! I haven't talked to Aaron in several years. He used to have a blog here and was really interactive with the members. He changed duties some years back and was working in the background. I had wondered if he was even still here.

I thought about you last night! I was watching Triple D with Guy Fieri. They visited J.J. Brewster's in Lexington, KY.

Imagine how excited I got when they started talking about BBQ mutton being a western KY specialty!

"YLee told me about that, just a few weeks ago! Oh, my gosh! And it's right here on TV!" LOL

And to top it off, later in the same show, they went to The Farmer's Shed, in Lexington, SC (!) and prepared shrimp and grits. The very thing I was talking about, when you told me about BBQ mutton!

Isn't it odd how that happens? You won't know anything about something or someone, it comes up in a casual conversation and then a few days or weeks later, the subject or person pops up in a completely different way. There's a word for that but I can't remember what it is. Serendipity?

Hi, Pros! Glad the bad weather missed you! Place Stanislaus is popular place, I believe! I've seen what looks like teachers taking a class, all in a neat row, on a tour I imagine, and I've seen people there in the wee hours!

Hope you have a great day!
Member Since: February 3, 2011 Posts: 86 Comments: 14565
Good morning. I just looked out to find a flake of snow but it missed us in my area, it stayed South of us. Good. However I love the Place Stanislas with just enough enough snow to make it look like a very pretty snow scene but not enough to make life miserable. Lots of people walking around too.

Wishing you a good Friday and weekend.

Here's a tip: lay on your good shoulder, then have SB wedge up behind you! Works like a charm, unless you roll over on top of her(and that ain't gonna happen, lol!)!

Take care!

Just saw it, I love that cam, you never know what is
going to show up there!

Think I'll try to get a couple hours of sleep again.
I keep rolling over onto the bad shoulder in my sleep.
Works like an alarm clock and an ejector seat all in one.:)

See you later.

No point on wasting taxpayers' money on someting that'll only be used every 5-10 years, I guess!

Good luck on the MRI today, BTW!
Member Since: February 3, 2011 Posts: 86 Comments: 14565
Yeah, I was thinking I would not want to try and drive
to the MRI place this morning on ice and snow. This
poor town doesn't have any snow equipment at all.

When it snows here the whole town just shuts down for
as long as the snow is on the roads. :)

Hey, Snake! Yep, working the night shift! Looks like Macon is going to be shut out of getting snow this time! :(

I'm glad you didn't get any freezing rain, though!

Hi, Alley! Not as cold here, but chilly enough to appreciate an electric space heater next to my chair! :') I hope you find something good to watch tonight!

Hope you get some good rest!

Morning Ylee, are you on the night shift tonight?
39.1*F here in Macon this morning, no snow for us.

Nice fat deer at the feeder, storm brewing over Milos and Banff lights in the background. What else would be more fun. I think the people in France have their lights up until after Winter Carnival, much like old Quebec City...

Good morning Ylee...darn its cold here at the moment, hope it starts to warm up soon...only 18F. Burrrrrrrr. Suppose to go up to just above freezing then near 40 tomorrow.

Think I will go and see what the late tele has playing. Once I feed the kitties, then I will try to get a bit more sleep.

Have a great night, sweetie. Stay well.

Hi, Briar! You'd think the people in Nancy, France would have put up their Christmas lights by now!

Those shops in China looks lile a fun place to go and haggle! :')
Member Since: February 3, 2011 Posts: 86 Comments: 14565
It's fun and interesting to see the China Cafe cam. A little side street in Guilin gives a pretty good flavor of what life is like there.

Don't think I've seen Brisbane before. Nice looking city.

Place Stanislas almost looks other-worldly, with the ice and the blue lights on white buildings.

Great selection as usual, Ylee!

Good evening! It was a relatively nice day, temps made it into the upper 40s, with sunshine! Now that the sun's set, the temps are dropping quickly, on it's way to the low 20s by morning!

Cams are looking well tonight; surprised to see people walking the Place Stanislas in the wee hours!

Hi, Sandi! I think you're having a lot more issues with the weather than I! You be careful, too!

Tony, Banff is probably in my top five places I want to go in Canada! Maybe some day I'll make it up there!

Rob, this blog has come a long way from the days when there was just six US cams and Milos! :')

Glad you like the new blog, Pros! I hope you are spared from the brunt of the storm!

No big vacations planned for us either, Cal! Need to concentrate on paying bills! :')

Oz, was your high today 72, or the low? A 43 degree drop in one day is crazy! Glad you're getting a break from the heat!

I'm no golfer either, ycd! Miniature golf is challenging enough for me! :')
Member Since: February 3, 2011 Posts: 86 Comments: 14565
Ylee:
I'm fairly sure I played the golf course in the lower right of the Banff Cam. Elk were everywhere putting hoof divots in the greens and chasing the girl on the drinks cart. Workers were rolling up the greens as we "played" through.
I'm not a real golfer but Daughter #2 had been working at Banff Springs Hotel that summer - we went out to bring her home and she had an employee's discount on the golf course. My first drive went into a wire cage around a small shrubbery and another whumped in to a tree and never came out. We did not keep score.

Hi Ylee
Swap some cold for our 46.5 (115.7) of yesterday!!! I must say today is a wonderful 22 (72) didn't get any rain though, which is much needed to help with the bushfires!

i was through Bbanff about 10-15 years ago. it's a spectacular place,
The BIL took us to Banff,Lake Louise and on to the Columbia Ice Field before returning his home near Red Deer.
Enjoy the day.

Take care out there... it may not be minus 16, but it is cold... and slippery!
Well, it is here, you have just edged up to 32F, whereas we are still struggling to make 27!

Love the selection of new cams :)

To all you folks fussing about the cold, it's -16F at Jackson Hole! :')

Time to go home! Be back tonight!

Thank you, Rob! Not much to see at the moment, but things will improve as the day passes!
Member Since: February 3, 2011 Posts: 86 Comments: 14565
This blog took a different turn than I envisioned it a few days' back! Ogal had tipped me on the elk cam, and my original intention was to use it as the 1st cam. However, I had the Banff cam saved back before Christmas, and when I went back to check it out, my plans changed!

The Hong Kong cams used to all be really small, too small for the blog. Recently, they upgraded, so here is one of about 17 cams that's on their site!

Take a moment to check out the Serendipity website! Man, do I ever want to call these people up and rent the place for a week! Can't afford it, though, lol!

There's more new cams than I planned, but sometimes it just works out that way! :') I'm going to try to incorporate a cam or two that was voted on in each blog; this time it was the Cafe China cam!

Sometimes I'm left to the Mercy of WU; the weathersticker for the Spindl cam has no info on it! Hopefully, they will get their weatherstation running and communicating with WU soon! Spindl is near the border with Poland, so that's why the weathersticker is from there!

It's odd, really; I'll feature a cam on here, and then someone will add to WU's webcam list.
Shaun Tanner has been systematically going through and adding almost every National Park Service cam to the WU list. WunderYakuza has added the Panama Canal cam in the last week or so(I wonder if he found it here, or on his own?), and added it to the WU list. There's a person named azer that has scoured all the Aussie cams and some Antarctic cams(over 200 so far) and put them on the WU list. The Brisbane Storm Chasers cams are an example; I had the Mcleans Ridges cams on here a couple of months ago, and now all the BSC cams are on the WU list!) I used azer's WU upload of Surfers Paradise for the blog! No glitch mode
needed for that cam! I'm not mad or anything; it's made my life easier here, as there are a lot more cams on WU, and I don't have to be at the mercy of this junk computer so much! I'm just curious as how they are doing this; it would be a lot easier on me if I could also do this!

About Ylee

I live and work in metropolitan Lewisport, KY. I like webcams, through which I can see the whole world!
