Luray, Virginia is where the headquarters of Shenandoah National Park is located. Back in the 1930s, when lands for the park were being aquired, the mountain people were bought out, some of them being given lands and homes outside of Luray. It is said that some of them moved back into the park, as they were more partial to the old way of life!

Now, as then, Luray has been connected to, and owes its lifeblood to, the Shenandoah. Hiking, camping, and fishing have brought people here for well over a hundred years!

Now, the Campbell family, which has a goat farm there, has recently expanded their operations to include tours and weddings held at their facilities! Of course, they have to show off their grounds with a fine webcam!

Howdy! As I cannot let a mystery pass me by (at least when it's late and I'm killing time ;)), I looked up the exact location of Campi ya Kanzi. Hopefully, that link will take you to the google map. If you zoom out and look to the WSW you will find Mt Kilimanjaro and at its base are farms and a couple of towns. Or follow this link to Oloitokitok, Kajiado, Kenya, which is probably responsible for the lights we see in the savannah cam at night. Looks to be a happening place :)

Good morning Ylee. Good luck with the new blog. Just put food out for the crew and its actually above freezing. I see there was another 4 legged critter earlier who made a mess eating. Jeeze can't they be nice and have proper table manners...I hate when they upset the bowl of dry kibble. What a mess.....LOL

Have a good shift dear one. Catch ya later. BTW when you see that long string of lights on the African cam, it has to be a safari traveling because villages are not stretched out but homes are huddled together for protection from the big cats etc.

Good evening! A not as chilly night tonight, then a nice warmup to 60 tomorrow!

New blog tonight, I hope! Fingers crossed, and hope for a slow night!

Hiya, ski! Good to see you around! Hope you're staying out of trouble! ;-)

Trauma, I hope you can say "Good morning, Milos!", tonight! :)

Hi, Sandi! Endangered species, indeed! Wonder how much different your classroom would look like now? :)

Wiley's keeping the Santa hat for the next month, Briar! Someday, I may have an avy for every occasion!

Yikes! It's been a bit nippy in your neighborhood lately, but now that it's put you in the Santa Spirit, looks like it's starting to warm up. Tonight's low looks to be above freezing, but I imagine your avatar will keep the festive hat for awhile, right?

I followed Bug's link to Camp Kanzi and have just spent an enjoyable half hour reading all about it. It sounds wonderful, and if I ever win the lottery I might contemplate a visit, but at €650 a day I don't think I can afford it on my pension! lol

I did read the FAQ's and laughed at this entry when answering about taking children to the camp.

Children will need to be obedient and respectful of animals.
Silence while on safari is a key to approach game.
Therefore the experience of Campi ya Kanzi is reserved to well mannered children (an endangered species
?).
Wonderful!!

Well, I guess we made it to 30K; not bad for 11 months!

Mornin', Todd!

Ycd, want to work on getting 40K? :)

Bug, don't know if you noticed or not, but there's always been a link to maasai.com, right above the cam picture! I always try to post a link to the website most relevant to the cam!

Rats.... spotting squirrels at the feeder cam is getting a bit boring.

Well, the Kanzi cam is at a safari camp: Link. So it makes sense that the cam could be aimed towards the main resort. Or maybe they have a camping area.

Just me and you should be able to get to 30G in the next few minutes. Gunther usually gets here at about 0930 (0830 just now) and we wander off to rip up someone's sundeck and replace rotting stairs.
I'd best make some breakeys

I see lights in the distance on the Kanzi cam; the fact that they are almost in the same place from night to night makes me think that they are probably camps. Not sure if they are villages or not!

Good morning! It was a bone-chilling 19F at the house this morning! At least the cold will be short-lived, as the highs for the weekend will be up in the 60s!

As seen in the post above, the Milos cam is back online! I didn't know I could miss a stone pelican that much! :) Anyone more worldly than I care to explain the Greek flags?

Tony, maybe you can have Abbey carry a cask of something that'll keep you warm! :))

Nice graphics, Tomball! We're behind in rain for the year as well, but our water table is pretty good at the moment!

Janet, to loosen your limbs, I recommend PB Blaster! :)

Alley, the fact that I'm posting over an hour later than normal ought to tell you something! :P Hopefully things will settle down later!

I need a shot of wd40 in all the major joints this morning.

All your cold weather is now heading our way, but there is warmth at the end of this tunnel. "They" say by early next week low 70's.

Stay warm & take care...

I'm sure they have some "Stop Smoking" App but I have not added any apps or music or much of anything except for the Tides of Hawaii for some unknown reason.
I'm fairly sure one has "Gotta Wanna" for any Drying Out program to work and I am not there yet. I see myself as the guy smoking with his I.V. pole and nighty just 10 meters from the doors of the Emergency Entrance after Heart and Lung (and knee and hip) transplants.
I'll likely try to add some Vodka to the drip bag.

Don't see any lights on the Kanzi cam, but the full moon has the savannah lit up!

A tablet can help one stop using alcohol and tobacco? Ycd, I didn't know they had an app for that! :)

Certainly looks like a caravan of sorts, Sandi! Maybe there was a long excursion somewhere!

Not quite cold enough for longjohns yet, Alley, but definitely an extra shirt! :)

We didn't get much rain when the front went through last night, bug! Hope you have better luck!

Sandi, I noticed that, too. I'd never seen lights there before.

Anudder squirrel at the feeder cam. Rain or nighttime on the rest.

We got rain coming in, too. Hope it drops a decent amount. Not a deluge but a good soaker. We're almost 8 inches in the hole for 2012.

Good morning! After a cold and drizzly night, we have cold and sunny skies today! Temps are supposed to make it to the low 40s today!

Cams are OK this morning; hopefully, I'll have time to do some scouting today!

GG, I thought maybe someone had walked in fron of the cam, then I remembered the billboard! Anyone care to guess what that building or whatever is in the center of the image? It looks interesting, but I have no idea!

Hi, Tony! I'm sure a rap on the ankle bone would get their attention! A lesser chance of getting arrested, too! :)

Good morning, janet! No snow here, unless we had some flurries while I was asleep!

Yup, I thought it was time to bring out "Santa wiley" for the season! :)

Because life and the real world calls, as always, Cal! I can't imagine Hilo as claustrophobic, unless it's the vegetation you speak of!

Hi, Skye! I've noticed since rainy season has started, grass is starting to grow in front of the cam! Hope they keep it mowed down!

Let's hope it was rangers, Sandi! I would think that poachers wouldn't want to be caught on a cam!

Wab, we did have some black ice on the roads this morning, but no snow! Deer have it made at the feeder cam, IMO!

ycd, I had to go check out the site you mentioned; awesome pictures! Shame none of those places are available via webcam!

I spent some time camping on the Gros Ventre river. Love that place. Bald eagles fishing, mink, beavers and a mom moose with calf. Oh and the mountains. Why did I ever leave????

The Hilo cam is familiar too. We have friends outside of Hilo and went there several years ago to visit. Pretty but a bit claustrophobic for us!

too funny about the drink of water...but I'd have to wonder about the facilities at the RV park.

wow the snow word already in your forecast! They don't usually mention it in ours until after the first of the year. However we did have snow sneak in last Christmas.

Good evening! Due to a scheduling error, I'll be here for only four hours tonight! And it was doubletime, too! :(( I'll be back on my regular schedule Tuesday. At least they can't take that away from me!

Here we are in a quandry, weather-wise! Early Tuesday morning, we have a chance of either light freezing drizzle(Paducah NWS), or up to 1/2" of snow(Louisville NWS). I reckon we'll find out in about 36 hours!

Cams look OK; only four more days until Milos is back online! New blog by Saturday morning!

Hi, Pros! Hope you've recovered from Thanksgiving! It never occured to me where (Roman)ia got its' name from! Having a town with a name of Latin origin makes sense now!

GG, I'm sure cooking Syd would be more trouble than it's worth; he would probably be tough, anyway! :)

That's great, Sandi! Kilamanjaro is always a welcome bonus on the Kanzi cam!

Hi, Tony! I'm sure the Queen has good all-season tires on her car! Or do you have snow tires?

Shore, those Luray dishes are really pretty! I wish someone still made those!

It would be neat if someone brought back Ripley's Believe it or Not! to TV again! Probably would get high ratings, especially if Professor Wishart was on!

Bug, still not a sausage to be seen, lol! I drove in Chicago once, and that was nuts, too! While I was rubbernecking at the skyscrapers, I had a cabbie threaten me! Aren't big cities cool? :)

Hi, janet! I went to Mammoth Cave this summer! On the tour we were in, there was a stream of water flowing from a spot in the ceiling to a pit below. The Ranger said someone once asked if they sould get a drink from that stream, and he replied that since the RV park was directly overhead, he didn't think that was a good idea! :) I'd like to go to Carlsbad someday!

Trauma, I'm here till 11, and then I'm out!

Someone on the blogs needs to win Powerball so that we can all go to Hawaii! :)

Hi, Rob! I can believe five degrees of separation between David Bowie and Metallica, but only one click to the Cranberries? Who did the programming at utube, anyway, and did they later get a job at WU? :)

Yeah, caught you Bowie reference, but didn't assume a connection to the blog. Just for kicks I loaded "This is not America" in Youtube and proceeded to click related videos. 5 clicks took me to Metallica - Nothing else matters. One more click and I was in a Cranberries list. Much happier place! :o)

Catch ya later Ylee!

Happy sunday..its been mighty cool here today. Last night was freezing.
I have the night off from the stove tonight. Max said he wasn't hungry and would probably settle for a sandwich later, no protesting from me!
I do not remember ever going to Luray Caverns. We haved been in Mammoth and Carlsbad Caverns. I honestly thought the Luray caverns had "died" because of mistreatment in it early years of being opened and people not being careful of touching stuff. Carlsbad was a great cavern. We, of course, stayed to watch the great exodus of the bats.

Pros, the Snow monkeys are still there. Just go into the Septembe blog and scroll down. I watched them last evening. Such a crowd around them too. One lady was, in my opinion, much to close to one of the monkeys.

take care....
