Today's Western society is largely consumer driven; people want things, lots of things, and they want it as cheap as possible. Malls, supermarkets, discount chains, and even online retailers, have made shopping mostly efficient and relatively inexpensive, due to sheer economics of scale.

But it didn't used to be that way. Folks who now collect Social Security used to remember a simpler time, when family owned businesses were the norm. Giant corporations squeezed out the vast majority of these mom-and-pop operations, and we are all poorer for it. You could take a short drive or even walk to the local grocer or bookstore, and odds were the owner knew your name, knew what you liked, and threw in a little extra something, just because they appreciated your business. Nowadays, more often than not, you'll run into someone making minimum wage, that has no stake in the business, and couldn't care less if you never came back. Others(me included) make a few clicks and wait for the truck to show up a few days later.

But even now, there still are exceptions. For example, even though most family owned bookstores have gone the way of the dodo, there's still a few out there making a go of it. The one in Maine who owns the cam featured in this blog has gone through the trouble to put their web address on a roof in full cam view! Of course, in China, neighborhood markets are the norm, as well as in Europe, where the city squares still attract vendors with carts selling their wares.

G'Morning. Zebras and flowers in the square, it's a beautiful day on the world cams. One question; on the China cam, anyone know where they found a striped bedsheet that large?
Could be the Asian version of blue tarps or visqueen. I like it. Much more cheery after a disaster.

Cal, all I can say is pppppptht! :)

Shore, you'd have to get up early if you want to see any coons; my experience has them appearing most often about 3AM, although they have appeared at almost anytime, day or night! Come to think of it, it has been a while since I've seen one!

Gotta go find an East Hemisphere cam for the blog; BBL!

Evening, Ylee,

Sure do like that new avatar. I think it's maybe not that new, but it's nice. I stopped by on my nightly hunt for a raccoon at the feeder cam, but still no luck. Has anyone ever seen one? I can't believe they aren't around - maybe we're just missing them. I know they eat corn - that's not the problem. Who knows? Maybe they've all moved to the suburbs, where the living is easy!

I don't know if I'll get it done, but I'm way too proud of myself for getting started on a CD of my favorite travel music for this week. I found a great youtube-to-mp3 converter, and have a few done already. Now all I have to do is get an audio cd or dvd - whatever - and burn the music to it. One step at a time. But I found The Flatlanders' version of White Freightliner - I think it ought to do very well for the Oklahoma turnpike! The best thing about traveling alone is I can turn up the music as loud as I want - and now that I've got a good sound system, I intend to enjoy it!

Hope your evening goes fast. Be back later to look for the raccoons. ;)

Good morning Ylee. thought I would drop by before I head back to bed. The old lady is ready to try to sleep again...LOL Kitties are fed, early morning meds taken along with a few crackers/peanut butter and a cup of coffee.

Pretty quiet cam night. Not a whole lot going on. I notice that even the Canal cams are showing a slowdown in the number of ships travelling through. I guess its just a sign of the coming winter months.

Hope your shift is going well. Another couple of hours then you will be starting that weary drive home. Have a good rest and catch ya on the flip flop.

I thought it was just business as usual on the China Cafe cam but now that you mention it I see a sheet on the street level where there once was a store front.
Someday we hope to see through the big 'scope on Mt. Wilson.

Good evening! I guess everybody missed the big fire at the China Cafe cam! :( It looks like several shops have sustained heavy damage! People are cleaning out one of the shops; the others have their doors closed, but you can see the damage on the floors above!

Wilson cam shows a layer of clouds below the observatory. Akitio is still down. After catching up on the blogs, I'll start working on the new blog; hopefully, I'll get it done by tomorrow night!

Happy Saturday, Sandi!

Hi, Tony! Hope you had good luck on your project!

Good morning YLee.
I've always told the Queen it's quicker to put something away than looking for it if you didn't.
My problem now is that I'll put something down while still using it and forget where I put it down. Yesterday I was using an Xacto knife and lost track of it. It took me 2 hour to find it.
Enjoy the day.

Welcome to the blog, Ron! I have a couple of places,in addition to WU, to scan for webcams for this blog! The site where I found this particular cam is Webcam Galore! They have several thousand in their listings. The thing I like about this website is that they have their cams placed on Google maps, with locations of other nearby cams!

Morning Ylee:
We got the desktop up and running last night. Hopefully a comment will take less time to generate and not disappear into the ozone like a few I've tried to post from the iPod. The Canoe cam is interesting to me for a number of reasons - not just that I like workshops and boats. I took a photo in the shop I use but I don't think WU will let me post an inside photo. It was a poor image anyway.
Akitio does not seem to be updating lately.

Good morning! A cool and damp day is forecast here, a 50% chance of showers, and a high only making it to the mid 50s! It would have been a good day to stay in bed! :)

The canoe cam is showing a different angle this morning; it's now showing the canoe lengthwise, from a vantage point in the rafters. Be it multiple cameras that the owner switches from time to time, or that he moves it as he sees fit, the gentleman deserves a hearty "well done"!

More rain on the savannah; I'd say rainy season is here! Wilson cam is showing a pretty predawn sky!

Rob, cane season has just about pooped out, so all the caneheads are just about done with the site! Maybe we'll get a few semi-regulars back, starting after Thanksgiving!

Trauma, my gardening is done for this year; the frost-killed tomatoes were mowed down last week! I remember the wiki article of Milos from my volcano blog a couple of months ago; I'm sure you saw the map of Milos I used!

Good morning, Tony! Around here, what Walmart hasn't put out of business, Dollar General stores have finished off, putting a lot of compact stores filled with cheap merchandise in local neighborhoods!

Mornin', some of our trees are starting to show some color, the dogwoods and maples mostly.
I was doing your world tour by the month last evening and noticed how colorful D.C was showing and the Smokies and our NC mountains starting also.

This morning it looks rather breezy on Milos, the China Street is the busiest I think as ever I have seen and a different view from the canoe shop. I like how they move around to different areas.

Was reading about the Mom & Pop stores, we still have quite a few of them here. I think it is because they think it will help our images as a tourist destination.??
Most of them are too expensive for the locals :-(
Probably why so many of them have gone out of business elswhere. They try to make a killing instead of a living.

Hope your day goes well for you.

The big corporations are definitely taking over. I remember when there was 4 small family owned corner grocery stores within a mile of my home. I think there's only 2 left in the whole city.

From Wikipedia: Milos is the southwesternmost island in the Cyclades, 120 km (75 mi) due east from the coast of Laconia. From east to west it measures about 23 km (14 mi), from north to south 13 km (8.1 mi), and its area is estimated at 151 km² (58.3 mi²). The greater portion is rugged and hilly, culminating in Mount Profitis Elias 748 m (2,454 ft) in the west. Like the rest of the cluster, the island is of volcanic origin, with tuff, trachyte and obsidian among its ordinary rocks. The natural harbour is the hollow of the principal crater, which, with a depth diminishing from 70 to 30 fathoms (130–55 m), strikes in from the northwest so as to separate the island into two fairly equal portions (see photo), with an isthmus not more than 18 km (11 mi) broad. In one of the caves on the south coast, the heat from the volcano is still great, and on the eastern shore of the harbour, there are hot sulphurous springs.

Good morning Milos!!

I am back! :)) Spent three days doing home improvement, and now I'm back here, ready for some rest, lol! I finished before the storms last night; nothing severe, just some wind, rain, and lightning!

Cams look in fine shape this morning. Canoe cam is back to running again; I'm always impressed by the craftsmanship of the owner! Looks like it's been raining on the savannah!

It's due for a new blog, but I won't do any scouting until tomorrow, as I'm spending today catching up on all the blogs!

Hi, Janet! I wish that was my hiding spot, lol! If it was, I'd make sure that hinge was fixed! :)

Didn't know of an earthquake in the NE; I'll have to check it out when I get a chance!

Bug, maybe my next blog will have a more "noon EDT action oriented" flavor! :) We'll see!

Sandi, so good to see you back here! Not much enjoyment while I was off; a consequence of working a lot of hours is that home chores builds up, and I'm too cheap to hire a handyman to do them, so there you go! :)

Hi, Trauma! I'm sure you're already done for the week; your work around the house done? I still have a few days of fall work yet to do!

Sp, lucky you! The main mountain on the savannah cam is none other than Mt. Kilamanjaro, which was why the cam was put in the volcano blog a few months back! I've never seen people there, either. Maasai, perhaps?

Hi, GG! The China cam's fun because there's something to see for almost the whole 24 hours of the day! I like the lights at night!

Hi, Alley! Thanks for the update on the canal cam! It'll be back at some point, but I have no clue when! :) The major project for this fall is done, but there's still quite a bit to do before Christmas decorations are put up after Thanksgiving!

Hi, wab! I had to check out your new avatar; all I can say is that sometimes it's more fun to open your mouth and make a fool of yourself than it is to say nothing and be a lump! :)
