Today's Western society is largely consumer driven; people want things, lots of things, and they want it as cheap as possible. Malls, supermarkets, discount chains, and even online retailers, have made shopping mostly efficient and relatively inexpensive, due to sheer economics of scale.

But it didn't used to be that way. Folks who now collect Social Security used to remember a simpler time, when family owned businesses were the norm. Giant corporations squeezed out the vast majority of these mom-and-pop operations, and we are all poorer for it. You could take a short drive or even walk to the local grocer or bookstore, and odds were the owner knew your name, knew what you liked, and threw in a little extra something, just because they appreciated your business. Nowadays, more often than not, you'll run into someone making minimum wage, that has no stake in the business, and couldn't care less if you never came back. Others(me included) make a few clicks and wait for the truck to show up a few days later.

But even now, there still are exceptions. For example, even though most family owned bookstores have gone the way of the dodo, there's still a few out there making a go of it. The one in Maine who owns the cam featured in this blog has gone through the trouble to put their web address on a roof in full cam view! Of course, in China, neighborhood markets are the norm, as well as in Europe, where the city squares still attract vendors with carts selling their wares.

Nice morning at Akitio!

GG, I think Roxie would like the canoe cam; I think I saw a golden retriever in there!

Canoe Shop is a great addition. Rules, shmules, if it's a great cam, fits the theme, pile 'em on.

The canoe builder has canine supervision! :)

Big rain clouds over the savannah; must be the beginning of rainy season!

Awesome sunset in Milos!

Scaffolding truck has moved on; maybe no Octoberfest this weekend, after all! :(

Cams are showing a lot today!

Good morning! A cloudy and cool start to the day; supposed only to make 60 for a high, then around freezing for a low tonight!

Cams are looking well; yesterday morning before I went home, I put the canoe cam in the lineup. I wanted to put it in in the beginning, but that would break my self-imposed limit of 10 cams on the blog, so I originally left it out. I reconsidered after a day or two, because it fits the mom and pop shop theme so well!

There appears to be a fire on the savannah! I hope it's just a small one!

The canoe cam changes views from time to time, and it's neat to see all the canoes in various stages of finish!

Mt. Wilson is shrouded in fog this morning!

Good morning, Janet! I would imagine 40s is plenty cool for you this time of year! Octoberfest at the Bensheim cam would be cool! Maybe they'll have an "Oompah oompah" band on the stage! :)

Hi, Rob! Ther's some serious craftmanship going on at Northwoods Canoe! I wish I had half their skillset!(And tools, lol!)

Hi, Cal! I love that stereo system they have in the center of the shop! It has a teak? finish, very 1969! :)

Glad you got to see some critters, Wab! Hopefully we'll see some migrating herds on the Kanzi cam in the next couple of months!

Good morning, Tony! Good to see the eskimos turned their fans off! :)

I wonder if we're going to see some Octoberfest in Germany. Looks as if they are getting ready for something to happen in the square. Should be interesting.

Was wondering about that myself.
Trucks full of scaffolding.
A stage maybe.

Good morning YLee.
It looks like we're getting brief reprieve from the cool northern flow of air. The weekend temps are going to be near 60F on the weekend.
Have a good evening.

I got to hit these blogs at the right time, no zebras, no customers in the hi-fi store, but beautiful sunset on the BVI cam!!

I remember when my parents got a Hi-Fi, it was a big deal.

The canoe shop was a neat addition!
Member Since: Posts: Comments:
The BVI cam probably uses the closest weather info which may well be St. Thomas.

Like the canoe shop cam. They have a nice web site too. Haven't watched it yet, but there is a link there to web cam and that page has a link to a daily time lapse.

Like the new canoe cam, should be interesting to watch.
Noticed they have rearranged the furniture is the HiFi shop and lots of people strolling the China street this morning (evening).

We have cooled a bit but not as much as over your way. We are to hit 40's later into the week.

see ya tomorrow..

Good morning, have I mentioned this is my favorite set of cams so far? Great stuff at 4am :-D

The folks manning the German market have pluck, as they are operating business as usual under less than ideal conditions!

I think the Hi-Fi place would be a cool place to hang out; cheesy furniture, giant speakers, turntables, and more vinyl LPs than you can shake a stick at! :)

Hi ycd, the days are getting longer at Akitio, so we'll have more opportunities to see the boats!

Hi Alley, have you tried the other cams at the Canal? I think there are three or four of them!
Member Since: February 3, 2011 Posts: 86 Comments: 14570
Ylee, I think it could have been a weather issue that caused a number of ships to appear to go through the locks at the same time unless there was a breakdown somewhere along the canal system causing them to bunch up like that. Anyway the got them all through and on their way. Just took a while. Kept them scrambling for a good two hours sorting things out. Going to slip over now and see how they are doing. They had a good afternoon and everything looked to be running smoothly.

Good evening! Last night! Yippee! :) It's a clear and rapidly cooling night so far, temps dropping seven degrees in two hours! Probably will get some frost tonight!

The cams are in fine form, which is a relief, since I'm in my regular spot on OT, and I can now see them all! :) Boats should be coming in at Akitio in the next couple of hours! Nice evening in California, too! We'll see how tenacious the Germans are in a few hours, as presently it's cold and rainy there!

Pros, all does look well, a least where the cams are!

A month in China? I'm sure a trip of that magnitude would have the occasional hiccup, no matter how professional the tour operators are!

Alley, you would think that those ships already know what order to pass the locks! Maybe there was a language issue between the lock operator and the captain of one of the boats.

Briar, I have no idea why they would call it that! Per wikipedia:
Cooper Island WikiMiniAtlas18°23′09″N 64°30′42″W / 18.3859°N 64.5118°W / 18.3859; -64.5118Coordinates: 18°23′09″N 64°30′42″W / 18.3859°N 64.5118°W / 18.3859; -64.5118 is a small island of the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. There are five privately owned properties on the island, plus a small beach club resort.

The island lies adjacent to "wreck alley", a popular wreck diving site in the British Virgin Islands where a number of vessels have been deliberately sunk as dive sites. A local dive store near the beach club rents tanks to certified scuba divers.

From the Villa website:

The house at Quart-A-Nancy Point is one of only a few private homes on Cooper Island. It was built in the 1960s and 70s as an artist's retreat. The construction is concrete, concrete block, and native stone.

Beats me! :)

Thank you for your kind compliments! I will keep on keeping on, as long as I am able!
Member Since: February 3, 2011 Posts: 86 Comments: 14570
Well, I have to wonder what folks are like in the Virgin Islands. Where'd they come up with a Quart-a-Nancy? Somehow, that just doesn't sound very nice. But the view sure is. Nice, that is.

I do like your theme, too. I'm proud to say I haven't set foot in a Walmart in over two years now. Like you, I do admit to making a few clicks and waiting for the truck to show up. Then again, if I can find it locally (like within 30 miles or so) I'll buy it and don't even mind if it costs 50 cents more than some big box store might charge. And happily, I've found that the big box stores aren't always cheapest anyway, or don't sell the same quality as the mom-and-pop. Okay, 'nough said.

You're doing good, Ylee. Keep on keepin' on!

Another big cruise ship going through the locks again The Norwegian Pearl, this time. There was a bit of a traffic jam last night at the locks, don't know how they managed it but they had about 4 large container ships and a couple of cargo ships waiting to pass through at the same time. It took a while but they got them all through. Busy busy busy.

Anyway have a great day.

Good morning.

Lots of sailboats at the Beef Island, several deer at the feeding station, the market in Guilin is teeming with millions of people (as usual), the Japanese camera is deserted and orderly, zebras are hanging around the watering hole. The world is as it should be.

Have a wonderful day.

ADD: I just read back. Yes, we have been to Guilin, about five years ago we spent over a month in China. We were with a tour and it was a very interesting trip, lots of ups and some downs.

Good evening! It's already 45 outside, and it's only 9PM! Probably wind up scraping frost off the windshield before I go home in the morning!

Once again, I'm only able to see Milos, Akitio, and the feeder cam; not much to report there, except that Milos has it's own weathersticker, instead of using the one at Santorini Island!

Happy Thanksgiving, Alley! Nice capture! Looks like another Princess Cruise Lines ship!

Bug, all I can say is a couple of gallons of glyphosphate and a two gallon sprayer will cure all your landscaping problems, lol!

I'm getting kinda pooped myself; after tomorrow night's shift ends Tuesday morning, I will have worked 96 hours in 7 days. 12 hr. shifts aren't too bad, but 16 hrs. a day gives me a classic case of dragon azz. :)

Actually, Hubby could probably use a young yard man, not necessarily a handsome one, though.

We'd have to rob a bank for the extra cash to hire one.
Member Since: October 7, 2005 Posts: 229 Comments: 24576
Lotsa folks on the street in the bookstore cam. All the rest seem fairly quiet.

No deer at the feeder cam. There's a little round something. Squirrel? Wabit? I can't tell.

I dug two holes to plant two plants this morning and now I feel like I'm about 150 years old. I ache from head to foot.

I need a husky, handsome young yard man but I don't think Hubby will let me have one, though. Rats.....
Member Since: October 7, 2005 Posts: 229 Comments: 24576
Good morning Ylee. A cool morning but with the furnace it sure helps to get rid of the aches. Thank goodness for archives in here where I can go and visit those cams I miss in this group. My favorite so far is of the Panama Canal locks and yes I had to go and get my fix. Thought I would share what I saw this morning...

Gotta love this cam.

Good evening! Cloudy and chilly night so far; they are calling for a slight chance of rain, then another cooldown to the low 30s tomorrow night!

I can see the three non-glitch cams; the other seven are showing a red x, as I'm not on my normal computer!

Hey, Trauma! Is this your last night? I still have two more nights to go after tonight!

Wab, I think you're getting a head start on this cold business! It was 39 here this morning, but it'll be colder by tomorrow night!

Wow, Pros, you've been to Guilin? It never ceases to amaze me when I put up a cam from some exotic location, only to have a WUer share a personal association or memory of it! I would imagine you being American had to do with the young ladies' persistence!

Cal, day on, day off, day on, ect. I would need a calendar, lol! Are the extra days not in a row OT? That would make sense to me! SP tipped me about the Mt. Wilson cam; this was the first chance for me to use it!

Hi, Alley! When I'm working mega hours, pacing is everything. When I get tired, I'll tell the supervisors no when they ask to stay or come in. It's not too bad at the moment, but I imagine I'll be wearing a jacket when I leave in the morning!]

Bug, sometimes when I see a cam, I'll think "So and so would like that one.". I thought you would like the bookstore cam! A lot of your blogs have centered around the English language and literature, soo I figured it would be a natural fit!

Have you tried online sources for adding to your book collection? I'm sure you could find almost everything you could want!

GG, I don't like the do-it-yourself checkout lines, either. I really don't get them, anyway, since they all have someone there to help you scan your stuff, anyway.

We have a small grocer in Owensboro that caters to lower income families. At the beginning of the month, when folks get their food stamp vouchers, they have amazing deals on meat, even cheaper than Sam's Club! Whole ribeyes for $6 a pound? Oh, yeah! :)
Member Since: February 3, 2011 Posts: 86 Comments: 14570
Hooray for surviving indie bookstores! I may order something from them.
It's important to support the mom-n-pop shops. Even at the big box places using the people check out line as opposed to the scan it yourself line can make a difference in saving jobs.

We don't have anything in the way of indie grocers around here. We do have some mom-n-pop restaurants and bakeries that I make a habit of going to.

Good blog topic!

DEER!!!!! Four of 'em. No buck, tho.

Lots of good people watching cams this time, Ylee.

That Cooper Island cam has a FABULOUS view!

Speaking of bookstores, my favorite used book store closed over 5 years ago. Altantic Books, which was on King St. downtown. A long, narrow shop, filled to the brim with books! Bookshelves everywhere and all kinds of nooks and crannies to get lost in. I bought a number of books there. Wish I'd gotten more. I notice that places like Barnes & Noble tend to carry too many soft backs. When I buy a book, I want a hardback. They last longer. I only buy books that I will read over and over again. Classics.

Atlantic Books had a lot of Agatha Christie's in hardback. It looked like they had all been published by the same house as a series. I could kick myself for not buying them all.

Also an Edward Gorey alphabet book. Dang, I wish I'd bought it! LOL

I did get a great Annotated Sherlock Holmes set. An Annotated Alice in Wonderland. Some children's books, mostly E. Nesbit. I do love classic children's books.

I also found a replacement for a book I'd loaned to someone and never got back: Gnomes. Mama had given me that one year for Christmas, when I was in my early 20's. It's really cool!

Safari cam is back, THANKS! The Maine cam is beautiful, and the Mount Wilson cam is sorta in my neck of the woods.

One more day at work then off one then back one then off one then work four! By November I should be off 3 work 4, can't wait!

Neat theme!

Neat choice of cams and so glad that it is NOT Walmart! I like the Guilin cam, simply because I have been at that market. Very interesting and very 'challenging'. The vendors are so insistent that you eventually give in a buy something just to get rid of them. One of them followed us almost to our hotel in her effort to sell us something. We finally ended the game by buying her T-shirt! No we did not need another one but it was time to reward perseverance!

By the way Guilin with her mountains and river are absolutely beautiful! So beautiful that the natural beauty of the area is the subject of Chinese landscapes, current and past.

Well, nice choice of cams and thank you for bringing the feeding station back. And a particular thank you for bringing back the watering hole, can't wait to see the Zebras, etc.

I live and work in metropolitan Lewisport, KY. I like webcams, through which I can see the whole world!
