George Washington: First President of the United States: A Short Biography

George Washington was born on February 22nd, 1732 to Augustine Washington and Mary Ball Washington. His education was a very short one, because his primary education ended after his father died in 1743. At the time of his father’s death, he was 11 years old. Washington did not receive a college education, however, he did believe strongly in formal education. After Washington died, he left money to three different college institutions.
During his life, he had many professions. He served in the Military from 1752 – 1758 (Militia), 1775 – 1783 (Continental Army), and from 1798 – 1799 (US Army). He was given the ranks of Lieutenant general and General of the Armies. Washington served in the French and Indian War and the American Revolutionary War. From these wars, he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal and the Thanks of Congress awards for his Military service. Washington also was a Farmer and a Surveyor. Washington lived and farmed at his home at Mt. Vernon, on the banks of the Potomac River.
Washington was the first President of the newly formed United States of America. He set the benchmarks and established what presidents did. He was in office from April 30th – 1789 to March 4th, 1797. Washington served 2 terms as president. His Vice – President was John Adams, who also became president later in his life. Washington’s presidency was a unique one, due to the fact that he was elected unanimously for his first term. During his time as president, he set the standards for all future presidents.
George Washington died on December 14th, 1799. He died after being sick for 2 days with a sore throat and fever. His last words in his diary were “Tis well”. After his death, his wife, Martha Washington, burned all of the couple’s correspondence. In his will, George Washington stated that the slaves he owned were to be freed. George Washington was truly a remarkable man.
