Hurricane Sandy totaly dwarfs Hurricane Irene of 2011 in intensity (on landfall) and size. Hurricane Sandy was a Category 1 hurricane with 90mph winds on landfall, with a minimum pressure of 940mb. Hurricane Sandy was 900+ miles wide. Sandy's maximum sustained wind was 110mph, right before she made landfall in Cuba.
Hurricane Irene
In comparison, Hurricane Irene was a Category 1 hurricane on landfall with 85mph winds when she made landfall on North Carolina's Outer Banks. Hurricane Irene was 700-775 miles wide. Hurricane Irene had a minimum pressure of 943mb when she reached peak strength of 125mph of the coast of Florida.
These two "Superstorms" both were intense storms that cause billions of U.S. dollars of damage to the North Eastern states. These storms also allow for the U.S to prepare for more "Superstorms" in the future.
