The Lake Breeze / January 16, 2008

Forecast Discussion for Southern Michigan...

=========================================================

Near Term

After morning lows around 10 degrees this morning away from the Lakes
highs today should reach the lower 30s, breaking freezing in most
locations for what could be the last time in a while. Fair weather will
prevail, with a flurry or two possible near the lakeshore. Tonight's
weather will feature increasing clouds, but dry weather. Lows tonight
should stay above 20 F.

===========================================================

Short Term

A clipper will move north through the eastern Plains on Thursday,
bringing light snow to southern Michigan. The snow will start in the early
afternoon in SW Michigan, and by evening in SE michigan. The most
persistent snow will be NW of a Holland to Midland line, where 2-4 inches
is expected. South of that line 1-2 inches could fall, with the lesser
amounts near the Ohio border. The snow will taper off by late thursday
night as the arctic front passes through. Highs on Thursday will top out
near 30 degrees. Lake effect snow showers will start up on Friday, but
will fail to get organized. Thus only light accumulations are expected
through Saturday morning. Generally 1 - 3 inches west of Battle Creek,
with less than an inch to the east. Temperatures on Friday will be falling
throughout the day, with mid 20s expected during the morning hours and
upper 10s by late evening.

==========================================================

Long Term

Lake effect snow showers will be on the increase Saturday, and winds
will be gusty. Temperatures will be brutal, with highs strugling to make it
out of the single digits, with highs topping out in the lower 10s. Lake
effect snow showers will be heavy in the western part of the state, where
over 8 inches is possible. East of Lansing snowfall should range
between 1-4 inches. Lows Saturday night will dip below freezing in area
away from the lakeshore. Sunday will feature more cold and snowy
weather, with highs topping out around 10 F and snow showers leaving
1-2 inches of accumulation for most of the area, with the exception being
west of Battle Creek, where 2 - 6 with locally 12 inches could fall. Snow
showers will contiune through next week, with minor accumlations each
day. Highs should remain cold, with tempertures as high as 20 F possible
by midweek. Lows will fall below zero a few nights, when skies clear.

===========================================================

Extended Forecast

The extended forecast looks cold and snowy with a few synoptic snows
possible next week as well as light lake effect snow accumulations each
day. Highs will not reach 30 F, and lows will be near or below zero, a true
arctic outbreak indeed.

The Lake Breeze / January 15, 2008

Forecast Discussion for Southern Lower Michigan

=========================================================

Short Term

Snow showers will continue though early Tuesday morning, before tapering off to light snow showers and flurries. Overnight accumulation of 1-2 inches is expected across most all of southern Michigan north of I-94, south of there, less than an inch is expected. locally up to 3 or 4 inches if possible west of US-131 and around Howell and Flint, where the heaviest and most persistent bands are currently.

=========================================================

Long Term

After a lull in any precipitation through Thursday, aside from a few snow showers, a clipper looks to move through the area Thursday night into Friday. This storm will usher in much colder air to southern Michigan and with it heavy and widespread lake effect snow. The clipper itself will be moisture-starved and only produce at best a few inches of snow. The lake effect snow following the storm will could reach 2 feet or more in SW Michigan, with lower accumulations elsewhere, and much lower accumulations in far SE Michigan.

==========================================================

Extended Outlook

The cold arctic air plans on sticking around for a while, at least through the forth week of January. This cold pattern will set the stage for a much snowier and colder pattern, with temperatures returning to normal and below normal.

===========================================================

My Forecast for -

WASHTENAW COUTY / JACKSON COUNTY / LIVINGSTON COUNTY / INGHAM COUNTY / LENAWAE COUNTY / HILLSDALE COUNTY

Monday Night - snow showers and breezy, accumulation of 1 - 3 inches north of Ann Arbor, with around an inch to the south, low of 21 F

*Lake Effect Snow*
Posted by: Winterstormsblog, 1:05 PM GMT on January 13, 2008 +0
The Lake Breeze / January 13, 2008

==========================================================

Near Term

A weak low pressure system will move northeast through southern Michigan today bringing light snow and rain to the lower Pennisula. Most of this precip will be light in Southern Michigan, although a burst of moderate to perhaps heavy wet snow is possible this morning. Accumulations should stay under a half inch south of I-96, with up to an inch north of that. Highs today should once again climb above average, with temps peaking in the middle 30's. Tonight some more light snow is possible, with any accumulations under an inch, with the most likely area of seeing any accumlation west of Jackson.

========================================================

Short Term

Lake effect snow will begin on Monday as a weak storm slowy moves northeast and out of southwest Ontario. Snow accumulations of up to an inch are possible southwest of Ann Arbor monday morning, as well as in the Thumb, where around an inch is expected. Snow showers will eventually affect all of southern Michigan on Monday and become even more widespread by Monday evening. Total Lake effect snow accumulations through Tuesday morning are expected to range from half an inch to 3 inches, with the highest amounts expected north of I-96, where a weak disturbance will enhance snowfall for a period of time Monday night.

=========================================================

Long Term

After a lull in any precipatation through Thursday, aside from a few snow showers, a clipper looks to move through the area Thursday night into Friday. This storm will usher in much colder air to southern Michigan and with it heavy and widespread lake effect snow. The clipper itself will be moisture-starved and only produce at best a few inches of snow. The lake effect snow following the storm will could rech 2 feet or more in SW Michigan, with lower accumulations elsewhere, and much lower accumulations in far SE Michigan.

==========================================================

Extended Outlook

The cold arctic air plans on sticking around for a while, at least through the forth week of January. This cold pattern will set the stage for a much snowier and colder pattern, with temperatures returning to normal and below normal.

===========================================================

My Forecast for -

WASHTENAW COUTY / JACKSON COUNTY / LIVINGSTON COUNTY / INGHAM COUNTY / LENAWAE COUNTY / HILLSDALE COUNTY

Sunday - scattered rain and wet snow showers, wet snow could accumulate up to an inch west of Chelsea, high of 38 F

Sunday Night - rain and snow showers in the evening, scattered snow showers overnight, accumulations of around an inch SW of Mannchester, low of 27 F

Monday Night - snow showers and breezy, accumulation of around an inch, low of 24 F

Tuesday - snow showers, ending by afternoon east of Jackson, accumulation around an inch west of Jackson, with less than an inch to the east, high of 29 F, low of 18 F

Wednesday - Partly cloudy with a scattered snow shower possible, high of 33 F, low of 24 F

First Ever Snow in Baghdad
Posted by: Winterstormsblog, 4:55 PM GMT on January 11, 2008 +0
Snow fell for the frist time in recorded history in Baghdad, Iraq Friday Morning....

Some locals were interviewed....

"For the first time in my life I saw a snow-rain like this falling in Baghdad," said Mohammed Abdul-Hussein, a 63-year-old retiree from the New Baghdad area.

"I asked my mother, who is 80, whether she'd ever seen snow in Iraq before, and her answer was no," said Fawzi Karim, a 40-year-old father of five who runs a small restaurant in Hawr Rajab, a village six miles southeast of Baghdad.

"I rushed quickly to the balcony to see a very beautiful scene," he said. "I tried to film it with my cell phone camera. This scene has really brought me joy. I called my other friends and the morning turned to be a very happy one in my life."

Rain/Snow on Thursday Night
Posted by: Winterstormsblog, 6:05 PM GMT on January 09, 2008 +0
The Lake Breeze, January 9 2008

Rain and snow will effect Southeast Mighigan on Thursday night and Friday. Behind this storm, colder air will work it's way southward and the weekend will bring back to normal winter weather by michigan standards with some snow showers possible.

===========================================================

WEATHER FORECAST FOR SOUTHERN LOWER MICHIGAN

Near Term

Fair weather will continue into Thursday afternoon before things start to go downhill. The winds will subside late this morning and the sun will come out. Temperatures could reach the lower 40's south of I-69. Overnight lows will dip into the 20's, with partly cloudy skies. On Thursday clouds will increase as temperatures rise to around 40 and precip begisn to move in from the west. By Thursday evening light rain should be falling across most of SE Michigan, although snow is possible north of Flint.

==========================================================

Short Term

Beyond Thursday forecast looks to remain stormy, with the first storm approaching Thursday Night. The models are still in diagreement with the strength and amount of cold air with this storm. The most likely path will be up through northwest Ohio and into southwest Ontario. This means a rain and snow mix for most of southern Michigan. At this time it appears a swath of 4-7 inches is likely from Muskegan - Saginaw - Bad Axe. Snowfall amounts will be less on either side of this line. Grand Rapids, Flint, and Holland can expect 2-4 inches, while Detroit, Warren, and Ann Arbor should see lesser amounts, with less than an inch expected. Areas to the northwest of the heaviest swath, including Big Rapids, Grayling, and West branch should see 3-5 inches. The snow will mix with rain southeast of a Kalamazoo - Lansing - Flint line through most of the night Thursday, this will limit accumulations in this area. However, if more cold air is available with this storm, amounts would be higher in this area. The snow should be winding down by Friday afternoon, and snow showers lingering throughout the weekend.

===========================================================

Long Term

The pattern then looks to change to a colder, and more snowier pattern, with each storm ushering in colder air than the last. The first storm that will effect the southeast Michigan will come on Monday, this storm should bring mainly snow to the area, and it should be on the light side. Another storm is possible by midweek, a clipper storm. At this time the heaviest snow from this clipper should remain to the west of southeast Michigan.
===========================================================

Extended Outlook

As we get into the third week of January, arctic air should be settling into place in the Great Lakes. A rather stormy pattern will continue, thus snow will continue to fall.

Weather Outlook for Southeast Michigan
Posted by: Winterstormsblog, 3:27 PM GMT on January 07, 2008 +0
The Lake Breeze, January 8 2008

Flood watches and Wind advisories area in effect for much of Southeast Michigan for Tuesday into Wednesday morning.

===========================================================

WEATHER FORECAST FOR SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN

Near Term

Rain with scattered thunderstorms will persist throughout the day with total storm rainfall amounts of 1.50 - 3.50 inches by Wednesday morning. Localized flooding is possible, and all rivers should be running high. Winds will increase Tuesday afternoon to 25 - 30 mph with gust to 40 mph. By later Tuesday night and Wednesday morning these winds could gust to 50 mph. Temperatures will rapidly fall on Tuesday night, with snow showers and flurries possible by early wednesday morning, no accumulation is expected. Highs on Wednesday should top out in the upper thirties, but combined with the strong winds, it will be a sharp contrast from Tuesday, for it will feel up to 50 degrees colder.

==========================================================

Short Term

Beyond Wednesday the forecast looks to remain stormy, with the first storm approaching Thursday evening. The models are very much in diagreement with the placement, strength, and amount of cold air with this storm. The most likely path will be up through northwest Ohio and into southwest Ontario. This means a rain and snow mix for most of southest Michigan. Areas near the Ohio border should see the least amount of snow accumulation, while areas north of a Jackson to Port Huron line reciveing the most snowfall. Snowfall amounts will taper off to the far north, with areas north and west of Alma seeing lighter amounts.

===========================================================

Long Term

At this time it appears a swath of 3-6 inches is likely from Jackson - Lansing - Flint - Bad Axe. Snowfall amounts will be less on either side of this line. Ann Arbor, Adrian, and Brighton can expect 2-4 inches, while Detorit, Warren, and Flat Rock should see lesser amounts, somewhere in the 1-3 inch range. Monroe county should once again receive the least amount of snow, with around an inch or two possible. Areas to the west, including Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, and West branch should see 2-4 inches. The snow will mix with rain southeast of a Hillsdale - Howell - Port Huron line through most of the night Thursday, this will limit accumulations in this area. However, if more cold air is available with this storm, amounts would be higher in this area. The snow should be winding down by Friday afternoon, and snow showers lingering throughout the weekend.

===========================================================

Extended Outlook

The pattern then looks to change to a colder, and more snowier pattern, with each storm ushering in colder air than the last. This should continue for the rest of the month, So enjoy the 60 F weather while you can!
