A short progress report.

The wireless portion of the remote temperature sensor is working. It's definitely still a prototype, but it's passing along sensible data mostly reliably.

Using an ATtiny13 and a DS18B20 with a transmitter/receiver pair operating roughly on 315Mhz. It's currently powered by four AA batteries, but I plan on using a solar panel and rechargeable battery for a more permanent solution.

Have a few software things to work out as well, mainly putting the ATtiny in a sleep mode rather than busy waiting to conserve power.

And then there's finding a permanent location, making a PCB, and maybe even building an aspirated shelter for it. Also, working on humidity, pressure, rain, anemometer, and I'm sure much more.

Well, the WMR-968 weather station I've been relying on for the last five years or so has seemingly decided that it's reached the end of its useful life. For the two people who have actually told me they watch KMNWOODB1 over the years, just wanted to give you a heads up. Rather than purchasing a replacement weather station, I figured it's time to test my electronics and computer science education and build my own. Should allow for a lot more flexibility (and probably...

I attended my first Skywarn training session a week and a half ago. I'm looking to turn the part-time weather nerdery into a full-time hobby during the summer, considering the hockey season is over for my beloved Wild. Now I have to get my amateur radio license for the unlikely event that I encounter reportable conditions. Any Metro Skywarn/Twin Cities area hams on Wunderground?

So, if you're in the metro area, you probably know by now that it snowed ... a lot. My commute from Woodbury to the East Bank lasted three hours. You'll also notice that the weather station doesn't appear to be sending any wind speed data. Sadly, that part of the anemometer is frozen. I was unable to remedy the situation with a few snowballs. Hopefully it'll unfreeze itself in a few days.

So I'm breaking in the weather blog by announcing that my weather station (KMNWOODB1) is now using the RapidFire mode. It's pretty cool actually, I had made a similar version (which doesn't require Flash) that I hoped to put on my website whenever I got around to it. It is on my psuedo-portal that has Star Tribune headlines and other stuff.Going forward, I'm not sure how much other weather-related stuff I'll have to post here, but if you're really interested in what...
