Stages of Spring
Spring comes in stages. Of course there is always the anticipation stage, where we are making it spring two weeks before the actual date of spring which usually does not really mean spring even still for another couple of weeks. There are the buds on the trees fooling us by looking just like they might open any time now.

Next a few CROCUS peek through

The little greenery all around is the ice plant that will have beautiful neon pinkish reddish purplish color tiny sunburst type flowers and a few early daffodils show up but not in their great splendor until later.

Next come the Bradford Pears,

then the other fruit trees begin to show their blooms. The forsythia and the crabapple bloom and unnoticed except for through our allergies the pine begin to bloom also.

Finally comes the full blast of the daffodils and jonquils

followed by the dogwoods and azaleas

not to mention the weeping cherries

and several other blooming trees about the time the green onions appear followed by the dandelions. We wait for the grass to green up which takes longer than we want. Then the mowing and yard chores begine. Spring is in full swing with anticipation of summer and wonderful vegetables and strawberries and daisies and more. Oh and don't forget the pansies!

Spring also brings T-Ball for my grandson, Easter, Dance Recital for two of my granddaughters, birthday for one granddaughter and so much more.

Thanks, everyone! May slipped in on me! Thanks for the beautiful wishes! I have been busy with the girls' dance recital practices! One more tech rehearsal, this evening and I am responsible for getting them there and through it. I think adding both of them together they are in 14 numbers. Their mother was off yesterday to take care of all of the quick changes yesterday for dress rehearsal. Today, no costumes, so should be easy as they are quite responsible little ones. Please forgive me for not blog hopping to send you May wishes! I have had some luck with photos of birds this week with the swallows and the red-bellied woodpeckers. I take a early morning walk while the girls are working on lessons. Then we play all day until time for dance! What energy they have and imaginations!

Hi Everyone, All is well. Actually kind of a pretty day - know it got up to 77 if not higher with a bit of wind. The skies clouded over and it has started to rain but I think it is to be light stoms and light rains but not certain of course. Weather can change up. The girls are off to Dance Practice and Recital Photos with their mom, this evening. The recital is on Saturday. They looked really pretty as they left all dressed in their costume for the first photo with make-up and hair up in a bun. They were quite excited. Think their dad may have headed over there to take some extra photos. I took them to their practices last week but all the costume changing and hair changing, etc. they neede their mom. I think they each have 6 or 7 changes. So, I am just hanging out at home. Well, I was wrong - Dad must have run to Lowes or somewhere as he is back.

I've been trying to get in to WU but it's been really slow since I got home from work. I was wondering how you were doing - figured it was nerve-wracking for you.

I've got a friend who lives in Hazel Green, Alabama. They had a tornado and there is damage and power outages. I'll hear from her soon enough - apparently there weren't any injuries of any consequences right where she is.

I'm like Bug. I cope pretty well with hurricanes now, but you have so much time with them. Tornadoes are something else. Down here on the Gulf Coast, there are no basements, so we don't have the protection I was accustomed to as a kid. It seems like we always were running to the basement.

I think heavy rain is going to be your big deal - my friend in Keeling says they're forecast to get 4-5". And he was going to get his beans planted tomorrow!

I was wrong was still tornado watch until 9 pm. I was looking at Danville weather by mistake. It is all so comfusing and yes anxious as don't know what moment we will all head to the closet and hoping it does not happen. We had a panic right after dinner but realized it was talking about a different Pocohontas than the one close by.

My goodness, you are getting quite the education in tornado preparedness. Nothing like a scary wake-up call to jar you completely out of your comfort zone. Times like that do serve a good purpose, I think, to remind us of what our priorities truly are -- and that can be quite different from what we think they are when all is usual and normal.

I'm so excited that the sun is finally going to put in a several day appearance where I live. It has been way too wet and gray lately.

Just checking in to see how you're faring. It sounds like things were a bit fraught overnight but much safer than those poor folks in Arkansas.

If I have to have anything, I'd rather have watches than warnings.

Where exactly are you? (If you don't mind me asking.) TN is a large place and I really didn't know where to look on TWC radars last night.

Hang in there. You're really getting a heck of a severe weather initiation. As Sandi said, you're halfway through and, with luck and prayer, you'll come out the other side just fine.

Well, no wonder you freaked! Advanced tornado (or hurricane) prep can be very unnerving to someone who is not used to it. I would hazard a guess that you imagined an imminent hit within minutes.

Be glad that your daughter and SIL have their preparedness down pat. It is better to be over prepared than under prepared. Chances are, nothing will happen.

If you want to know, my hurricane preparedness is to batten down the hatches at the house, throw anything irreplaceable in the truck and haul buggy westward! I am a notorious coward, when it comes to 'canes.

With those, though, you know they're coming and have time to do whatever you plan to do. Tornados? They're like earthquakes for our friends in CA. You just have to be prepared so that, if it happens, you've done everything you can to get ready.

Thanks, and yes, daughter and son-in-law are quite prepared and think that is why I got alarmed as I sensed a more advanced prep than just going to the closet. It was like get your vital needs in a little bag like meds, etc. as did not want me to be without my meds and uncomfortable for a few days without them and if the house was gone. She has never said that on any of my trips here before. That is what really scared me. I got to thinking as all of us do and thinking of my sons abd family that are all elsewhere and needed to let them know I love them....and then the tears. Just have to know that God will take care of me unless it is meant to be. Thanks for coming right over to my blog.

I saw your post at Sandi's. That does appear to be some nasty weather.

Just be alert and keep your eyes and ears on the weather reports.

The biggest thing is: Don't Panic. Just be prepared and know what to do, if need be. You can panic all you like, later.

I know whereof I speak. While we don't get many tornados here in the Lowcountry, we do get hurricanes.

You're at your daughter's, aren't you? Does she have a weather alert radio? If not, I'd suggest that she get one. You, too, for that matter, for home. You can find them easily at places like Target. Walmart, Staples, RadioShack and oodles of places online. I'd recommend RainmanWeather Just tell him Bug sent you! Rainman used to blog here a lot. Pros is his mom. His wife, Aqua, closed her blog here but she still posts at Pros's and at Skye's.

Hi Everyone, I just had to pop on to share our latest adventure with the red-headed woodpecker today. We did not go until after lunch today. The girls had played on the playground forever with many other children. Finally the time came that they yelled, "Granny, let's go feed the ducks." Of course, I was ready. We had barely started feeding when there was the red-headed woodpecker right over head. The really thrilling thing was it swooped right down to get a piece of bread. It was so surprising and so fast that I missed that entirely. He did this several times. Was super amazing.

Hi Skyepony Thanks, There is never a dull moment with the grands. I thought you would enjoy coloring eggs the natural way with the egg coloring recipes. YOur baby ducks are so sweet and such a pretty color. I can just hear them now thinking you are their human mama.

Hi BriarCraft, The park is about 12 miles. We have spent two mornings out there, heading home for lunch. Today we went for the afternoon after lunch and the red-headed woodpeckers did not disappoint us.

Thanks for infor on the black and white duck might be a hydrid. You are right about how Mother Nature can mix her paints with showy results.

Hi DataPilot I had never seen a Red-Headed Woodpecker before either until last year this time also in TN except for wonderful postings here on WU. That is mainly what we see in VA - mainly what you see - different kinds o small woodpeckers, red-bellied woodpeckers and once in a great while the elusive flickers. I was fortunate enough to find the nesting tree of pileated woodpeckers last spring - that was so exciting. Yes, it really thrilling and super please with getthing these photos to share.

I am glad you understand that I have put the blog on cruise control while spending time with my granddaughters. You are right - that they won't be little forever

I've never seen a Red-Header Woodpecker before. We have a number of different kinds of woodpeckers and flickers around here, but nothing that looks like that. I'll bet you were excited when you saw how well your photo turned out.

I'm so glad that you're spending time with your granddaughters. Good for you, for keeping your priorities straight. Your granddaughters won't be little forever.

How close to you is that park you go to in Tennessee to find the woodpeckers? Is it a quick drive or does it fit more in the category of a daytrip?

About that black and white duck, I think it might be a hydrid. A few months ago, I saw an ivory colored mallard and also a big brown duck that was bigger than any duck I have ever seen, but not as big as a goose. Sometimes Mother Nature tries some little experiments.

The excitement of my day - Could not believe my eyes - the second time I ever spotted a red-headed woodpecker and both times in TN. Today saw a pair of them at Pickwick Landing State Park, TN. I am super excited.

Hi DataPilot That carrot cake with cream cheese frosting does sound good.

Yes, I think adults enjoy coloring eggs as much as the kids if not more.

We had fun hunting eggs too, after church. My daughter and I had filled them with half of a Bible verse. So afterwards they had fun matching up the Bible verses. They worked together often having to look it up in the Bible to find the right match.

Your Easter Salad sounds neat!

Hi Sandi Hope you had a Happy Easter!
Your banana bread sounds delicious, especially with the spread of cream cheese!

I had a wonderful Easter with my daughter. We celebrated my 8 year old granddaughter's birthday on Saturday - A Pirate Fairy theme - was quite fun.

Hi YelloworangeRose Thanks for stopping by and leaving Easter greetings. Want to hear all about your quilt. I have one that needs to be finished - all done except for the quilt as you like part.

Hi Skyepony, Thanks for the cute Easter Chicks and Easter Wishes! Hope you had a great Easter. I am betting they might be your ducky chicks - so pretty!

Hi Thoughtsteader Nice Easter thought - Thanks!

Well, Easter is tomorrow but today is a nonstop all day pirate/fairy birthday party for my granddaughter who turns 8 next week. We are having some cinnamon gluten free buns for breakfast. Should be delicious. The girls had gotten fairy wings for me and a fancy necklace and pompoms to wear. They are so funny....they have it planned down to a tee pf each event of the day. The birthday girl and I are waiting upstairs as Mom, Dad, and other granddaughter put the finishing touches on everything. Everyone was rushing and trying to start the party early when their Mom reminded them the party was not to start until 9. She was making the icing for perhaps cupcakes or something. SO, it is Happy Birthday and then Happy Easter! Perhaps I will get some photos to share.

Its been so many years since I've dyed Easter eggs, I'd almost forgotten how much fun it was. Mom would make cups of dye for us kids to use, and then we'd fight over who got which color. Pink and blue were always the favorites; they could be used separately, or mixed to make purple.

And then there was the Easter egg hunt. We'd wake up to in the morning to find candy in our Easter baskets, always hoping that there'd be an extra-high ratio of chocolate to jelly beans. After the initial pig-out session, we'd look for the eggs that the Easter Bunny hid during the night.

Most of us liked hard-boiled eggs, but they couldn't compete with chocolate. So Mom would take all the eggs we'd found and didn't want to eat, and turn them into a colorful potato salad - "Easter Salad". If we weren't careful scooping it out, the colors would mix into an ugly purpleish-brown. Of course, that meant that we'd be extremely uncareful, trying to outdo one another at producing gross-looking (but delicious) salad. I can't think of another dish that's so easy to transform from gorgeous to hideous with a little bit of stirring.

Is WU acting up tonight? I made a comment only for it to disappear grabbed up by the cyber dragon. The way I have to do everything manually to insert a photo is a real pain to lose.

A couple of photos of a strange shaped dogwood tree was what I had shared qnd wished everyone a nice Easter.
