A visit to an Irish Fair

Hummer cam current view -

We have just enough Irish blood flowing through the family to head up to Long Beach, Ca and El Dorado Park for the 'Big Irish Fair and music Festival' Sunday. El Dorado Park covers 800 acres and has 3 fishing lakes and a golf course. In 1984, the Summer Olympics Archery event was held there. The Park acts as a flood relief area for part of east Long Beach sided by the San Gabriel River. The river's headwaters are up in the San Gabriel mountains north and east of LA, flowing south and west draining into the Pacific between Seal Beach (Hi Karen!) and Long Beach.

Many music stages and pretty much non-stop Irish music, traditional to modern. We sat in on The Humble Hooligans and The Golden Boughs

Several stages had Irish Step Dancing competitions and displays. There were influences from Scottish to Welsh. We watched a Bagpipe show which spurred an impromptu street performance of Irish dance.

Of course, a sheepdog exhibit with sheep herding.

Flashbacks to our last vacation :D

Not something you see everyday, the car - not the leprechaun! Ireland is not so much known for its automotive history.. though most people recognize DeLorean. John DeLorean (father of the GTO) founded his self-named company back in 1975 producing his Stainless Steel cars until sidetracked by, shall we say, drug related legal woes. There were a few over 8000 DeLoreans made. This was the first I had seen or heard of the Shamrock - designed and built in Ireland in 1959 - all 8 of them.

A bit more detail can be found here

All in all, a very pleasant outing with family capped with beautiful weather.

I'll leave you with a bit of wisdom from Mr Murphy -

If you think everything seems to be going well,
You obviously don't understand the situation.

If you tinker and improve something for long enough,
Eventually it will break

By making something absolutely clear,
Somebody will be confused

I've just been over to admire and comment on your new Blogspot post -- lots of great photos there.

That cactus blossom by moonlight is an awesome shot. It looks pearlescent.

RE#45: Yes, that's a Rufous. It looks just like the ones here that like to play Top Gun around the feeder. You can see some green on the wing. Looks just like what you can see over at http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Rufous_Humming bird/id. It's the females and immature males that have a greenish back.

Spotted in the backyard today, pretty sure it's a Rufus - no green back evident. But they should be much further north during the middle of summer! There are a large number of Allen's here all of a sudden :D

Sadly my hummers have disappeared .. Not sure the reason (s) .. keeping the feeders filled but haven't seen any in the past 2 weeks ..

we had identified 3 for sure this spring .. and I wouldn't think we would lose all three to something any thoughts on possible reasons ??

Hi BC! It's good luck to see one 'on the wing'! Funny, it took me til the 2nd-3rd read to notice GG drew a 'BuzzerFly' - some people are just clever ;D

Hey Ylee! Just occasional high clouds here - though we did have early morning fog, cal says monsooon is coming back by Thursday, we'll see. Clouds never quite made it over the mountains from the desert last time here.

Hope you had a nice 4th gathering, we saw 3 different fireworks displays from a friends backyard, not so close though ;D

One oriole on the wing at the feeder cam.

You know, I think I saw Yeti with a giant butterfly net running up in the grove!!
That isn't a giant butterfly. It's a BuzzerFly. No! It's Phin!!! Yikes!

The long weekend cometh!!

I have tried to 'ketchup' on friend blogs, now a bit here :D

Hi GG, thanks! Hope you are keeping cool ;)

Hi Pros - cool graphic, Thanks!

Hey, cp! I hear maybe a chance of monsooon this weekend? That would be nice, sounds like mostly over the deserts/mountains - so more for you, less for me - but maybe!!

Hi GG :D The last couple times Phin and I were out on the back patio for lunch, I had Pandora playing some Jazz and was trying to get Phin to 'dance' or head bob - you know, express his inner cockatoo (Hi Syd!). I didn't get anywhere :(

Hi BC! I imagine that I don't work any harder than most, but seems like I may have been complaining more - woops! Mostly, I feel bad about not checking in on people more regularly. This month seems promising :) You know, I think I saw Yeti with a giant butterfly net running up in the grove!!

Phin blends right in here, yoga or not.

I do hope Yeti isn't in the grove, with all those vultures circling overhead, waiting for their next meal.

Yippee! The Irish Orioles are back!!!

Rumor has it you've been working waaayyyy too hard for way too long. I hope work slacks off for you soon -- like yesterday.

Thanks for the cam back. Phin looks like he is enjoying your Irish blog! And Theia has found herself a home. She looks comfortable!

The weather sucks, but what else for the 4th but hot temps.

Running outside to get things done and running back in to cool off.

Hi WW! I guess you have been having fun with hawks, nice AC :) We have red tails and red shoulders here, though they are generally soaring - so not too many photo ops. Unfortunately, also a sharp shinned - and he lands in the backyard (trying to snatch 'my' orioles and hummers), grrr...

Parrot Yoga - (Phin likes the blog color)

And because sofa cushions are just not comfy enough ;-D (I don't know who made that pillow - but it has a screen print of Roman Colosseum but under kitty is the story of why and how St Patrick drove the snakes from Ireland????)

Sliver of a moon setting in the west

Earlier in the day, here's 5 of the 10 turkey vultures circling over the grove

It's been an off week, looks like turning around, Yay!
Hi Ylee! I was hoping that was working for you on the photos I use from photobucket when I don't think WU would take it.
cp, I love those oriole photos! And I knew the soggy oriole in the 'challenged' collage was you ;)
Hi GG, BC! The gang are all doing fine and say Hi, Meow. Unfortunately for them, someone has been majorly distracted with work. Man, I hate when that happens! Thanks for checking in on the Kidz and reminding me about the cam :D

Hi Pros, as BC said - that is the perfect summer quote, and nice photo!

Hey, BC! Chuckle, chuckle :D
See, I knew I would forget to stop by on the 21st for your anni.

Hi WW, summer is here indeed! We can tell here because it is a crispier shade of brown on the hillsides :( Cool photo of the heron - I am sure I saw that pose in the original 'Karate Kid'!

Hi PSP, crusin' the Sound on a boat seems like a pretty nice way to spend the day! Mrs W will be flying in and out of SeaTac once again in a couple weeks - this time her aunt/uncle are celebrating 60th anniversary in Spokane, unfortunately, I can't go.

Hey Ylee - yeah, I tried to change colors in the section a while back - did not figure it out. Hope it settles down at work for you pretty soon!

I was a little MIA over the weekend - entertaining our ex-nextdoor neighbors back from Colorado on their way to Mexico for their 40th. Must be the season :)

We did a quick walk thru Cruzin' Friday night. It was Packards and PierceArrows as main feature.

I didn't realize your background was dark green until I saw the other comments, and checked it out in NUWU, since I usually peruse the other blogs in Classic, for speed purposes. Not to be nitpicky, but the links are a bit hard to read. It's a shame you can't alter the colors in the comments section, as I had a blog concept using a black background! :' )

I'm just now getting over to see your Irish/Scottish display. Always fun for us! I hold a lot of claim to this heritage and always enjoy the festivals. My daughter (yes, the MOCS one) is a bagpiper and so that draws us in too. In Australia I saw a sheepdog demo but also a sheep-shearing demonstration, from start to finish. That was pretty interesting to see. Since none of us are "on the farm" anymore.

Summer is really underway now -whether or not the weather cooperates! But it did this weekend for us. Lovely warm sunshine. We spent much of yesterday boating on a 60' boat (we were invited, thankfully - we are at the mercy of others on this one!) on Puget Sound and it was glorious. Today looks real nice too, but then threats of rain will dim the rest of the week off and on.

Happy First Day of Summer, WTS! Summer is Here! I was excited to see the heron today and am sharing a most unusual heron pose that I observed while on the Riverwalk Trail today.

@Maria photo 075jsummer_zpsdff0f3bd.jpg

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.

Okay, not sure why I think it's more secure to type in someone else's blog that I'm out of town, but just have to say right now I am sitting on the softest bed ever in a nest of pillows drinking great coffee and thinking I never want to leave this room.
The spouse is a huge fan of singer Michelle Channel and found out she was doing a concert in Houston. Usually I stay at budget places but this fancy hotel is right across the street from the venue where parking is questionable. Said Thursday if you can get Fri off I'm willing to boOK a room and drive there.
So here I am in this fancy hotel in a room about the third of the size of my house. I'm pretty sure we could park a Smart car in the shower.
Free drinks at the 2nd floor bar start at 5.
I could get used to this.

Wow this is ... green. :)
You saw sheeps! After shearing when they look all funny, lol
Looks like a great day - the music would be a draw, for sure, even if I'm not Irish. Some Welsh, going back a ways, and Other from England, but no sign of Irish. Green is a favorite color, but, I like orange very much, too. A green shirt with a California Poppy as a boutonniere? Safe enough, here in SP.

Your weather looks fine, if still in the doldrums. That's summer for you ;)

Hi, cp! Yes, green - and I'm not so sure it's in a soothing shade :P
We have heard our next door neighbor playing his bagpipes - didn't make me want to start dance though!

Hi, GG!

GSR GSR!

That could be the name of a cool Irish band :D Both sides of our families are pretty well mixed, though Mrs W has a lot of French Canadian Indian on her mom's side and there is a Polish Princess way back there somewhere, maybe that's where she got her blonde hair ;D

Hey Ylee! Everyone's Irish on March 17th, right? I've been Heinz'd pretty well too. One of these days I may try to recreate the family tree info I lost in a HD crash. I had made it back over 100 years - families were still on the west coast!

Looks like it was worth the trek to LA County. Hope you didn't let the Yeti kiss the Blarney Stone. The music alone would have made it worthwhile for me.

Mr. Murphy? As in the creator of Murphy's Law? Thanks for sharing a bit of his wisdom!

Let me be absolutely clear. Everything is going quite well here. I've just about run out of things to improve, but I'm sure I can find something else to tinker with.
