December Rain???

The last few days we have had some very high winds and this has caused some strange behavior with the WX station. After an unusually windy day, I noticed the I collected 4.8 inches of rain!!!!.
I recently moved the Davis sensor suite (ISS) to a more convenient location because birds were using the rain collection bucket as their personal latrine. The new location was located too close to a mounting structure and the winds actually drafted down the bucket causing the tipping bucket to teeter and record rain when none occurred. I guess I'm going to install a bird deterrent on the rain bucket and return the ISS to the original location. Ideas are welcome. Send me an email if you have any. Thanks

The winds have caused a problem for me too but in a different way. On the 22nd of December it was windy in Tujunga and I picked up .01 of an inch of false rainfall by a vibrating rain collector so the total rain for December is .79 and not .80 making it a dry December. Even though I only picked one hundreth of an inch of bogus rainfall the main wind problem is that even though I have tightened my anemometer and it is supposed to face due north for accurate wind directions mine often seems to shift direction and face another direction other than north with prolonged high winds and that makes the wind direction not accurate. Thank goodness that Davis has a calibration offset for wind direction to take care of this when the anemometer is not facing due north. Two suggestions for scaring away your birds are the use of a fake owl and also tin foil at various locations and they seem to be scared by this. Have a Happy New Year.
