I have often wonder what kind of person opens a private weather station. This is simple or so one would think, everyone does what they do for whatever reason they do things. It can be anything from just for the heck of it to something more clinical that you wish to provide fast and accurate service or better service for your area. It can be done or so i was always told as a kid. If you work for it you can achieve it. Often though we are swept under the rug by big brother. NOAA/NWS/USGS and even state agencies love to make fun of us. They think we are a joke in some locations while in others a god send. Those that would think us a joke should of course remember the following. We often provide better and faster service then they do. Those that love us praise us for that job. I run a PWS in my retirement and frankly i don't know what my local NWS office thinks anymore, I know they dislike spotters very much, even the notion that someone can detect or gather information faster then they can. New station owners need to be reminded of the fact you are not alone in this disagreement. Locally even nationally! PWS owners are providing service to locations not generally covered by traditional govt sources. It leads to hostilities in attitude towards us and breeds a certain resentment so be careful who you deal with at your local offices. Write them, ask them if they take information from the PWS, if they do set it up, if they don't well remember the following you can still send it to them through ham weather using certain software. My local office refused my data for 6 years, so i went thru the ham weather and since they use that data my data was used. I had a number and all they know is that data came from that number. They didn't know who it was. They recently found out it was me though and they didn't like that very much. How they found out didn't make me happy and i will not say that here but sufficient to say they know who i am now. Ticked as they may be they are continuing to pull my data. Persistence pays off. So fear not your data will be used. Please setup your station accurately though ham weather sites thru wdisplay are meticulous about accuracy and if you are inaccurate enough times they toast your data feed and you don't get back on till you fix it. If you going to upload your data to any site really you should make sure your site is accurate, your data as close to perfection as possible. These few steps can get you out there and your data and people will use it. I have had over 12 million hits since 2002 not alot but for a weather site i got more hits then my local NWS office which i still find funny. So they can joke all they like, but they will never keep up! We are the PWS, we are multiplying, we will bring you data from everywhere, we are unstoppable. Get used to it.. Have a great weather day.
