Woodberry Pond Litchfield, Maine (

I took a photo of this camp about a month ago when we had a little snow and the pond was about half froze. Now, no snow and very little ice. It should look more like winter next week at this time.
My friend cc95437 rushed down to my place and practically forced me out of my warmth to venture out into the cold stormy evening. . .am glad she did. hehe
Only the West entrance is open as there is still about 9ft of snow on the ground.

This photo is from a huge tree in Central Park. I think this shows the 3 stages: the red bud, white flower & green leaf.

A Day at Mungo National Park Down Under in OZ :) (
ozcazz)
We are on holidays and we went to Mungo National Park which is World Hertiage listed. The Willandra Lakes World Heritage area, with Mungo National Park at its centre, maintains a continuous record of human occupation stretching back well over 40,000 years. Rain and wind has uncovered ancient fireplaces and hearths, as well as calcified plant matter, artefacts, stone tools and animal bones. At the 33 kilometre long kilometre long crescent of the Walls of China, erosion has sculpted the sand and clay into dramatic formations. This pic was taken at Sunset. Hope you enjoy my journey to Mungo as much as I did :)

From the beginning of creation, I think our maker had a plan... For us to leave these shores and sail beyond the sand, And let the good light guide us to the waves and the wind... To the beaches and a world where we have never been... And we'll climb upon a mountain, y'all we'll let our voices ring, Those who've never tried they'll be the first to sing...

Waves at Rialto Beach (

Another wonderful view from Rialto Beach, Olympic National Park located on the Olympic Peninsula, WA, USA.
It was nearly half an hour until sunrise at this point, but the sky was still beautiful, and was reflected in the waves as they crashed on the rocks below me.
the trees is still God's Country.....
The sky looks old but actually this was taken in the early afternoon. I'd stopped briefly to take a few last photos -- and though still a mile and a half from the Bunny Flat Trailhead -- to say my good byes (in solitude) to the mountain -- when from somewhere far down below -- barely discernable -- came the sound of a train whistle. It was a sound foreign to wilderness -- yet so faint -- so distant -- that somehow it didn't seem to intrude. I stood there listening a long time and something that Joshua Loth Liebman wrote many years ago came to mind: "Some children of the earth are privileged to spend a long and sunlit day in the garden ... For others the day is shorter, cloudier, and dusk descends more quickly as in a winter's tale."
Warmer weather coming this week, but today it's very pretty after yesterday's snowstorm.

I broke in my new MSR Hubba Hubba tent with a trip up into a nearby mountain. I went to bed early and got up around 4am. This picture was taken as I was preparing breakfast at 4:30am with the remnants of the northern lights on the horizon. Unfortunately frost kept developing on the lens during the long exposures, resulting in the strange flare from the fire. Any suggestions on how to keep frost off a lens under these conditions?
Edited 11/5/07. Thanks for all the suggestions. In this case the problem wasn't condensation (kept the camera and lenses outside in a ziplock bag overnight). There were simply frost forming conditions. Thanks to AlteredStars and ICanonit for their recommendation to rubber band handwarms around the lens. That sounds like the answer, I'm looking forward to giving it a try.
An early fall windstorm hit southern Lake Michigan today. Wind gusts as high as 50 mph with more expected tomorrow. Went up to St. Joe Michigan and shot those lighthouses and will try our lighthouse tomorrow if I get the chance. Enjoy the sunset

I got up at dawn, not my default setting, because I knew it would be a beautiful morning on Echo Island. I was right but I didn't expect that when I pulled out of the boat house to catch the reflections and rounded the point to the front of my island that I would find a swan basking in the dawn sunlight. As I moved to get him in the foreground of the dawn, he took flight. I jammed the throttle forward and soon I was chasing him flat out down the lake. It was an adventure getting this picture but it was well worth it. In the chase I got others of shots of the swan that were sharper but this had so many elements I liked that I decided to go with impressionism. It is hard getting a perfectly sharp picture of a bird that is moving at 40 mph when you are also traveling at 40 mph, bouncing on the waves, being wind blown, steering with one hand, adjusting the camera and shooting with the other while using one eye on the water and one in the view finder. All things considered, I'd say, "not bad".

After a long week of storms, large waves and hardly winds, today the waves reached the 7-8 meters of height. On the Lighthouse of Mouro the large waves struck all day. With sun or without him; other times rain or cloudy.I remained 3 or 4 hours carrying out photos. WIND information: www.windguru.com

HISTORY/Caption: The island mouro lighthouse... This Lighthouse entered operation February 15, 1860.Its silhouette recalls to a lighthouse of English rock.Until 1921 they inhabited in it 2 lighthouse keepers that on numerous occasions incommunicado several days by the temporary remained. In 1865 one of the torreros lost the life after to be dragged by one of the strong waves that whip it.In 1920 it withdrew the lamp of a wick, substituting it for a destellador of naked flame with burner, besides a viewpoint of drum. It does some years that the Lighthouse was beheaded by Coasts, passing to the category of beacon. The last incident of certain importance happened in February of 1996 when the system of lighting remained destroyed by a temporary one, remaining dull several days by the impossibility of agreeing to him. The Island of Mouro, declared reserves marine, is a habitual place of I dive. The waves that whip it in days of temporary they are used to surpassing the height of the lighthouse. Their light is situated to 38,7 m. above sea level.

Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) - this stump had at some point in its life been a victim of a fire. Whether set or wild is not known: Fire can cause damage to redwoods, sometimes creating a burnt hollow termed a "goosepen" by early settlers who used to pen chickens, geese and other livestock inside. Redwoods can grow tissue to heal fire scarring, sometimes completely covering the scar. They can also grow a buttress to compensate for a lean.

I knew I needed a DIFFERENT view of Portland Headlight, or you all were going to kill me! So, I was out there, checking on how many of my matted prints had sold at the gift shop today, and of course I brought the camera. . . It was misty and foggy, and I wondered if a photo with the roses in focus, and the lighthouse slightly OUT of focus, might work. I quite like it. . . I'll be interested to see what others think. . .

You can see five distinct waterfalls in this photo at avalanche lake. About 15 miles into glacier national park, there is 2-3 mile hike starting at trail of the cedars. It's actually quite beautiful in and of itself. After tripping over a root, and doing a face plant... I was cursing to myself, that this trek better be worth it. Upon coming on the lake, it absolutely was.
Avalanche lake was glass still, and the waterfalls perfectly visible. Unfortunely, I arrived in the morning and the shape of the mountain surrounding the lake is north facing, and very bowl like. So the lighting on this photo was difficult, as no sunshine really got onto the mountain side.

It is supposed to get pretty cold tonight and for the next few days, possibly down to -45. Not that we can't handle it, but it has been such a mild fall and early winter. It isn't all that unusual to get down to -50 this time of year in Tok Alaska USA, but that doesn't mean we WANT it too... But, if we respect "THE BOSS," (Mother Nature) and prepare just a bit, it's all good.

Hayes on Chichagof Island. The mountains in the foreground would be on Catherine Island and the snow covered peaks behind would be on Baranof Island.
One lone poppy stood opened to greet the sun among a host of daisies. The clouds in the distance take with them the last of the rain for a few days.

This shot was taken about 2 hours ago. The snow is really coming down now. This is the 1st major snow in Rockbridge County, VA. this year. There calling for 5" tonight.
A pleasant surprise on our walk last night - as part of a recent building project near the 101 freeway - wildflowers were planted and this is the first Spring they've blossomed. I recognize the poppy and lupine but I need help on the others varieties.
It rained all Memorial Day weekend. This was my only real keeper for the day today...

In the valley near the water you can see a few of the buildings in Hope. Hope lies on the northern end of Kenai Peninsula, on the south shore of the Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet. The community lies on the 17-mile Hope Highway, northwest of the Seward Highway, near the mouth of Resurrection Creek. Winter temperatures range from 14 to 27; summer temperatures vary from 45 to 65. Average annual precipitation is 20 inches.
Coreopsis, painted daisies, horsemint- so many colors. It's a beautiful sight- lines one whole stretch of the road. There are only a few butterflies now. A beautiful day- blue sky, sunshine, cool breeze, low humidity.

Incredible scenery of northern Utah.
I grew up in this Mountain's shadow but had never ventured up to it. It was in full bloom and glory this day. These images are nice but do not show how magnificent it is in person. I lost count of the different varieties of wild flowers in bloom. This is one of those places you should visit before you die, and at this time of year!

Reflection of Mt. Evans in Summit Lake. The actual summit of Mt. Evans can't quiet be seen in this picture, it is just off to the left of the picture. Unfortunately, no mountain goats this trip. I asked a ranger up there and she said there were some earlier that day but they were gone by the time I got there.
At 6:30 a.m., just as we were preparing to drive to the VA Medical Center, the sky was filled with the most beautiful sunrays I've ever seen in my life. I even took Drzl and went into the woods, and they were in the deepest part of the woods. I wanted to share them with you. I hope you enjoy them. "I believe!"

I was hoping that this trip I would be able to get a clear sky and some sunrise shots... Unfortunately, we had a bunch of thunderstorms go through and cloud up the whole sky. This taken the day before the last day of summer. We got snow on the way home, which was the last day of summer. It's kinda funny, this whole trip was planned so we could be there for the peak of the fall colors, and it wasn't even fall yet! Now it is! HAPPY FALL!!!
This was a dirt road shortcut, but we've yet to figure out what the name means - the blue part anyway.

Very early morning shot of the fog which crept up the driveway and wound its way through the woods. A little eerie, but lovely to see.
So after taking the "Elk and Snow" picture, I called home to let the family know that after I made one more loop of an area, then got a bite to eat I would be heading home. Because of this guy and and a bunch of other elk it was over an hour before I even got to the "a bite to eat" part of heading home.

Halnaker Mill was first mentioned in 1540 as belonging to the manor of “Halfnaked”. It was built for the Duke of Richmond as the feudal mill of the Goodwood Estate. The surviving mill is thought to date from the 1740s and is known to have been standing c.1780. Halnaker Mill was working until struck by lightning in 1905, damaging the sails and windshaft. The derelict mill was restored in 1934 by Neve’s, the Heathfield millwrights as a memorial to the wife of Sir William Bird. Further repair work was done in 1954 by E Hole and Sons, The Burgess Hill millwrights. The mill was again restored in 2004. The mill is owned by West Sussex County Council.

My husband and I got wind of a strong geomagnetic storm and after realizing that there was probably little to no chance of our seeing the resulting auroras in our cloud-covered local area, we drove 100 miles north on the Richardson Highway in hopes of clearer skies. The aurora was so vivid that it showed up clearly before the sky was even fully dark after sunset! What an amazing experience that I can't even put into works. I wish I could have captured more of this. The whole sky was full of color! My first lights with pink and purple too!

Hope you have a great Wednesday.
We live in a valley and sound gets amplified. This morning there is no wind, no dogs barking or birds singing. The only sound is the occasional car on the highway. It is also very foggy. Strange day indeed.

Hey stuck, I live outside of Houston, which region do you live in? We are having our annual festival of the web-worms in the pecan trees. It's terrific. You can just sit beneath the ever decreasing foliage and watch those little buggers eat and poop right on you. And the webs they leave behind are perfect for holiday trick or treating. I think my pecan will be completely covered in webs by the time Halloween rolls around. :)
:) Ah...the joys of fall. I think I'll go have a lie down now. I'm giddy with all the fun.
