PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MELBOURNE FL
1000 AM EDT SAT AUG 02 2014

...JULY 2014 CLIMATE SUMMARY FOR EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA...

MUCH OF EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA HAD A WET JULY. RAINFALL MUCH OF THE
MONTH WAS DOMINATED BY SEA BREEZE BOUNDARY INTERACTIONS. HOWEVER,
EARLY IN THE MONTH TROPICAL STORM ARTHUR LOOMED OFF THE FLORIDA
EAST COAST AND AT THE END OF JULY AN UNUSUAL COOL FRONT REACHED
INTO CENTRAL FLORIDA...NOT PROVIDING COOLING BUT RATHER ACTING AS
AN ADDITIONAL BOUNDARY TO FOCUS SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS. A FEW
AREAS INLAND AND ALONG THE TREASURE COAST SAW BELOW NORMAL
RAINFALL FOR THE MONTH. TEMPERATURES FOR THE MONTH DISPLAYED MORE
OF A RANGE, WITH SOME LOCATIONS ABOVE NORMAL FOR THE MONTH WHILE
OTHER LOCATIONS WERE COOLER THAN AVERAGE.

.TEMPERATURES...
TEMPERATURES IN JULY RANGED FROM ABOVE TO BELOW NORMAL. MELBOURNE
AIRPORT TIED FOR THE 8TH WARMEST JULY ON RECORD, WHILE FARTHER DOWN
THE COAST VERO BEACH AIRPORT TIED AS THE 7TH COOLEST JULY. THIS
CONTRAST WAS THE RESULT OF AN EARLIER SEA BREEZE ONSET SEVERAL DAYS
AT VERO BEACH RESULTING IN LOWER MAXIMUM TEMPERATURES THAN AT
MELBOURNE. THERE WERE ALSO SEVERAL MORNING LOW TEMPERATURES THAT
WERE SLIGHTLY COOLER AT VERO BEACH AIRPORT THAN AT MELBOURNE AIRPORT.

AVERAGE TEMPERATURE VALUES FOR JULY 2014 AT THE FOUR PRIMARY
CLIMATE SITES ACROSS EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA ARE AS FOLLOWS
(RANKINGS PROVIDED IF IN THE TOP 10):

-DAYTONA BEACH HAD AN AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 81.4 DEGREES
FAHRENHEIT, WHICH WAS 0.2 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL.

-ORLANDO HAD AN AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 83.1 DEGREES
FAHRENHEIT, WHICH WAS 0.4 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL.

-MELBOURNE HAD AN AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 82.5 DEGREES
FAHRENHEIT, WHICH WAS 0.8 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS TIES WITH
2011 AS THE 8TH WARMEST JULY ON RECORD.

-VERO BEACH HAD AN AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 80.4 DEGREES
FAHRENHEIT, WHICH WAS 1.3 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL.THIS TIED WITH
1947, 1970 AND 1976 AS THE 7TH COOLEST JULY ON RECORD.

.RAINFALL...
THE FIRST FEW DAYS OF JULY HAD SOME LIGHT TO MODERATE RAINS
ASSOCIATED WITH TROPICAL STORM ARTHUR EAST OF THE FLORIDA
COAST. EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA REMAINED ON THE DRIER WEST SIDE OF
THE SYSTEM, AND NO SIGNIFICANT HEAVY RAINS WERE NOTED.

MUCH OF THE MONTH HAD DAILY SCATTERED AFTERNOON AND EVENING
THUNDERSTORMS ALONG BOUNDARIES GENERATED BY SEA BREEZES, LAKE
BREEZES AND THUNDERSTORM OUTFLOWS. AN UNUSUAL COOL FRONT
SAGGED INTO THE CENTRAL FLORIDA PENINSULA NEAR THE END OF THE
MONTH. THIS BOUNDARY MAINLY ACTED AS AN ADDITIONAL FOCUS FOR
SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS.

MANY LOCATIONS REPORTED ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL IN JULY, WITH THE
MOST NOTABLE TOTAL IN NORTHERN BREVARD COUNTY AT THE TITUSVILLE
COOPERATIVE WEATHER STATION, WHERE 18.18 INCHES WERE RECORDED
FOR THE MONTH. THE HIGH RAIN TOTAL IN TITUSVILLE WAS MORE THAN
2.5 TIMES WHAT IS NORMAL FOR JULY IN THAT AREA. ROUGHLY HALF OF THIS
HEAVY RAINFALL CAME OVER THE LONG WEEKEND FOLLOWING INDEPENDENCE DAY
WHEN A STALLED FRONTAL BOUNDARY LINGERED TO THE NORTH AND DEEP
MOISTURE PERSISTED OVER THE REGION. IN SOUTHERN BREVARD COUNTY,
MELBOURNE AIRPORT RECORDED 11.20 INCHES FOR JULY, WHICH WAS THE 7TH
WETTEST JULY FOR MELBOURNE. OTHER COOPERATIVE OBSERVERS AND RAINFALL
SPOTTERS IN BREVARD COUNTY REPORTED HEAVY RAIN AMOUNTS, WITH 13.53
INCHES IN ROCKLEDGE AND 11.05 INCHES IN SCOTTSMOOR.

A FEW AREAS ALONG THE TREASURE COAST AND INTERIOR LOGGED BELOW
NORMAL TOTALS FOR JULY, MOST NOTABLY IN STUART, WHERE THE 3.45
INCHES FOR JULY WAS JUST ABOVE HALF OF NORMAL RAINFALL.

JULY 2014 RAINFALL TOTALS FOR THE FOUR PRIMARY CLIMATE SITES
ACROSS EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA ARE AS FOLLOWS (RANKINGS PROVIDED IF
IN THE TOP 10):

-DAYTONA BEACH RECEIVED 7.43 INCHES OF RAIN FOR THE MONTH, WHICH
WAS 1.60 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL.

-ORLANDO RECEIVED 8.79 INCHES OF RAIN FOR THE MONTH, WHICH WAS
1.52 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL.
