Garden~

When to plant what & how in Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama.

Ah May... the planting madness is done..sure in FL there is atleast a few things to be planted this month. A good time to assess how much room will be available when the squash, cucs & garlic are gone, to plant some replacements. Southern Peas are black eye, pink eye & cow pea varieties. They fix Nitrogen in the soil, a great summer cover crop that follows heavy feeders like squash wonderfully. They love heat & can dry on the dead bush to be picked after you return from summer vacation. This is true for most the gift/household utility sort of crops like broomcorn & dishrag gourds. Most years if it isn't raining constantly these crops can be left to dry on the plant.

It's a good thing the planting has let up as the spring & summer garden begin to take over. Feeding, watering, staking/caging & harvesting is the main garden chores for the month with most likely a little bit of weeding. Plant these seeds...

North FL Lima beans, eggplant, okra, southern peas, sweet potatoes, Gourds & broomgrass.

Central FL ..Plant~ okra, southern peas, sweet potatoes, Gourds & broomgrass.

South FL sweet potatoes, southern peas, Gourds & Broomgrass.

Aqua~ Great snail pic & what slime!

I had 0.05" this morning. Clouds are sailing by out of the east. Mid to lower level. Great day to cloud watch.

Moon rise was really nice with part of it hidden by a storm way off to the east racing toward. It was huge & bright.

I've enjoyed Scott's blog. Just been too busy to play in it lately.

QueensWreath~ Hope you all catch a break with this front.

Some decent graphics and NICE PEOPLE over in StormTrackerScott's blog, too.
Not that folks here aren't nice, too.

Had a trace of rain. Smelt like ozone as it hit dry grass & sand. This coming rain is needed.

WeatherWise~ From what I've read..& this is happening in Canada too.. Both US & Canada have recently increased our oil gas production for both domestic & export use with fracking, tar sands & such. They increased it before they had a good infrastructure to move it so much of it took to the rails on some cars that were retrofitted, a certain type made for another purpose maybe back in the 1960's. It's becoming clear fast that these cars were not designed to haul this stuff. Another problem maybe & this goes for trying to move tar sands through existing pipelines.. That different grades haul differently & need different containers while the corporations in some of these wrecks/leaks had what they were hauling marked down as not exactly what they were hauling because that really wasn't the right container/type of pipe for it....

Rob
~ Just wait for the VAB tour:)

Already starting to see some showers in South FL this morning. Thursday should be our big front meets wave over FL day.. My yard turtle moved back to his high ground hole yesterday..

Hi Skye, I think I left my comment in your last blog entry by mistake. I was responding to your report on the train derailment in Lynchburg which is about 60 miles from me. I also mentioned how there was another one the same day in Greenville NC and was wondering if perhaps there was some tampering with the tracks going on.

Glad your Mothers Day weekend was good.

Your warm 90s has moved on up to use. I am getting out very early and getting my walks in. Have a great week!

Morning Everyone..

The Atlantic blob looks somewhat anemic this morning. The 00Z GEOS-5 run doesn't spin it up anymore. Not even next week. Still looks like needed rain for FL & some islands coming. Severe weather this week across parts of the US looks probable.

Actually I got to see a few different buildings yesterday.. So I'm starting the picture tour in the SSPF (Space Station Processing Facility) Check back in a few days for a tour of the VAB (Vehicle Assembly Building).

Finn~ Thanks a bunch.

Happy Mother's Day to you too!

I'll be watching that blob:)

bug~ Thanks for helping with the plant id!!!

Got some greens & garden in a stew pot here..yum.

Max~ Thank you:)

I've been looking over things. I'll probably go something low. Plan on getting numbers to you & Taz before the 15th!

Aqua~ Let us know on that plant id..

I'll get some wave graphic up later. I got to go play outside.

Glad you two enjoyed the pics. That's a room you usually can't enter without a white suit. I've seen it from the overlook area a few times but had never been it before. The whole thing is a little longer than the ISS.

I just looked at the form, Bugg.

I gotta send it in. That's just too tempting to pass up. Gonna dig up the poor plant, roots-n-all, stuff it in a gallon ziploc, shove it in a box, and send it off for ID.

Oh, this is funny.

I might just send it in. Now that's funny. Mailing a plant in a box. Wonder if I oughtta include the snails that are crawling on it.

and Bugg- you gonna get some rain from that puffy little ULL that's down there? hmmm maybe, towards the end of this week?

Skye- how long, how much, of a wavemaker will this bring to my coast? It is time for me and Hubby to go EAST and gather the teeth of the ancient dead evil sharkmonsters!

Oh, dear... It seems I missed your birthday, Skye. Happy Belated and Happy Mothers Day.

Great jumping gosh almighty. Lookit them beans! Kentucky Wonders? Or what the old time folks called broad beans?

Ah, a pot of those cooked up, with some cornbread and slices of Vidalia onions on the side and I'd be in heaven.

Have no idea what Aqua's mystery plant is. She could always yank it up and haul it in to her local extension office. Or take pics and email it to them. Try a local garden center; one that has people that know their stuff. What about local Master Gardeners?

So it's Sunday & we now how a wave near PR as anticipated.. I 1/2 expect this to become an invest & possibly a Sub-tropical Depression or storm at some point.

It should begin to affect SFL on Tuesday..

I expect it to remain disorganized, interacting with a trough from the west, while affecting FL bringing a few days of rain.. Still around on Thursday..

After about a week it should move off to the E & NE, this is when it has a better chance to develop some..

I'll try & get a tour of the VAB up later today.. Pics are awesome. I'll have to pick out a few good ones for here.

Cool on the space center visit. Wish it was closer, or we had something like that here. Yes, do bring pics- but post'm in the header so I can see them.

Grew one kale for a co-worker. She will let me know if it gets too bitter; otherwise, I'm curious to see how tall it will grow.

Pear tomatoes coming in; don't know if they're yellow or red.

One Jericho Romaine, going to seed, for seeds.

Tango is incubating her nest of catnip. She just sits on it, so happily, for an hour. No Has Disdain!

Got to see more of the Vehicle Assembly Building today than I'd ever hoped. They are renovating it for Orion & are using some new program that can ingest cad. The video mock up was amazing, down to rusty bolts & birds. It already saved them huge pointing out an engineering error. Actually alot of it was amazing. I'll have to bring pics.

Weather today outside the VAB was upper 80s with light winds. Inside the VAB was 75F with 20-30kt winds blowing near the east bay doors..

Despite me turning down an opportunity to preform flute in Merritt Island & the DragonX launch I had front row seats to being scrubbed it might have been my most science & cultured day ever. Saw some space art & later the big local art for sale at the local college gallery where Concert Album Live preformed Pink Floyd's Wish you were Here Album & some other songs of theirs. Great show. Not as good as when I saw Pink Floyd live but all right for this town..

Ylee~ Saw that. Had a smaller one just miss us the other day. .3LD 6m...You would thought we should have had an adrenalin rush or something..

Thanks for bringing it. Meant to post about Halley's Comet Shower a few days ago.

aqua~ I've been posting them all in the header.. How about that blimp.. That is what Shadow's look of disdain is about.

wab~ Awesome cloud watching here. There has to be some shear up there. Tubes of clouds rolling in front of the 1/2 moon.

Buster Brownpony is broke to cart now. On road, off road, walking, trotting & backing. Had the cart re-welded & such to fit him really nice & come apart in two for easy travel.. Thinking of painting the cart brown & keeping the foot boards black? I've got to sew him a breast collar cover & make matching saddle pad, got a little neon yellow fleece.

You'll hafta post all your pics on your blog header, cause otherwise I can't see your pics- used to be on the r'hand side of the screen- now- gone-gone.

Hi Wab. I've heard other people complain about good and bad years w/tomatoes, too. You just can never tell. The only reasoning, is no rhyme-or-reason. But- you get corn every year. For me, it's so rare.

Sandi- a sweet story for sure. I only picked strawberries once, at a you-pick'm place- but My car smelled like strawberries for almost a YEAR.

Northeast Florida could use some rain again.

Hi Skye,
I love the sound of eating sun warmed strawberries straight form the plant. It must be nearly 50 years since i did that, when as a teenage I went strawberry picking for a local producer during the summer holidays. For the first hour or so, I loved it, warm sun on my back and popping one, or two, into my mouth as well as filling the baskets. But after the first day, I ached everywhere. My legs were sore, my back ached, and I had tummy ache! AND I had to do it for another four weeks!! lol I got used to it after a couple of days, and the money was a great way to swell the university fund!

I love the photo of Shadow sitting in the shadows:)

Skye .. made it up to 93.7 here at my house today .. hot and muggy .. and way too early for temperatures in the 90's .. another year with out a Spring I'm afraid ..

very heavy 5 minute rain tonight .. got caught in a down burst on the way home from a school function .. drove into a wall of water that lasted about 20 seconds .. high winds buffeted my Jeep .. went from 55 down to 25 just due to the fact I had lost any vision ahead of me .. it rained hard enough to have been hurricane amounts .. but only about 20 seconds and drove out of it ..

Kyote even gasped it was so sudden and hard .. water just rolled off the Jeep and a lot of standing water on the road .. you could hear you were going through standing water and felt the jar when I hit it on the pavement .. winds died down within just 30 seconds to a light rain and wind ..

have never done that before !! even in the heavy rains you get in Florida ..

but didn't have a real good year last year ..

Aqua~ Thanks for the garden stroll. So many beans... It seems like one of the best years weather wise for growing them in a decade here.

Onions fared better this year but most mine were medium. A few large. I've grown bigger..

So 90E (or former 90E according to NAVY)..or atleast a bunch of it's moisture is getting drawn across Central America. It's not quite as steep & slow, TX isn't going to get as much as we drooled over the other day, but it's something. Gulf Coast is in for more rain. Shouldn't be another total drowning but some rivers are still high in the area so flooding maybe an issue.

WeatherWise~ It was up to 90º again earlier today. Last week we had upper 90s with high humidity. All the tomatoes I planted last fall, the ones that produced all winter til now died or are dying. I did plant another round during the winter & again this spring so my supply of tomatoes will continue but those that checked out are getting replaced by mostly okra, summer peas & sugar baby watermelon.

Cherries, beans, onions, cabbage, collards, carrots & tomatoes are coming in heavy with an assortment of other things coming up ripe here & there..

Really only spending 1-2hrs a week working in it, raining enough watering hasn't been taking up much time either. It's been well worth it. Oh..the strawberries. Ate a handful this morning, sun warmed right off the plants. Blueberries are so good right now too.

Looking at GEOS-5 I'll start with this shot of TX getting lots of rain Friday night..

The blob or low the various models have been calling for..GEOS-5 is still sticking with blob maybe closes off for a few hours at best. Posted this Sunday afternoon forecast a few times, so I'll start there..less than a week off now.

Note too the low that develops along the gulf coast. I hate to doom NE gulf coast with another drowning. But prepare for more..

This run the Atlantic blob gets absorbed by the Gulf Low but but gets disrupted by yet another large low over the great lakes.
CMC spares Pensacola & the Gulf states but has the severe weather in the mid west & it develops the Atlantic low bringing it to SFL.
