North garden fence was getting old. Buster must have stuck his head through the gate after grass & got caught up in it. He has a small scrape. He needed more reassuring he wasn't in trouble than medical attention.

First! Do I get a cookie?
Question of the day...when to harvest your sweet potatoes?

Guygee wins first!!! & yeah you can have a cookie next time you come get compost to feed your sweet potatoes.. Sweet potatoes you say??? Thanks for answering spathy's question..

Quoting guygee:
Hi Spathy - Skye probably knows much better than I, but I have been growing all kinds of sweet potatoes out on the Space Coast in my yard as ground-cover after I got rid of my grass. Nobody in my house likes to eat them except me so usually only dig up a few for the holidays. There hasn't been a hard freeze here and even light frosts are rare so they just keep growing and spreading, they have been growing for over two years now without dying. The older ones get bigger and really gnarly and and the fibrous parts need trimmed off but otherwise they are fine. I have all kinds, kinds I started from regular and fancy store-bought, ornamentals of all colors...they all make potatoes. They all keep growing and spreading. One red-leaved variety has spread like a weed into my back yard.

So I think the answer to your question depends on where you live. If you get a frost every year best harvest time would be right before the first hard frost...keep a close eye on your forecasts. If you are hungry sooner, a little gentle poking around to check for a couple larger tubers probably won't hurt much...jmho.

P.S. Found a couple good links: 1.Harvesting Sweet Potatoes
2.Harvesting Sweet Potatoes

The only thin I have to add it most varieties take about 90days to make decent tubulars. The tops of the done ones many times will push up out of the soil..good for snacking before your ready to dig it all up. Then I usually wait til around Thanksgiving & try to dig them all between then & Christmas.

Guygee~ Two years no freeze? You may have a potential county fair winner..biggest or oddest living in your yard.

Hey I never thought if that, it would be fun...wish I had a hi-res GPR to find one without having to dig them all out. Still, sometimes they poke out of the ground just like you say and I rebury them, so I will start a watch...when is the next fair?

Hi, ho, Skye! White rabbits to you, this fine September morn.

Love a good sweet tater, hot from the oven with butter and, maybe, a shake of pumpkin pie spice.

Looks like I'm 6th. I did manage to get a first this morning at Shore's. It has been quite a while since I've managed that!

The blue moon was fabulous last night. We were nice and clear, too. As it first rose, it looked really big and was a lovely golden colour.

"The breezes taste
Of apple peel.
The air is full
Of smells to feel-
Ripe fruit, old footballs,
Burning brush,
New books, erasers,
Chalk, and such.
The bee, his hive,
Well-honeyed hum,
And Mother cuts
Chrysanthemums.
Like plates washed clean
With suds, the days
Are polished with
A morning haze. "

Cloudsat caught Leslie yesterday about through the COC. You can really see how the precipitation is limited to the upper levels, tall storm too.

Spathy~ You too!

Guygee~ Fair is March.

Bug~ I found myself out there soaking in some of the blue too.

Rob~Looks like some good crafting & canning too..

Pros~ Love the poem.

Happy September everyone with white rabbits, abound, around & in your town..(X3).

Hello, Skye, thanks for all the info you post. Truly appreciate your input.

This lurker finally joined WU and will still mostly lurk as am newbie on weather descriptions. I have noticed in your postings at JM's blog, that you truly see larger pictures and 'kythe' the systems. I may from time to time ask you to 'splain things.

am lurking from Sarasota btw. blessings and all that!

ULL formed & is diving through the Bahamas. Alot of times I use a ULL to the NW of storms for direction since storms tend to follow, almost too far away but getting closer...interesting.

srqthymesage~ Welcome out of lurkdom! Great to see new members. Feel free to post what ever. Clicking on pics in the entry will usually open that page, animation, etc. There is alot of good folk that can answer questions here.

Sarasota is like my backdoor when it comes to tropical systems & days the wind comes from the west. Always feel free to share your weather spotting here.

{{{FINN}}}~ Sorry for ya'll. Hope he gets well soon. Too much bad lung this year all around.

99L & 99E are new. 99L is tiny & out in the Central Atlantic.

Heard from my Aunt in Tylertown..

We finally got electricity back on today. ...... out since Wednesday noon. Really no reason for the wait except there were other areas they had to work first. Just some kind of problem at the transformer at a neighbors house down the road, something that was fixed in less than 30 minutes. No structural damages or trees down here. about 15 inches of rain. The pond was very low and now it is out in the yard toward the road. It is good to have a full pond again.... hopefully it will last through the winter at this stage. We all are healthy and lived thru it all. Could not believe that it sat there over New Orleans like it did. A lot of water damage in that area and the coast. The Bogue Chitto River is up drastically and has put a lot of camps underwater, in fact it was over the road at Dillons Bridge (the way we go to Bo's steak house in La.)

Heard from Donna & Skip. Slidel was hit hard. They still have their place but have friends that lost about everything.

Leslie is huge, like bigger than Isaac. She's only 1/2 filled in..

Was thinking about that today. Leslie has had a hard time with vertical alignment...can't stand up straight, but has a really big circulation and could end up being a huge storm.

First it might help to agree on some unit of measure.

Square miles? Leslie looks bigger than Texas. The central red dot on the rainbow map is comparable to a medium sized state such as Colorado.

Leslie easily fills a five degree square of latitude and longitude.

Saffir-Simpson Scale? Central pressure? If Leslie is like Isaac, these numbers will provide a poor estimate of the scale and strength of the storm.

Maybe it's time to try something like the Hurricane Severity Index.

It might but wouldn't be as fun.. Just how big. It can be in meme form even (though not required). I wouldn't get anymore mathy than miles across. I'm not being payed to judge this so conversions from hectares to furlongs probability won't happen.. Compared to states & degrees of lat & long are good, better than miles across even..

Aub~ LOL.

Meme form? As in how big a sensation she causes? How big a ‘splash’?

If she stays over water, Leslie probably won't bother most people.

Thanks for that info Skye! It sure will help me with planing my fall garden in Ft Myers. aqua9 got me hooked on growing things last spring, but she lives so far North of me for my fall garden she said I should contact spathy. Both he and you have given me what I need. I'll be planting tomatos, lettuce and peppers. I do these in container's never had much luck with the nematodes. Got a nice crop of Bush Goliath tomatos and green peppers this spring.

Got all the fruits and veggies dry. (why am I doing that) Will likely have to start over when it rains later. Gonna need more towels!

Mowing almost complete.

Looking for something to demolish. Swinging a sledge for a while ought to help with the weight loss. Also good for stress.

rob- the demolishing part is fun! but one month, I spent the entire second week, castrating animals. The neighbors were ok with it, but the animals steer clear of me now. I think that was the same month where I mowed seven times, sold the house, got married, and cut my hair twice.

I much prefer the demolishing.

Funny stuff Aqua!

Yesterday I was attempting to clean my office and get rid of some stuff. Told Angie there was a big trash can in there and to put anything she wanted to get rid of in it. Reflected on that for a moment, turned around and said "Anything except 'My Stuff'"

She laughed. I've learned to be careful how I phrase things around here!

I noticed some talk about sweet potatoes up top. We can't grow them up north; it just doesn't get hot enough. There is a local burger chain that prides itself on offering their take on fresh veggies and fruits -- everything from deep-fried asparagus in the spring to fresh strawberry milkshakes. Currently their big draw is Sweet Potato Fries, cooked just like french fries except with a sprinkling of fresh rosemary instead of salt. Yum! Anybody growing sweets in their yard oughta give that a try. Maybe even GuyGee's family might like 'em that way.

Y'all had fun while I was off today. Had one good rain. I think I'll skip watering today too. Models were more west with the AL blob. The ULL over us needs to move for us to get that rain..

Bogon~ Yeah hoping she will stay out to sea & we can have a little fun with the size.

Rob~ I went with pick apples but substituted passionfruit. Got a gallon or more.

Aqua~ Your fat lady disappeared! She was awesome. I was going to call the size of her left..nevermind.

Oh & I refuse to be responsible to what ever happens to your life for following the moon. You should have learned your lesson that month you mention where you tried to do it all:)

Ah..grand-gourds:)

LowerCal~ NICE!

Brair~ I just happen to be frying up some hashed sweet potato for my chicken egg, home-bread & garden Casserole. I threw some in:)

I'm gonna say 16 5deg lat/long boxes big of clouds...

How big will Leslie get? She is already big, I am wondering how strong for the poor folks in the Canadian Maritimes. New England is going to get some very large waves, and almost surely some coastal flooding at least. The tides in Maine are amazing, I know they are used to that, but high tides with those huge waves are bad news for any new McMansions built too close to shore.

Eyes on post-Leslie to possibly move north to a position between Iceland and Svalbard, pulling more ice out of the Arctic Ocean. This years record-smashing low has been partly caused by "Fram Strait Flushing", and was really accelerated by the "Arcticane" in mid-August that broke the Arctic Ocean freshwater cap. Time of year for surface re-freezing north of 80 degrees but the ice is still disappearing from bottom-melting and the flushing into the Atlantic. How low can it go?

I was staring at the local radar a lot yesterday. There was at least three times that I was thinking Satellite Beach was in for some drenching rains, an inch or more? But all three times the storm lines split just west of Lake Washington or slid off to the south. I had a whopping 0.04 inches of rain in my gauge this morning from all day yesterday. Disappointing and not nearly enough.

I keep wishing for rain on the main, and people get really annoyed and make side-swiping comments, feeling their own obvious superiority. One kind soul was nice enough to wumail me to suggest I take a ride down I-95 and look at all the water, as if he was whispering in my ear that I had a rip in my pants and I should cover up. They do not understand how different this rainy season has been in the local area of south-central Brevard compared to the flooding in many other areas of the peninsula. Our rain had come in short heavy bursts, but interspersed with long dry spells, leaving the soil too dry and the vegetation suffering.

Looking forward to next week's cool front! Cheers!

P.S. At least I got four hundredths yesterday, I see KCOF got zero, their eighth straight day without any rain.

Hiyalls :)
We've had severe thunderstorm warnings two nights in a row. PB Gardens, Wellington and Acreage can't take any more rain...
Ants running crazy again and smells like TS here. Can we possibly get a named blob? NHC giving 40% chance and gfs pointing at FL.
Lake Okeechobee must be already ok with water levels but I haven't checked. If more rain is on the way, will they manually lower the water levels? If they do, will the extra water run towards inland PB County?
