Garden~

When to plant what & how in Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama.

August gardeners in Florida are busy readying beds, gathering seeds & planting. Harvest from late spring & early summer's garden continues. Don't forget to rotate your crops, for example..legumes (beans/peas), followed by heavy eaters like corn/tomatoes, then root crops & leafy greens. Surround with herbs & flowers when possible. Below is what each part of Florida should plant from seed this month.

North FL any beans, Broccoli, cauliflower, collards, corn cucumbers, onions, southern peas (cow, black eyed), peppers any squash, Tomato, turnips & watermelon.

Central FL pole beans, broccoli, celery, collards, corn, eggplant, okra, onions, peppers, pumpkins, any squash, watermelon.

South FL Pole & Lima beans, cantaloupes, collards, corn, eggplant, okra, southern peas, peppers, pumpkins, tomatoes & watermelon.

Patti~ Hope you fair well!!!

Wab~ None of them living down in NOLA trust the levees, about all of them fled. I think the Dr has to stay. He had a nightmare in Katrina. They always fair well at the chicken farm in Tylertown. Once in a while a chicken house has been hit by a tornado or something, house has always held. Saw the old homestead house at the tree farm back in May. Katrina & time showed hard. I should post pics of it someday. My family tree farm maybe in the fray here. Trees are 5 years old. Katrina wiped it. It's hell growing trees in Southern MS but the govt relief damage checks from the storms killing them pay well enough to try:)

Guy~ I've been trying to explain that to the MLB NWS. They tag a dangerous storm, it comes here & dries up on impact, then they call to verify & all I got was I watched another one evaporate..

It's still about 10mph, high was 23mph. Rain ended. Only got ~2 inches for the whole event. Been slighted all summer. [..]
I did only a little better, had a total of 1.64" since 7 AM yesterday. Feel the same way as you about our rainy season, too many times the storms were lined up then miraculously parted, as if a Moses mini-me was on my roof parting the radar's Red Sea.

Doctor told me yesterday the knee is gone, needs a new one. blah. I guess I will be waiting until there is a big sale at Wal-Mart. Time to slap myself and buck-up, boy.

Thanks Hades~ I put ILEANA up. Almost surprised to be ahead of the EPAC this year in the Atlantic.

ISAAC has strengthened some. AF309 has caught it going near due west the last 3 fixes but it has been wobbling hard north, than west. They are on the way in on another fix.

Hi Skye!

Is there such a thing as a twin tropical system? There really does seem to be a second blob that's spun off more or less in the direction first predicted by most of the models. If it can just clear FL, it could bring a lot of much needed rain to middle GA. Hoping for steady, soaking rain - not the flooding kind!

Hey Skye,

Came by to see how you are doing! What a way to end a vacation... by the time this is over you are going to need another one! : )
Stay safe!

Guy~ Hope that knee gets better quick. Know how you people over there hate coming to the mainland:)

Rob~ It's good to be back. I'm glad I spent the last few days before I left preparing for a tropical Storm. It is so big.

FL has seemed to have finally severed that extra something that Isaac pulled into itself back in the Central Atlantic, that had it looking like two entities that couldn't quite come together into one at times... Between that hindrance being removed & the loop eddy he's over some intensifying could be next up..

Cat thought she wanted to go out and play. Made it about 30 ft and decided it was a little soggy for her taste.

I think everyone in FL probably agrees that Isaac has overstayed his welcome.

Glad to have you back and posting this info for us.
Glad that buster is doing better!

A lot of instability. Tornado warnings popping up on the west coast now.

Hey Skye - I was posting on the main blog the same time as you and my computer blue-screened. Borrowing my son's for a few minutes, the situation has sure made a turn to the strange. It is pouring down here as I imagine it is over you, almost like two storms now.
Headed off to the doctors today...torn ACL in my knee. Going to leave early for the drive onto the mainland, lol. ........bringing up my old linux box when I get back.

Hey Rob & Guy~ I see I've got a tornado watch. Squally night. I've got .41" since lastnight, 0.64" in the last 24 hrs. Cat is ready to go play in it.

Member Since: August 10, 2005 Posts: 222 Comments: 39353
I checked my rain gauge this morning around 7 AM, was a little surprised to find only 0.81 inches collected in the last 24 hours. I thought it might be more, but that amount correlates pretty well with my rain collection "array" that has not been quite refilled yet. Some more to come today, and definitely more wind whistling through the wires this morning.

Thanks everyone for conditions, updates & great graphics! We saw the first outer bands around JAX, drove through some more with heavier rain the close to home we got.

Power & such are staging. They seemed to be converging maybe just north of Jax.

Found the kids at a hurricane party so we stayed there for a while.

Highest wind so far here is 21mph, 0.22" so far.

Buster is a wreck.
