When to plant what & how in Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama.

In November the planting frenzy continues for all the state of Florida, heaviest for South FL planting some summer & most winter varieties still. Harvest should be picking up too with a mix of some early winter & late summer. The hot fall has found favor with some late okra & looks to be a great season for tomatoes, cauliflower & broccoli with Brussels sprouts not liking it so much. It's a good month for local diverse veggie eating. It's time to turn compost into your garden, improve soil & throw seed to the ground. Don't forget to rotate your crops, for example..legumes (beans/peas), followed by heavy eaters like corn/tomatoes, then root crops & leafy greens. Surround with herbs & flowers when possible. Below is what each part of Florida should plant from seed this month.

North FL beets, Broccoli, cabbage, Carrots, kale, Kohlrabi, Mustard, onions, radish. Last month to plant~ spinach, strawberry & collards.

Central FL beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, collards, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, mustard, onions, english peas, radish. Last month to plant spinach, strawberry & turnips.

South FL all beans, beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, collards, corn, cucumber, Kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, mustard, onions, all peas, potatoes, radish, spinach, tomato, turnips. Last month to plant strawberry.

November 2011
20th-22nd Favorable Days For Planting Root Crops. Fine For Sowing Grains, Hay, And Forage Crops. Plant Flowers.
23rd-24th Plant Carrots, Beets, Onions, Turnips, Irish Potatoes And Other Root Crops, In The South. Lettuce, Cabbage, Collards, And Other Leafy Vegetables Will Do Well. Start Seedbeds. Good Days For Transplanting.
25th-27th Poor Planting Days.
28th-29th Good Days For Planting Peas, Squash, Corn, Tomatoes And Other Aboveground Crops, In Southern Florida, Texas, And California.
30th Kill Plant Pests On This Barren Day.

g'morning ya'll

Finn= ohhh...I forgot to tell you about your avocado. Showed the pic to Rainman, Dau, CoWorkers...they were all dumbstruck.

See, I remember the football-sized ones we had here in Fla, before Andrew. They are just now (20 years later) starting to show up again, at farmer's market's and the like. Used to buy them from roadstands in Hialeah, for a dollar each, or less.

The taste and texture is so different than the ones shipped in from 3000 miles away.

Finn- your last paragraph put me there, too.

Skye- so happy for the BlueAngel eggs- are they still a little blue?

love to all

Hades called it:).. There's 98S..

05A weakened a bit & looks like it should eventually turn toward the south.

Finn~ Best of luck on your window decorating. Looks like your in for a great holiday..

I should get decorating underway this week.

Angel's egg celebration kinda carried into today. Everyone still joyed by it. Sometimes they won't lay again after something like that & she still is sore..

Jus~ Thanks!

Wooohoo, long live Angel! :D Great news {{{Skye}}}

I loved the Shatner video too, so funny, yet vital knowledge. Our neighbor's house had a fire today, our quiet street was filled with fire-trucks, ambulances and police. No injuries, that was great. Compressor in their garage started the fire, but it was contained by the brave firemen and women, my hat off to them, always.

I stayed faaaaaaar away from the Black Friday sales, drove across the FL peninsula from in-laws house trying to digest a poor bird... Glad Buster got new gear and you got to ride away in the sunset with your hair and dress floating in the wind. I'm going to call you "Rides With Wind" from now on... have a clear picture of you in my mind... :)

Yes, do get an avocado tree! Mine gives absolutely delicious fruit, I think I bought it at Walmart or Kmart. It's the big Florida kind, but I didn't know what it was till I saw the huge fruit. Very different from the heavy and pasty Hass avocados, which are good too, but these are refined, light and juicy. Yum!

Our store is preparing to enter the Lake Worth Xmas Window-competition, busy days making the windows look good and enjoying the team effort. I'll take pics (took a few shots of our lit garden reindeer and the doggies, just posted them in my blog pics).

This Xmas feels so special with my daughter Leena here, Jamie's kids are coming from CA and even my best pal is arriving across the pond for the the Finnish pork roast, which cooks slowly all night in the oven and is lavishly decorated before dinner. Tiger shrimp and salmon roe with sour cream, chopped dill and onions is on the menu too - and the last of our 4 avocados :) And kids want Paella and Gazpacho too... very international. How wonderful to be a busy mom, I love this time of year, and having kids around just makes Xmas what it is, no matter what age the "kids" are :) And I feel my mom, step mom and dad here too, roaming around and smiling. I don't think I have enjoyed Xmas preparations this much for years!

Tropical Cyclone Outlook
15:00 PM RET November 28 2011
=================================

During the last 24 hours, thunderstorm activity has strengthened within the oriental part of the ITCZ
between equator to 10S and 70E to 85E. At this time, it remains fluctuating and without any organization. Surface obs (buoys 23010 and 23692) along with ASCAT data of yesterday evening (1630Z) and this morning (0332Z) suggest that a weak low has formed in this area (position based on ascat data: 4.8S 80.0E). Estimated MSLP is 1006 hPa and winds are in the 5-15 kts range reaching locally 20 kt in the southern semi-circle. Initial motion seems to be rather fast at 10-15 kt towards the Southwest.

At present time, environmental conditions appear marginal with rather strong shear and poor
monsoon inflow. SST are in the 29°C range. Within the next few days, if the current
southwestwards fast moving motion continues, shear should gradually decrease (mainly south of
10S). Low level inflow should stay marginal Tuesday and part of Wednesday (weaker subtropical
ridge due to a transient mid-lat trough), but should improve significantly after that as the ridge
rebuits from the southwest associated to a forecast rather strong monsoon flow between 60E and
80E.

Development of a tropical depression is not expected Tuesday. It becomes poor to fair Wednesday
and Thursday.

There is that blob pulling together off the Leeward Islands. I expect it to get more interesting. It may have frontal issues to deal with once it gets going better.

The front is coming thru Fl today..It's a digging deep. Should bring some rain.

Coop News~ Yesterday, Angel..the one that was hurt so bad, layed her first egg since she was attacked by the foxes, near a month ago.

At 12:00 PM UTC, Depression ARB04-2011 over Lakshadweep area continued to move northwestwards and lays centered over southeast and adjoining east central Arabian sea near 12.0N 71.5E, 150 Km northwest of Amini Divi (Lakshadweep Island) and 350 km north-northwest of Manglore(Karnataka).

The system is likely to intensify slowly into a deep depression and subsequently into a cyclonic storm and move northwestwards during next 72 hrs.

Damage expected over Lakshadweep Islands: Minor damage to loose and unsecured structures.

According to satellite imagery, the Dvorak intensity of the system is T1.5. The convection shows no significant change during past 12 hours. The lowest cloud top temperature is about -89C. Associated broken intense to very intense convection is seen over area between 11.0N to 16.5N and 66.0E to 72.5E.

3 minute sustained winds near the center is 25 knots with gusts of 35 knots. The central pressure of the system is 1000 hPa. The state of the sea is rough to very rough around the center.

The Madden-Julian Oscillation index lies in phase 3 with amplitude of more than 1. As per the dynamical it would lie over the same phase 3 during the next 3-4 days. Phase 3 is favorable for intensification of the system over the Arabian Sea. Sea surface temperature is 29C around the system and gradually decreasing to the north and west. The ocean heat content is less (80-90 kj/cm2) over southeast and east central Arabian Sea and less than 40 kj/cm2 over west central and northern Arabian Sea. The relative vorticity and low level convergence at 850 hpa level and upper level divergence show no change during past 12 hours. The vertical win shear of horizontal wind over the region continues to be high. There is no significant change in 24 hour tendency of vertical wind shear around the system. The system lies to the south of upper tropospheric ridge, which roughly runs along 16.0N in association with an anticyclonic circulation over west central Bay of Bengal and adjoining Andhra Pradesh as a result the system lies in the southwestern periphery of this anticyclonic circulation in middle and upper troposphere. The high vertical wind shear will continue to inhibit the intensification of the system. As the system will move further north and lie closer to the ridge, the vertical wind shear will decrease, leading to intensification.

Quoting HadesGodWyvern:

official 01R in the making this week?

That starts really close to the equator.. though maybe more likely with the change in tropical season going to the SHem. Certainly has the SST.

NOAA has a different name for 05A.. IO052011 - Tropical Cyclone (<64 kt) FIVE.

Sorry ya'll, I dorked that launch.. Slept through it. One kid remembered ~15mins too late.

=================================

At 3:00 AM UTC, Latest satellite imagery indicates that a depression has formed over Comorin area and neighborhood. Depression ARB04-2011 is located at 7.5N 76.5E, or about 120 km south-southwest of Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), 400 km east-southeast of Minicoy (Lakshadeep Island), 400 km west-northwest of Colombo (Sri Lanka) and 500 km north-northeast of Male (Maldives).

The system is likely to move west-northwestwards across Lakshadweep area and intensify into a deep depression during next 48 hrs.

3 minute sustained winds near the center is 25 knots with a central pressure of 1002 hPa. The state of the sea is rough to very rough around the system center. The ship near 7.5N 75.5E reported surface low pressure of 1002.8 hPa with winds of 23 knots. The 24 hours pressure tendency is about 3 hPa over Kerala and Lakshadweep area.

According to satellite imageries, the Dvorak intensity of the system is T1.5. The convection clusters have merged into each other and has organized and deepened during past 24 hours. The lowest cloud top temperature is about -85C. Associated broken intense to very intense convection is seen over area between 6.5N to 10.0N and 71.0E to 76.0E and moderate to intense convection over extreme south Tamil Nadu, south Kerala, and rest southeast Arabian Sea, Maldives, and Lakshadweep area.

The Madden-Julian Oscillation index currently lies over phase 2 with amplitude more than 1. As per the dynamical and statistical models, it would lie over the same phase or phase 3 during next 3-4 days. Phase 2 and 3 are favorable for genesis and intensification of the system over the Arabian Sea. Sea surface temperature is 28-29C. The ocean heat content is less (70-80 kj/cm2) over southeast and east central Arabian Sea and less than 40 kj/cm2 over west central and north Arabian Sea. The relative vorticity at 850 hPa level and upper level divergence are favorable for intensification. The vertical win shear of horizontal wind over the region is favorable as it is low to moderate (10-20 kts). There is negative (5-10 kts) 24 hours tendency of vertical wind shear around the system. The system lies to the south of upper tropospheric ridge, which roughly runs along 14.0N in association with an anticyclonic circulation over southeast peninsular India and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal.

Hades~ Thanks for bringing all that. I see NAVY has both 05A & 05B for the storm off India. Are they in the middle of fixing a wrong? Either way that storm off India is so big. Amazing how it's reaching across the equator & messing with 96S.

Hey everyone~ I've been on a Black Friday shopping spree. Just finished at horseloverz.com. I can't believe I didn't buy a saddle (except I don't need any more)..the thousands of equine deals there were wow. Skye is getting a new turnout sheet & a file. Buster is getting a halter (the foal halter he wore when I got him as a bag of bones it tight now), hand clippers the kids can use & a bit. His training has progressed past the o-ring snaffle.

Thanks a bunch for the launch reminders.. Big AtlasV to Mars.. can't dork this one. I should be able to get pics if the clouds cooperate. More sprinkles blowing in from the Atlantic is expected tomorrow. Had a Trace several times today.

Cal~ Awesome lunar animation.

Jus~ That is a tragic T-day disaster. Got to wonder how many Shatner has saved from a fryer fire..

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I even pulled off a quick ride as the sun was setting. I had no time to change, went barefoot in a dress. A good flowing riding dress if there is such a thing.. It was like I was 13 & run off after church or something.

I'll get the main entry updated some time tomorrow. May see an invest in SW Caribbean. Even more interesting is Leeward Islands, PR (probably just N of there & Hispaniola) over the next 5 days or so.

Published : Friday, 25 Nov 2011, 9:58 AM CST

Sun-Times Media Wire

Chicago - Twenty people were sickened after someone began using a grill inside a North Side home on Thanksgiving night, sending seven people to area hospitals after suffering carbon monoxide poisoning.

An EMS Plan 1, which sends five ambulances to the scene, was called about 10:35 p.m. for high carbon monoxide levels in the 4300 block of West Roscoe Street, according to Fire Media Affairs.

Twenty people were inside the home during a Thanksgiving celebration when someone used a grill inside the home, Fire Media Affairs Dir. Larry Langford said.

Thirteen people were treated for high carbon monoxide levels, Fire Media Affairs said. Seven were transported to Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center and West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park with minor injuries.

The carbon monoxide levels were normalized and the EMS Plan 1 was secured about 11 p.m.

Tropical Cyclone Outlook
15:00 PM RET November 25 2011
================================

Available surface obs show that a broad and elongated clockwise circulation exists over the area axed along 7S to 8S and between 55Eto 60E. 0439Z SSMIS microwave data and latest satellite imagery suggest that the current center may be located close to the east of Coëtivy (Seychelles archipelago) near 7.5S 57.5E and an estimated MSLP at 1005 hPa.

Associated winds are in the 10-20 kts range reaching locally 25 kta in the northwestern quadrant.

Environmental conditions appear marginally favorable for significant development within the next few days: Monsoon low level inflow should gradually become less and less efficient tomorrow (due to a potential cyclogenesis in the northern hemisphere near the southwestern coast of India between 70E to 80E). Trade winds inflow should lessen somewhat Sunday with a weaker subtropical ridge.

Easterly shear is currently moderate to strong (15-20 kts according to CIMSS analysis) and should
strengthen Sunday.

Development of a tropical depression is not expected for the next 72 hours.

Fresh Oceansat of 99L.. Somewhat elongated surface low, but I wouldn't say frontal in nature at this time.

Hey everyone. 97S is gone & Kenneth got named. He's got a nice eye at the moment & isn't expected to bother land.

Hope a safe night & tomorrow for those in the path of the severe weather.

Thanks a bunch everyone for signing the Brevard County petition to allow us to live more sustainably on properties. Chickens, rabbits & such are allowed in major cities like Atlanta, & NYC..why they aren't allowed in rural Brevard County where one is allowed four horses an acre makes no sense.

Pottery~ I let them know about you problem. There was a short glitch when they were fixing something..you may have caught that.

RTLSNK~ Little kids just know when:)

Now I'm gonna have to put Apple fritters on my cooking bucket list.

Ogal~ Have a great Thanksgiving. So glad your son gets to be there too. We've got a wonderfully huge family dinner planned. It's wunderful to have so much to be thankful for, including wunderfriends:)

Finn~ That is beautiful!!!!

Spathy~ Thanks so much:))

Pros~ I hope you a Bountiful Thanksgiving, may your glass be filled..

Aqua~ Thanks so much. It's a shame how those not AU is allowed anything you would spend money on..Horses, Dogs, cats & pets but not any pets that give food.. rabbits, chickens, mini goats & pigs are all outlawed. You can't sell extras out of your kitchen garden either..

Anyway, good luck, and keep-up the Good Fight.

Good Morning Everyone!

Todays story concerns four odd things that I have discovered that happen in a home that no one ever talks about. Since I have been home for six weeks with this knee in various stages of disability, I have tried to help SugarBear as best I can with the various household duties that I can do without hurting the knee.

1. Did you ever notice when you put clean sheets on your bed that the bottom sheet, you know, the one with the rubber bands on all four corners, goes on the bed bright side up. But the top sheet has to go on the bed dull side up so that when you fold the top over the bright side hem will show. Of course it shows over the dull side unless you put a blanket on it so no one sees the dull side. That is odd don't you think?

Who came up with this silly idea. Did the first seamstress not know that you had to fold the top sheet over? Did the first bed maker simply decide to fold the top sheet over one day only to discover that it made the dull side of the hem show and therefore it had to be put on upside down? Logical minds want to know.

2. Did you ever notice that when you are cooking tomato sauce and you've covered the pot to let it simmer for awhile, and you go back to stir the sauce, that when you lift the lid you discover much too late that the sauce has formed these volcano looking mounds rising up from the surface that pick that instant to explode like popcorn throwing boiling hot oily red dots all over the kitchen all over the stove and all over your brand new shirt?

Why aren't there warning labels on cans of tomato sauce? Why does it explode like popcorn? Other sauces don't do that, oh they may bubble and boil over the top of the pan if the heat is up too high or you wander off for a few too many minutes, but they don't explode. Is it possible that the first farmer planted his tomato plants too close to his corn plants and due to the close proximity that some sort of cross pollination or genetic DNA mixing occurred? Do you think we could replace gasoline with exploding tomato sauce? Logical minds want to know.

3. Did you ever notice that just at the moment you're watching something in the oven that requires precise timing like those wonderful garlic cheese biscuits that are baked at 450 degrees for exactly 9 minutes and 3 seconds and if you don't remove them at that precise moment it can be the difference between something that melts in your mouth or something that looks like a burned hockey puck, that ten seconds before the timer goes off the door bell will ring and you will be the only one home at the time and the dog will begin snarling and barking like there's a squad of aliens at the front door.

Normally the dog is a wimp and you didn't even know she knew how to snarl so you have to check it out only to discover that its some cute little 7 year old girl selling girl scout cookies so you can't yell at her because her Mom is standing on the sidewalk watching you like a hawk so by the time you tell the little girl no thank you and get back to the oven, forget it, hockey puck city.

How do they do that? Is it ESP? Is it Radar? Do they have noses like bloodhounds? Is there an invisible sign on your front door only visible to people that go door to door? Logical minds want to know.

4. Did you ever notice that the one place in your home that you would think would always be clean, the shower stall, is always grungy after a week? You would expect the toilets to need cleaning after a week considering the traffic they have to deal with.(You didn't think that I could say that politely did you?)

How is it possible that the shower stall gets all that stuff on it? Even when I get dirty outside in the yard I hose myself off before I come back into the house to take a shower. I wonder if it has something to do with makeup? I don't use makeup, but I know someone that does, SugarBear. Logical minds want to know.

chuckle, chortle, snort

Skye,

Up very early. Things I needed to get done before my son's arrival. He was visiting friends in Gainesville last night. The night prior to that he stopped in Atlanta to see friends there. With his flying schedule he has not been able to do this so inbetween jobs he is taking the opportunity.

We have nothing specail planned for Thanksgiving other than the complete meal with all the football games etc. Just the three of us. I hope for each of you your Thanksgiving is the best ever. Don't forget to give thanks for the many wonderful things we each have. Life has been good to us even with all the bumps. Love each one of you and thank you for being my friends for another year.

"RTLSNK ~ I may end up making cinnamon rolls by the end of the day.."

Yeah, I know, as soon as someone mentions cinnamon rolls everyone goes oh would that be good or what? :)

For me its a toss up between those and Apple Fritters. My Father was a Baker and he used to make a killer icing for rolls. Mix powdered sugar with half and half and a teaspoon of real vanilla extract. Take half of a cup of half and half, add powdered sugar until it becomes thick but spreadable, then add the vanilla and mix well. Enjoy. :)

I'm proud to say I signed! thank you for telling us
that ANYONE can sign it. I hope it is the first step for us to take back the earth, and some semblance of control of our foods.

Hey everyone~ 99L is up..

Turns out anyone in the world can sign this easy quick online petition for Brevard county residence with less than 2.5 acres to have a few farm animals for food & property maintenance. Many 1 acre plots around here are allowed 4 horses per acre but only 1 hen per residence & no rabbits or small ruminants. Less than 1 acre can have no hens. Our county long ago took our right to live sustainably, we are trying to get that back. Thank you everyone that takes a moment to sign. It's fast & private ..Please Sign Here Now..
