Garden~

When to plant what & how in Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama.

In October the planting frenzy continues for all of the state of Florida, while we harvest the last tastes of summer. It's time to turn compost into your garden, improve soil & throw seed to the ground. Don't forget to rotate your crops, for example..legumes (beans/peas), followed by heavy eaters like corn/tomatoes, then root crops & leafy greens. Surround with herbs & flowers when possible. Below is what each part of Florida should plant from seed this month.

North FL beets, Broccoli, cabbage, Carrots, cauliflower, collards, kale, Kohlrabi, Lettuce, Mustard, onions, radish, spinach, strawberry, turnips.

Central FL beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, collards, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, mustard, onions, english peas, radish, spinach, strawberry, turnips.

South FL all beans, beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, califlower, celery, collards, corn, cucumber, eggplant, Kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, mustard, onions, all peas, peppers, potatoes, radish, spinach, summer squash, strawberry, tomato, turnips.

October 2011

The Cape Verdi low has surprised me it came off just a whiff of clouds and suddenly now has some spin this afternoon...

see the Keys getting rain ... is it going to head up your way or just of shore???

the blob in the Western Caribbean is going to meander a few days I think ... then the trof should take it north ... over northern Florida and the the eastern seaboard states ...

least thats my call until I change it ...

Hi, Skye! I'm at a different workstation at work. For some reason, my regular work computer won't load your blog.

Anyway, I wanted to let you know how much I liked the webcam vid you posted on Bogon's blog. It was really neat!

Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!

12E/95L wrecking havoc. Killed atleast 45 so far, way more than 4 Jova claimed. Guatemala worst hit. People are on their roofs in Honduras. Many villages are flooded & inaccessible. Best of luck to anyone in it.

wabit~ Yeah I'm stepping outside of the NWS a little for today, sorry the whole thing was so vague too, it was late..

Today I don't expect much rain in Central FL, some clouds though. Indian River & Martian County may get a sprinkle. I 1/2 expected some rain for far south FL today with farthest South best chance. It's already started in the keys. We should start getting more wind witht pressure gradient setting up.

Rain chances may increase a little over the next few days, chances spreading north slowly. SFL higher chance of rain.

Tues-thurs~ comes the real chance of rain & maybe storm for some areas of FL.

Friday clearing & cooler.

Bogon~ does look like it is kicking in. Navy cleared out a few storms lastnight. Kinda waiting on them to add these two. NOAA is already on that invest In the E Atl.

The Caribbean blob southeast of Cuba is starting to come together. There is strong spin coming off the knee where Guatemala meets Nicaragua.

There is also some lazy wobbly spin associated with a blob at 35°W. Looks like the MJO is working.

JOVA, 12E, 90W & 97B are gone. 93W is new. And NOAA has declared an invest in the eastern Atlantic.

Severe ground clutter storm tonight. Many high cirrus. Very bright circle around the near full moon.

Wab~ That's cold & windy.

90º here. The Young cabbage looks like it is in pain..

Caribbean definitely is a wait & see. I'm just not totally buying the models. With the land mass there as small shift could put it in a different basin. Time of year too, the way the fronts are coming. It's a hard call.

That trough over Haiti look intriguing too. If Ex-12E backs up, stays on land or ends in the EPAC again. That trough could get pulled up & enhanced by the next front, bring FL a chance at a good rain.

Splash~ Enjoy & safe travels. I think I'll live vicariously with a cup of good coffee.

Spathy~ I've seen where monks that are vegetarians with no supplements get by with the insects that sneak in. We also eat alot of dirt a year.

Chemicals make growing food cheaper. Chemical companies push their products. Them & food companies also go out of their way to gain your trust. You definately right comsumers need to look what is in their food...legistation needs to allow us to do that. Food companies aren't required to tell us what is even Genetically modified.

Afternoon Skye ... Is cool up here today 59º with winds up to 30 mph making it feel even cooler ... last weeks Indian Summer was very enjoyable with temps in the lower 80's but it brings the reality of winter not far off ...

A egg a day is pretty good this early in their laying you will soon be getting more then enough for a family of 4 ... and the eggs will be getting bigger too ...

The blob in the Caribbean is a wait see to me but with the MJO moving over anything can happen down there in the next 2 weeks or so ...

Hope your enjoying your pleasant 82º weather ...

Spathy - I give the article mixed reviews or at least my stomach did!

Morning all - chilly day here in Strasbourg, FR. This is my last free morning :(. Meetings start at two today and run through Sunday 4 pm. Yesterday we visited the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Strasbourg, very beautiful, area has lots of coffee shops and restaurants. Walking along the river is very enjoyable too. Great area to visit.

Stay safe,

The TRMM page is fixed.. Here's 94L. Click for Quicktime. Very shallow storm.

{{{Finn}}}

Gamma~ Great to see you.

That is 12E swirling over central America. It could swirl over land for a few days like many models have..or it may just jump on into the Caribbean. It's getting a strong convection & could move along faster than models are hinting at the moment.

Great pic of 94L earlier..

Good morning everyone~ 93L is gone, 99E is 12E & Jova made landfall.

Some local showers are still flying thru, I got missed overnight but some other locals got poured on.

Wabit~ Saved all that firewood. May have to pass some along this year.

Louisclocks~ Great tune.. Have a great trip. Biketoberfest sounds fun.

GardenGrrl~ I've heard great things about indoor growing. Done a little in a bay window but could have used the lights. Glad to see your still growing your spirit. Plants are such great companions to us.

Hi, just checking in to see how you fared through all the WEATHER. Glad to see the skylight leak is fixed.

Do you have a need for fire wood with the downed oaks?
Btw, dried oak chips are great for smoking food on the grill. Subtle taste, good with potato and veggies.

As for health and drought outdoor garden here mostly gone. Will work on it again next year. Currently made a Great Wall of Plants indoors.

Used industrial shelf from home depot and dressed it up. Ordered some amazing T5 grow lights. Too much for aloe vera but other succulents and bonsai trees thriving. May do some basil if I can find room between the ornamentals.

All the green in the house and artificial sunlight has done wonders for my pets and me.

Stay safe during the next round of WEATHER.

Carolina coast may get a mesoscale vortex of their own. Or it could miss them to their east.

Aqua~ Getting about an egg a day. Mostly Lemon is laying them. (My good Lemonchicken).. Storm window shutter that doubles as a porch for a all day rain worked great.

Ponies had fun eating bits of moss & leaves scattered from the trees. All groomed. The valerian does Buster wonders. He could stand in the stall, ready to bolt out if need be. Locked him in for the worst. He was seen running wildly in the rain only once.

Had to uncover little plants from a layer of oak leaves & bring the ones that sheltered in the shed back out. A bunch more stuff came up. Haven't tried lettuce or spinach yet.

Glad to see your stuff up.

hi skye et al-
glad there was no more damage than mentioned. Had this been 8 weeks ago? It woulda been ugly.
How did Buster handle everything? and did the chicken house hold up well? We got sunshine coming- all things living are gonna be happy.

Broccoli, radishes, few raab, few carrots are up. Having a hard time with the lettuce and spinach, just can't get it to start, even after leaving the seeds in the fridge.

Need to pull the okra, maybe try to lay some more manure out.

How's the egg gathering going?

Skye ... what kind of total rain amounts has your area gotten in the past few days ???

Very unusual for here but the farmers are in the fields today ... trying to get some of the beans out before the forecasted rains for next week ...

Hope your leak is fixed ... I had a leak a few years ago in the kitchen but found the leak was almost 15 feet away over a bathroom next to it ... seems the water had run along a beam before dripping down ... the dry weather can cause seams to dry and separate so have hubby check well away from where the leak was discovered...

bet your enjoying the cooler weather ...

Morning All!

Greetings from Mlada Votice! It's raining here too! Slow drizzle since yesterday, they had the first snow in the mountains late yesterday, and it's 43F here now at almost 11am. We're traveling to Plzen later today to pick up a genuine WWII jeep, that our friend uses in reenactments here. Burr!!! gonna be a chilly damp ride home! Oh Well I'm sure it will have fun moments too.

Skye sorry about your leak. I'm crossing my fingers ours is doing ok. We have had two leaks since the 2004 season. Stay dry. Hope the plants and animals stay warm.

Oh good! it was here we were talking about Rainbows (I'll get to roof leaks later - that's what I do).
My neighbour just brought me home from a BirthDay party here for everyone having a birthday anywhere around this time - one event and maybe we won't have to cellibrate for a while. The party was pretty fine: Good food and a band - everyone lined up taxis home and we partied like we used to when we did the same thing and then drove ourselves home. My neighbour does not drink and my wife stayed in town because she works there tomorrow. I want to get on with my project here and without my truck and tools I'm basically a basket case.
But What I wish to record is the halo around the moon as I got home.
It had been raining earlier but cleared up and the waning moon showed through. Still lots of mist. What I saw, and I tried to observe carefully, was the moon in the centre of a bright circle of lit white mist with a reddish halo around it.

Roof leaking...mine too. Crapola!
I worked at the Club today and the Clubhouse and dining rooms are leaking ALL OVER! Nobody wants roof drippings in their mashed potatoes. (no golf, can you believe people actually called to see if the course was open)
All ditches filling up, some businesses are flooding out on 405, oak branches down, some streets flooded. Looks like it will get worse before better.
I did a beautiful fox out back this evening. Maybe his den is flooing? Who knows.

North Brevard, checking in..glub, glub!
