Welcome to The Ark

Sticks and Stones,
(or more properly Lumber and Concrete)

The 1st International Ark Arkitectural Design and Engineering Conference.

Pottery is working on an interesting project with some unusual challenges. The clients have a design, they have materials, and he needs to figure how to build their vision with the materials at hand. Several folks here have construction backgrounds and have expressed interest and shared ideas.

So, Pottery has forwarded to me images and some info to be posted here for input. This is his project so he has the lead. Any ideas submitted are done so in the spirit of helping a friend and no compensation is to be expected aside from camaraderie and gratitude.

I will post 10 images in the first 10 comments below and add his comments, along with links to the image files on my server. If anyone wants to post drawings or graphics and doesn't have a place to upload them, send me a WUmail, I'll send you an email address to send them to and I'll host them on my server.

Have fun.

Darn it all!
I am so sorry. If I had thought about the appointment with the physical terrorist this morning I would have sent the motor for the raft! Well, it was 0330 and I was a bit mind numb from watching tornado warnings, but still.

Thanks for the compliment, but the shot was not as impressive as it sounds. The main bow gun is actually a railgun. (only way I have to toss something that far) You just load whatever you want to launch into the special cannisters and enter the coordinates. If it's a 'chute drop, there's a key for that too. Milliseconds before the gun fires, a laser scans the atmosphere along the trajectory and makes adjustments for wind, humidity, density, etc. After firing, the laser continues to scan and sends instruction to a small computer in the canister that uses control surfaces to compensate for any changes until chute deployment. The chutes, as you no doubt noticed are actually parasails and are steered by GPS. A really big gust, or shear after deployment can throw you off a little occasionally, but it sure beats the old method of "yeah, Zeke...this looks about right" and shoving it out the back of a cargo plane. "Gee, Zeke...reckon we shoulda put a chute on that one? Zeke? Zeke?"

Fear not Captain, I did receive the two packages you sent and I must say your targeting was right on which was amazing considering the parachutes had to be opened to the SW of my house and drift in the stormy wind. They landed right on the patio and I used the raft to get to my first physical therapy visit this morning. The worm repellant came in handy also considering we have received 2.22 inches of rain already and there is more on its way according to the radar screen.

Was up all night due to thunder boomers which kept going off on a regular basis throughout the night which as you know have a tendency to cause me to jump out of bed into the ready position looking for my web gear which is no longer next to the bed anymore. SugarBear appreciates this don't you know. LOL

This all night jumping lasted until about 4 AM when I finally got to sleep and then had to run out to the patio, grab the raft and make it to the Ortho Office just in time to meet Diane the Dasterdly, the head bone crusher at the therapy office. I am now firmly convinced that physical therapists would have made excellent Spartan Warriors. They exhibit no mercy whatsoever. LOL

Was there from 10 AM until 1 PM. Did 12 different stretching exercises utilizing various stainless steel machines that would make Dr. Frankenstein jealous. Three sets of twenty repititions each, times twelve. I am not sure how many actual times I stretched the damn tendon because I can no longer use my right arm right now to use a calculator to figure it out. I am typing this with my left hand and it has taken me quite a while to get this feat accomplished. :)

The medication I took when I got home is starting to work now and I intend to rest my eyes any moment now.

I am of course kidding about most of the above narrative, but it was fun doing it. :)

She is actually a very sweet lady and she said Rule Number One on all 12 of the exercises was if you got to the point where you said Ouch, back off a little. LOL

I did say something under my breath on 2 of the exercises, and it wasn't Ouch. heh heh heh

Be back later tonight! I was serious about the nap.

Well, good afternoon and welcome to another week.

Sorry you had a bumpy night Goofy. Maybe Pottery could use a hand dealing with Jouvert. I can't go, I'd get in WAY too much trouble!

A Jumbie Bird? Well then, now I know how to handle it.

WunderGirl thanks for the heads-up. Will go over and read it soon as I get a sandwich in my belly.

Todd, how was your weekend? I'll drop by your blog in a bit to see.

No word from RTLSNK. Maybe I should have checked the batteries in the liferaft radio?

Morning! Just wanted to say that I have posted my descriptive essay on the redwood forest on my blog. :-)

*This is not the hurricane research report that I have mentioned in Dr. Masters Blog. Just a descriptive essay on the redwood forest, and pulled from memory.*

heheheh... it wasn't that sort of time out.
It was the kind when you ignore the clocks, beepers, chimes and whatnots that signal the Passage of Time.

Good Music last night, and the ones from Goofy were Especiale !

Hope that Snake is not covered in wet, cold, dismal stuff this morning.
Will need to check my Informants on this.

I see that you heard the Jumbie Bird, Capt.
It's OK you know.
Everything will be Fine.

Oh, and Good Morning.
It's Monday.
Well actually, it isn't really. It's Jouvert Morning. Which is a very different thing altogether......

RE: Rain / Snow storm of Feb 8-9. Finally got to the rain gage and we had 1.6 in + with the six in on the ground. At ten to fifteen to one that would have been a nice monster given the wind effects.

See Lower Cal is in the wind.

Rain here and temps climbing as the squall line comes in. But things are going bump in the night. Like the sound of clump as snow from the upper roof hits the porch. Or the Capt's calcs were a tad off and his packages ended up here. Took a turn around the works but didn't see much in the dark except the crunch of snow underfoot and one set of tracks.

Hood wakes up and checks the weather. Grumbles something and walks briskly to the bow gun deck. Loads life rafts and worm repellent into the big forward gun and enters some coordinates into the firing console.

The big cannon cycles once and The Ark shudders a bit. He watches the console until he is satisfied that two parachutes have deployed and the packages are on course, mutters something else, turns on his heel and marches back to his cabin.

HA large plain and a pepperoni mushroom with anchovies on the side. Plus a large antipasto. Take the banana peppers and roasted red peppers the green and black olives plus some onion and you have a nice garbage pie. Well a quote from CCHAMP @ blizz's blog. Think he has been on a high wing plow since Fri.

"Quickly checking in before bed. Home for much needed sleep. Litchfield Ct area received around 30 inches. Too hard to measure and I dont really care the offical amount. Its a crap load either way. Lol. I have been plowing for 18 years and was 7 during the 78 blizzard. At one point during the night it snowed around 6" and hour for several hours. The wind was non stop with maybe about 3' of visibility. I also lived in Anchorage and have never seen it snow that hard for so long. Our 125 miles of roads are all cleared. Luckily we have plows and equipment for this type of storm. Many towns in the area do not will take days to open the roads. Gonna be along week of clean up. Hopefully no more snow storms this week."

Lots of folks w/o power and access. Snow melts and freezes. Maybe break tomorrow.

Think You fellas see some weather tonight..

Did you ever notice how strange things begin to happen
shortly after Pottery shows up here? Now, I'm not saying
that there is any scientific evidence for the strange
repetitive correlation between his appearence here and
strange things happening at our locations but it is
very strange is it not? :)

Hello, yes, I am still here, I didn't have time to
take that nap, SugarBear chose to prune the rose garden
today right before the storm gets here tonight. There
are 5 big rose bushes in that circular garden all of
them about 6 feet tall and at least 3 feet around.

She pruned them down to the one foot above the ground
level which meant there were big clumps of thorny
piles that looked like tumble weeds that would have
blown into our neighbors yard unless someone gathered
them up and tossed them in the woods where the wind
couldn't get them. That "someone"? Yeah, Moi. :)

Managed to do it this time without getting any of the
half inch thorns in my hands. How did I do that this
year you ask? BBQ gauntlet gloves. LOL

Those thorns go right through leather work gloves!

About time you showed up!

We are doing that scary ESP thing again.
I was typing my time comment while you
were saying "its about time". :)
Member Since: September 3, 2008 Posts: 0 Comments: 20950
Yes, it is I, whatever my nickname is today, I forget
sometimes, today is one of those times, or is it one
of these times, or is time the problem? These are
questions one should think about if one has the time.

Hmmm, there is that time thing again. Time. Time is
a multitudinal concept is it not? One second is a
measure of time, and yet a lifetime is also a measure
of time. And who is to say that what one does today is
a lost measure of time tomorrow because tomorrow is the
future today, but tomorrow today is yesterday and a
part of history already.

Hmmm, I will think about the concept of time if I get
some free time but its nap time now and I must not be
late for it this time. :)

So sayeth the sooth sayer. And it was so.

Everywhere there is Beauty, Outrageousness, Absurdity, Smiling faces, and Appreciation for Life

That is good and as it should be.

Thanks for the report.
I know a bit about sound engineering, while far from being an expert. Some friends who have bands that perform live often ask my opinion and suggestions for improvement. Consequently, when I visit, I often spend much of the night walking around the venue listening instead of just enjoying the party.

Recording in the situation you described would be a real challenge. Special mics, critical placement, and then all the other problems that come with recording an outdoor venue.

Don't know that I'm up to it.

Good Morning Pottery!
Good that you could drag yourself out from under the table this morning!
:o)

Thanks, Capt.
I think I'll survive.
"Twas a good night.

Trinidad Carnival is possibly the best "Relief Valve" that we have going.
The Country has all kinds of Problems (Very high murder rate, corrupt & incompetent leadership, drugs and gang issues, etc), and it's at Carnival that people come together to demonstrate that all those things -while of National Importance and Concern- will never upset the general Harmony and feeling of Togetherness that exists.
It's a contradiction.

Last night there were about 20,000 people on the Drag (not counting those in the GrandStand and NorthStand where the Younger crowd goes to Party) spread out over about 2-3 acres listening to the Music, moving to the beat and sometimes the crowd was massive and pressed together tight.
Everywhere there is Beauty, Outrageousness, Absurdity, Smiling faces, and Appreciation for Life.

"The Drag" (where we hang out) is the roadway leading into the Savanna where the Bands are Judged.
The Drag is Tribal, and the supporters of the bands congregate there to Vibes-Up the musicians before they face the judges.
The bands were born in the Ghettos of the city in the 40's, and have progressed to full orchestral ability through hard work, discipline, dedication and innovation. Traits that are sorely lacking in many other aspects of this crazy Nation.

Unfortunately, the recording of the music is a big problem.
It's improved over the recent years by placing overhead mikes and mikes spread throughout the band.
How do you record 700 percussion instruments at once ?
The only way to get the full range of what is being played is to be up close to the band and in a place where you can hear a balanced mix of the instruments.

One band (Exodus) has tried something new this year....
They have done away with the overhead canopies, and mounted the entire band on elevated plywood bases in an effort to give a more clean and resonant sound. Sounded good to me, especially the bass drums, as expected.

It's all quite remarkable,

Just a note about posting long stuff like essays
(from the 'things I learned the hard way files')

Get it into plain text format...like notepad or another text editor. Go ahead and check your spelling, etc. before copying and pasting into the comment box. I've noticed WU won't let you edit post beyond a certain length...it chops them off if you try. Not using plain txt format can lead to odd results.

Well, this particular one was originally posted because of a construction project that Pottery is working on, the initial rough sketches of which are posted in the first 10 comments on the first page.

However, Since Carnival has started in Trinidad, I don't expect much more forthcoming from Pottery for a few days.

Basically, the way this blog works is just a bunch of friendly folks hanging out and chatting, sometimes on a topic, sometimes just random. You've probably also noticed that we also post a lot of music. Sometimes we write fictional adventure stories together.

Originally it was started as a place for a lot of folks to hang out and chat as an alternative to the bickering, trolling, and drama that frequently occurs on Dr. Master's Blog. I closely monitored it, making sure it was a safe place to play and as we got a good group together and folks came to know what was expected behavior wise, it became less of a chore.

The rules are simple. Keep it clean. Keep it friendly. Have fun. Be nice.

In order to avoid discord and trolling, we also avoid discussion of highly controversial topics like politics, religion, global warming, etc.

And welcome.
